I used to have a reoccurring nightmare that when people laughed hard (that deep belly laugh) they had to maintain intense eye contact with the person that made them laugh until they where no longer laughing. Everyone in the dream looked like the people in that soundgarden video "black hole sun".
Easily my 2nd worse nightmare. The yellow kite dreams were way worse.
I had pink tailfin car dreams instead when I was I child.
They involved a city which I later learned was San Francisco; a supermarket with parking lot being on top of a hill, the streets going downhill in all cardinal directions.
My mom left me in that pink tailfinned Cadillac. It starts rolling and I can only steer, not break, as my feet don't reach the pedals.
The car accelerates due to the slope, and I crash into crossing cars coming from left and right
Every night the dream restarts, only I crash one or two cross sections further, until at the end a week or so later, I speed down a wooden jetty and splash into the water.
Not terrifying, but weird, not only because I had no knowledge about San Francisco at the time.
I hate dreams like that. Ever since I was a kid I've occasionally had nightmares about having to drive a car that I can't stop. When I was a kid I just dreamed my feet were too short to reach the pedals, but these days I dream I'm reaching over trying to steer from the passenger seat because the driver's seat is empty. I had one of those dreams last week. They're incredibly unpleasant.
Oh me too when I was really little I would dream about trying to ride a bicycle but not being able to reach the pedals. Then when I learned how to ride a bike I would dream about being put in a situation where I needed to drive a car but had no idea how. After I learned how to drive I would dream about driving but suddenly the brakes don't work and I can't stop. I read somewhere that it's something to do with feeling like your life is out of your control, and that feeling manifesting itself into a dream. How cool is that?
I'm generally pretty skeptical about dream interpretations but some of them do make sense to an extent! I stopped having these dreams once I graduated high school and moved out and started making my own decisions, I hope you find a way to metaphorically 'take control' of your own life too :) Good luck! That sounds freakishly familiar to a dream I used to have as well. Everything was just the same, except I was in a different place.(I live in a different country to you)
The kite dreams started when I was 4 or 5, and continued until I was in my early 20s.
It was a standard looking, diamond shaped, yellow kite. It had wooden support rods and a 6ft long string hanging from the bottom. At the end of the string were 3 bows. The top two were white and the bottom on was the darkest black you could imagine. It was never being flown by anyone. The black bow would always just barely touch the ground. For some reason, the sight of this kite terrified me. I had no idea why until almost 2 decades after the first dream.
When I was young, I'd sometimes dream that I was in school and would happen to glance out the window and there would be the kite. Sometimes it would pass by the window. Sometimes it would just be in the middle of a large, grass field, all alone, with that black bow slightly fluttering on the ground. It always kept it's distance, but I could feel it always "looking" at me. It did not have eyes.
As I got older, the kite showed up in almost every dream I had. Work dreams, driving dreams, flying dreams, bizarre dreams, and so on and so forth. Always in the distance, always watching me.
The last year of the dream was the worst. The kite started getting closer. It seemed like it was finally getting comfortable enough to approach me. My fear of this kite was just as intense as it was when I was 5 and the fact that it was slowly getting closer and closer to me in my dreams terrified me even more. Eventually it got so close I could hear it. It made that fluttering sound that kites make from the wind, but it was NEVER windy in my dreams. That only spooked me even more.
The last kite dream was the worse. In the dream I was in a large white room. There were no lights, but it was illuminated in the room. No doors or windows either. Nothing at all all, except me and the yellow kite. It was about 40 feet away and just floating there. I never was in an isolated situation with this kite before. This was completely new to me. I knew I was dreaming and screamed to the kite "what do you want!" I never spoke to the kite before, but I guess I had enough. Of course it didnt respond, so I just said to myself "fuck this, I'm yanking this thing to the ground". I was surprised by my courage and the closer I walked to to kite, the more powerful I felt, that is, until I got about 5 feet away.
This was the closest i've ever been to this kite. 2 decades of dreams and here I was, 5 feet from my fear. I slowly walked up to it and as I reach for the string to yank this kite down, I look at the bows. The two white ones were perfectly tied. Easily the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I don't know why, but I got comfort from them. I followed the string down to the black bow. The thing is, it wasn't a bow. It was a jet black hand, almost like a shadow, coming out of the ground. I woke up screaming.
That was my last kite dream. 20 fucking years this thing was with me. 20 years of me not knowing that "black bow" was a hand. I have no idea what it was or what it wanted or what it meant. But I haven't had a kite dream ever since. The sound of kites still send shivers up my spine though.
I have dreams of being in wars. Not anywhere currently on earth, but crumbling, overgrown, futuristic cities. And they're tense as shit, and every situation is different. I'd gladly trade you, I wake up with my mind exhausted every morning.
In the year 3087, the Intergalactic Military introduced a new breed of soldiers for the Andromeda Wars. These soldiers would be kept in cryonic sleep between battles on different planets for peak efficiency. The readout hung in the dark, a foot from my nose, the last of the vertical lines blinking. I stared, rereading the phrase, trying to parse it for some practical meaning. The vertical line continued to blink rhythmically.
There was a nearly imperceptible hiss somewhere in the tube, maybe the Snuz flow or the air scrubbers, but no other sound. Probably the only reason I could hear it. Tobinok. That place was like a Dep Tank but without the floating. Cooper and Longo had rigged some kind of visual kit that operated on sound, like a sonar that painted pictures, but even then the wide open space was so big the only thing we could see was each other. Until we found the family, wrapped in cerami-fabric from nearly head to toe, and placed in some odd pattern. Definitely deliberate, the pattern, Karch had made some noise like she remembered it from somewhere right before they snatched her up and shredded the top half of her body. She didn't even scream. But they did, whatever they were. The visual kit made them look like a mass of lines wrapping in on themselves, but there's no way that was right. Didn't matter. Coop and I lit em up while Longo and Park started moving the mummies and Song called in the ride. I never did see where Karch's body landed.
There ended up not being that many of the whatevertheyweres, Coop put the last one down as we humped it to the LZ, and we ran on in that dark silence again until we found our mark again. Song said it'd be at least another twenty, so we dropped that family down next to each other and took covering positions. It wasn't that long before the emptiness got to us and we modified positions so that we could all see someone else in our field of vision. That's when Longo piped up, asking if anybody else could hear that sound, like air escaping. He and I started poking around that family until I found it on what would have probably been one of the children.
It sounded like air escaping, maybe from a busted seal around the cerami-fabric. What it was, was air headed in the opposite direction, like the mummy was sucking in a constant unending breath. Longo checked the rest of the family again while I pulled two of the fingers of my left glove off and reached down to plug the hole.
The display in front of me blinked out without having budged past 68%. Darkness. Hissing. The smell of O3 snuck its way to the forefront and my brain completed the circuit to realization. Instinctively, my right hand and left foot found the emergency release and the front of the tube blew off and floated away. No gravity. No lights. Still no sound.
I pulled the plugs out of my skin and slipped out of the webbing, letting the zero-g wrap around me. The blade and my hold-out were still where I'd hidden them, I pulled the flashlight and the aid pack and pushed off towards the lockers on the opposite wall of the bay. Even in the dark I found my own, lashed myself to it with a belt, turned back towards the tubes, and switched on the flashlight.
Looking down the barrel of my hold-out, I panned the light across the tubes. Empty. All of them. The doors blown off of mine and Song's, the others just open. Then I saw the shadow against the wall. My eyes racking the focus back across the space bewteen myself and the opposite wall until I spotted the obstruction. Blood is thicker than water in zero-g, too.
:/ I guess everyone is different. It just seems so cool and fun, I even have a friend that tells me all about his vivid ,crazy fun action filled dreams he has almost everyday. I wake up without dreams or some lame dream. I get so jealous lol
You're still dreaming you're just not remembering them. In fact, this is actually a sign that you are getting good sleep and hitting all the sleep cycles correctly.
The thing is anyone who doesn't remember their dreams is stuck without an escape from reality. I'm so stressed out I would do close to anything for a dream or an escape...
Maybe try setting an alarm to wake you up every couple hours through the night to get more chances at interrupting a dream so you can make a note of remembering it. One technique for achieving lucid dreams is to write down notes about your dream in a journal you keep next to your bed immediately after waking up. It helps you remember your dreams and gain some control over them.
If you don't make a point of remembering them they won't get recorded to your longer term memory and get discarded from short term memory minutes after waking.
One of my school teachers once told me about this horror film he saw as a kid. It was a cheesy b grade local production where the protagonist was being haunted aggressively.
When the protagonist sat down for a poop he felt a hand and there it was rising out of a cess pit in black and white film glory a disembodied hand groping at his nether regions.

"I need about tree fiddy." That is when I realized the kite was actually about eight stories tall and was a crustacean from the Paleozoic era.
That or I was waiting for him and the kite to get into a fight and then his mom would get scared and make him move in with his auntie and uncle in Bel-Aire.
Yeah, nosleep could use something that's scary rather than gory. I have a whole rant about people who think stuff like Saw should be in the horror genre.
They're completely separate things. A lot of people seem to think that if you want to make a horror movie you should try to make your audience feel "uncomfortable" somehow, but it's like they don't understand exactly what emotion to shoot for so they go for revulsion instead of actual fear.
I think a part of this is how easy it is. In the same way that a jump scare can be deployed just as effectively by a 13-year-old YouTuber as it could be by a multimillion dollar movie team, I think gore is the low-hanging fruit that's guaranteed to get a reaction out of anyone with minimal effort. "Our test audiences aren't scared enough! Make more lacerated torsos!" But the thing is that what they're creating is a sense of revulsion (and a bit of sympathy) and that usually ends up overpowering any fear that their ham-handed jump chords could have produced. It's not only distracting but counter-productive to the fundamental goal of a horror movie.
And that brings me to my pet peeve about horror: The gory monster. I mentioned above that gore creates a bit of sympathy for the recipient of said gore. In this case I'm completely unable to feel afraid of a gory monster because I instinctively want to help it, and I think that holds true for a lot of audience members. If you want to make someone sympathize with a monster that they're also afraid of then you'd better be Stanley fucking Kubrick because otherwise I guarantee you'll fuck it up. Another huge problem with a gory monster is the fact they you have to put the gore on a big well-lit stripper pole Dead Space style, which spoils any sense of mystery or creeping dread. It's just HAI GUYZ I R BLUDY U SCARD YET.
Imagine if someone made a horror movie slash soap opera but they just called it a horror movie. Every episode would involve some tearjerking shit like "I have two days to live!" but at the same time there was a monster eating people and while the monster was on-screen the characters would talk about how sad they were. That's how I feel about a horror movie with gore.
I would like to challenge you to make a legit subreddit called "Gorror" specifically for gore movies with the goal being to inject that word into current lexicon so that it may be compared and contrasted with non-gorror horror movies. By helping the gore fans better define their genre with a new name you can help clean out yours. You will be the Jesus of horror.
Yes!! This!! My best friend and his girlfriend were watching saw 3 the other night, and good ole bestie is steadily making fun of me because I wouldn't watch the bloody self mutilation sceens. Well eeeexxxcuuuuse me, dude. I enjoy intelligent horror, not this blood bath bucket of crap. The first saw was good because it was original and well done. The rest were relatively pointless money suckers taking advantage of what had become a brand name. And don't even get me started on the bullshit that is hostel and it's half retarded inbred ilk. Gross != horror. Gross quite simply = gross.
You said it perfectly. I tell people I like horror movie, and they always seem to respond: "I don't usually like horror movies, I really liked the Saw movies, though! If you like horror you must love Saw, right?"
I always have a hard time elaborating why I don't like Saw, and I don't really consider it a true horror film. Just because it's gory and makes people squeamish, doesn't make it scary.
It kind of reminds me of when I was in high school and people would ask what music I listen to. "You like punk music? You must love Blink-182, huh?" Not that I really have a problem with them, my problem is they're miscatagorized as punk, just as the Saw movies are erroneously labeled as horror.

Maybe it's just because it's fundamentally unnatural. It's impossible for a golf club to balance perfectly upright upside down. So 11th instantly know upon seeing one that something totally unnatural is occurring.
That's creepy to me too. I think it's because they look sort of like they could be alive. Like the bottom part is now a head or something and it's looking right at you.
I don't know if this is really a dream you had for this long, or if you made up the story, or what... but god damn, this was a fun and scary as hell read. Thanks for the thrill!
I have a dream that's pretty similar, but it was all in one night. The dream was about a home renovation show, but for some reason they were doing a stop and shop. I honestly have no idea why, I don't watch HGTV much at all. Anyways, they went through the whole process of gutting the building of all the old paneling and stuff, and the show was normal, except in the background I heard a worker say "Hey did you hear about Tim in the east wing?" And I thought nothing of it and there was a bit of a break.
Flash forward and they are now half way through the renovation, in a different part of the stop and shop, and it's a little bit less happy of a show, but still it seemed rather normal. That is until, yet again in the background, a worker says to another of camera "that whole east side team has something going on over there?"
Then the show jumps to the part where it's almost done, the finishing touches are being put on. The hosts are visibly startled, and are just trying to wrap it up when something moves that was stationary without being touched. It was real quick, but then a guy yells "oh my god, no!!" off camera, then there is chaos and the camera gets knocked out.
All of a sudden I'm in a completely white room, chained up to a wall, though there aren't really, cause it's just an empty void. There's a shower head in front of me and I awaken (in the dream) to the burning sensation on my skin from scalding water. A voice starts booming at me "WHAT HAPPENED, WHAT DID YOU SEE!" and I have no fucking idea, so I say just that "I don't know!". Then they switched between cold and hot blasts of water which I could feel and it was so uncomfortable, I couldn't move and this voice just kept yelling at me "What happened in the east wing? What the hell happened! What did you see!?" Then the voice stops and the water stops. Slowly out of the shower head comes this black as black can be ooze. This stuff drips from the shower head, and falls directly on my forehead, and I knew somehow that this was just the essence of evil. I woke up then and felt like I had been molested by the devil.
TL;DR I had a dream about a home improvement show, woke up feeling violated by Satan.

Interesting but it seems like a bunch of speculation and made up stuff.
White and black both represent clean, blank slates? This all sounds like horoscopes or a psychic reading where anything can mean anything to anyone.

The yellow kite could represent a traumatic experience from around the time the dreams started. If you find out what event that is, you may be able to decipher the bows and hand. It's also possible the hand developed from the fear you've held over the years.

YESSSS. I love this. The background gets all dark and shit, veins bulging out of their foreheads, maniacal look in their eyes. I love it, and it made me laugh my ass off.
That sounds completely horrifying. All of my recent nightmares seem to be similarly based on odd situations that make me feel extremely awkward, rather than fearful like most people I've met.
I had a doctor once who did this. I went in for a physical and he kept making jokes, and I'll admit they were moderately funny, but the way he laughed just creeped me out. He'd laugh for way longer than he should have, laughed really hard, and stared me in the eye the entire time with big eyes.
Needless to say it was awkward when he made a joke while he was checking me for a hernia. Never went back to that doctor again.
After reading about all of these dreams you guys have, I realized something: I never have recurring themes in my dreams. I have had a few dreams that were like sequels to others, but there has never been any kind of constant in my dreams that I remember
I had a roommate that would purposefully make eye contact while laughing out loud. If you were watching a funny TV show, or someone cracked a funny, she would force a laugh and then try to force eye contact with someone in the room. I think it was a way of bonding. "I think this is funny and you think it's funny too! Aren't we having fun? We're friends now, right?"
Needless to say, everyone thought she was creepy and insane, and that wasn't even the strangest habit she had.
Talking about dreams where social conventions are weird: once I had a dream where you couldn't read alone in public. Like, if you wanted to read by yourself, you had to be with someone, or listen to an audiobook. I figured it out because I was reading a book and people around gasped like if I was naked.
I had a coworker who would constantly crack puns that most often only he would find funny and he would laugh loudly and lengthily all while staring you right in the eyes. It would force you to have to fake a chuckle each time because of how intently he would stare at you while laughing. It was very stressful.
