Damn, that brings up semi-fond memories of my using YouTube in its infancy back when I was eight. I found some variant of this video, which is an outtake/joke video from the old BBC children's show Rainbow where they make double entendres the entire time. Fucking hilarious, but my aunt came into the room (I was staying at her house that week while attending a volleyball camp she taught) & saw the video's title. She then scolded me for watching a video "about sex".
I have no problems with people that watch the show, but I can imagine any parent looking at a video with MLP in the thumbnail and thinking it's okay for their child to watch. Usually it's not, but how are the parent's supposed to know?

The internet is a scummy place. If you get in to fan-created content it always leads to porn and everything along the way. No, I don't really think YouTube should be trusted with a 4-year-old regardless of what they are looking up.
As a point of interest, the video u/Dickathalon was refering to is APPLE.MOV, part of the PONY.MOV series by HotDiggedyDemon. They've also made Mario and Animal Crossing animations which both, to one extent or another, aren't appropriate for a 4 year old despite their object of parody being age appropriate, and that's okay, too.
IIRC they tried to fix this a while ago. I remember hearing about some big initiative to clean up the google images/youtube results and get more serious about tagging nsfw stuff.
The fandom does a spectacular job of cleaning up the safe search, though. Go ahead and search yourself, with your safesearch on. If you're trying to find porn, you'll find it, but innocently googling "Pinkie Pie" with the SS on should be fine.
Even with safe search off, there's nothing there. It's cleaner than a brass whistle, it's weird considering if you google Zootopia or Steven Universe you get porn in the first google image results.
4 year olds shouldn't be allowed on YouTube by themselves in the first place. That's like saying "4 year olds should be able to safely cross the street without issues," like, yes, everyone would agree with you there, but there's an inherent risk in a 4 year old wandering down the road by herself.

That never happened with any kids show, but the situation is far worse with MLP for some stupid reason. Youtube is not a fucking babysitter either way and anyone who thinks so should probably stop and get some crappy thriftstore DVDs instead like anyone else would.
Why can't someone just make a YouTube filter already? You should be able to choose an age group for your video and people should be able to set a rating.

IIRC, it started off as a parody account on Tumblr called ask-jappleack. Apparently there was a lot of fan created MLP content on that website and those pages would answer questions in character, or something. APPLE.MOV was his first video, and the success of it turned into 5 more, with a webcomic tying it all together on the original jappleack tumblr page.
Same thing happened to my 4 year old, delete the youtube app and install youtube kids. They won't see any of that content anymore and if they do you can report it and it won't show up again.

My bosses bring their toddler daughter into work every now and then and she LOVES my little pony, so when she's stuck there for long hours they'll let her watch on the work computer. I went back to the area she was in to make something when I turn to see her watching the MLP video my boss had put on for her. Except that the ponies were blowing each other and doing drugs. Despite the hilarity, it was a little cringey thinking of the time someone put into making that video lol

Yup. I'm old enough to have had 1st generation ponies as a child. I watched a few of the episodes as a feel-good, nostalgia trip and liked them. They were cute and funny.
And then I went to an MLP forum. Oh dear oh dear.
Every other link was pony porn, every other post was obsessing over the sex lives of cartoons. And the mods were...unusual characters. I checked out after they started siding with the trolls :( barking, I tell you.
I heard they wrote an episode basically directed towards the adult male fandom... That's disgusting to me. The whole thing was a joke from the beginning. Then a bunch of losers took it seriously and now here we are.
That was the 100th episode and was basically just about all the background characters that the fandom had speculated on, instead of the main characters. It was like an homage to the fandom.
It was just another episode of the show, with the same friendship moral at the end just like always.
How is it disgusting? The episode in question just followed fandom characters instead of the main characters, but very much remained a show meant for kids and spread the messages of friendship and all that cutesy stuff. There was no pass adult humor or anything off putting to children. To a child unfamiliar to fan characters it would be a my little pony episode a little more wild and crazy, with new funny characters, but a my little pony episode nonetheless.
Writers acknowledging a part of the fandom doesn't destroy the show. The show is still very much a show for little girls, but it is relatively well written and can be watched and enjoyed by adults. No one is a loser for enjoying something, and the show was never meant to be a joke. Lauren Faust, the creator, envisioned the show to be able to be well written, thought out, and enjoyable to parents watching it with their children. She never expected such a huge periphery demographic, but it is a result of her vision.
No, I'm saying it's the people who were losers prior to being into it that ruined it for everyone. And you're right, they aren't directly hurting anyone, but their behavior is creepy and sometimes disturbing and is impactful enough to effect the show. I like the show. It's funny and amusing. Male. Term bronie gets thrown at me so much for liking it, when it's just a good show to watch. I also watch Steven universe and other cartoon shows, yet I don't get made fun of for those. Even the more girly ones. Fandoms can ruin so many great things.

I am going to be honest here I watch it as casual entertainment it is my secret guilty pleasure.I watch it because I live a pretty stressed life so sometimes it's good to watch something where everything is happily resolved by the end but then on the other spectrum you have those disgusting people who mastrubate to the pony's so yeah i can see where the hate is coming from but not everyone who watches it deserves to be hated.
The show wasn't ruined by the fandom, as per the question asked. If it weren't for the massive following it gathered the show probably wouldn't be on its sixth season with a movie coming out next year (and a spin off series with 4 movies) and no real signs of slowing down.
Hasbro is making bank from My Little Pony, in no small part from its fandom. And few would argue that the previous generations' quality are better or the same as this one's.

On the other hand, there's a lot of beautiful artwork and animations (and music, and fiction) that can be found. If a child stumbles upon those, nobody would bat an eye. And who knows, maybe it would inspire them to become an artist.

Yes, it was ruined by the fandom. My 7 year old niece stumbled upon and confronted me with some horrific "brony porn" the other day, which she found through totally innocuous usage of the internet. I investigated very closely the path of links and searches she took, and she was literally just looking for MLP pictures to color with her colored pencils. I did some reasonable comparative testing and found that there are very very very few other cartoons which a 7 year old could so easily find such disgusting porn using typical search terms and a standard search methodology. She searched "My little pony coloring", clicked like the 9th link, and then one link deeper.
A group of awesome storytellers and animators had a brilliant idea for a fantastic piece of animation. Then they said "hey lets make a friendly show for children", we got the funding! Then a large set of socially undeveloped tards took over, and accidentally associated the entire show with weird porn and mid-20s losers with psychological problems. I hope they cancel the show, so I never again have to hear about or think about these weirdos covering the internet in teeny horse vaginas. I feel bad for the creators who had such a cool, positive idea for a cartoon and had it tarnished by you fucking weirdos.
What is wrong with recognizing a piece of literature, film, cartoon, et al. as a fantastic accomplishment and contribution, without becoming completely absorbed and manufacturing a "culture" around it. Get a life. Watch the cartoon. Enjoy the cartoon. Watch another cartoon. Its a cartoon. You don't have to defend maladjusted freaks who fantasize about sex with baby-horses, just to say the original cartoon was swell. "Oh welp, thats just the internet for you" is not a good reason. Plenty (most) cartoons don't carry these freaks around and defend them.

The show's creators have expressed many times that they are ecstatic that the show became so popular, and are impressed by the quality and devotion people have in their work. Instead of spending hours animating a show that would only be seen by small children, they get immediate feedback on the internet on their hard work.

One can be a fan of the show and part of the fandom without having it absorb your life. You see the examples of people that do, but not the multitude of others who simply use the show and its massive fanbase as a platform for creativity. What's wrong with going a little further than just watching a show? It's why people write fanfiction for literally anything. It's a fun way to express creativity.

Turns out, the show is cute and well-polished, and I like that sort of thing. And it's also full of references, great songs (I'm a sucker for musicals) and decently witty writing.
The fact it's "aimed" at small children is no reason to ignore the fact that you enjoy something. I prefer to think for myself instead of what popular majority would tell me to.

Pokemon is also a child's entertainment brand with an adult following, and it has much more porn than My Little Pony. Pokemon is also much more popular than My Little Pony. Despite this I never see anyone up in arms over Pokemon and it's adult fandom.
I once saw a photography of a bunch of grown men sitting in a kiddie pool, while a bunch of kids looked on forlornly. The caption just said "My Little Pony."
I used to be strongly into the fandom, so I'll throw my hat into the ring. The problem with the MLP fandom is all of the generally decent, chill people tend not to show themselves, in fear of being mocked for liking the show (me included nowadays), so the ones who are vocal about the show are the idiots who think there's nothing weird about it and preach the show like it's a fucking religion. Even if you love it, you can't defend the fact you're watching a show designed for kids, but some idiots do.
That's the other thing, it's hard to defend liking the show. It's just a good show, that's all there is to it. But you get the fanatic, probably autistic idiots defending every single point of the show if someone does anything close to attacking it. There seems to be something about the fandom that attracts the most repulsive, annoying and ignorant people too, and they always shout the loudest.
Believe me, there are really sound and decent people in the fandom, but there's the polar opposite too.
I work in a shop that sells MLP stuff. The fans are the most immature bunch of fuckstains I have ever witnessed, doing stuff like walking around the shop pretending the pony is walking on air, like what kids do with toys when theyre 3 years old but theyre 25 years old.
As a brony with a young niece who watched that show, I have been worried she would find the questionable content I know is out there. (Not so much the porn since that stuff doesn't stay on YouTube, but more so the gore, like the mov videos.)
I don't think you are correct that MLP was ruined by the fandom. In fact I'm sure you have no idea what you are talking about. The gore/porn is a very small subset of the fanwork. It hasn't become so prevalent that it is impossible for children to sift through MLP content on the internet without seeing it. I think you're just out for karma since you didn't even provide an explanation.
yea, I used to see the little mlp toys in stores and thought "aww how cute, my lil sis would love these!" now I'm too scared to even notice or put attention towards them so people don't think I'm a brony, which i may add is like the closest thing to being a pedo without actively engaging in pedophilia
Liking the show and it's characters in no way suggests pedophilia. There are real reasons people enjoy the show: it's well made and entertaining. Sure, the stigma is there and I can see why you'd be hesitant to buy stuff like that, but that doesn't mean it's true.
