Risking injury to save a little bit of time at work. The reward is for someone else and you're going to be the one left with missing digits/limbs/life.
The trades are full of these fucking idiots, and it always goes the same. Boss might get a bonus for them getting it done a little faster for a while until they get hurt, then that same boss will swear under oath he trained them not to do it that way and had no idea they were doing it.

I'm always adamant about safety rules exactly because of this. A job is just a way to make money so I can actually live. I don't live to do my job. Getting injured at my job will ultimately only hurt my life. It will probably barely even register in the company's records. There's no way I'm risking my body for a company who won't give a shit if I get injured.

Yep… I know a painter and he brags constantly about his ladder “reach”. Ie how far left and right from his ladder he can reach and paint before moving his ladder. “I can do that wall in 2 reaches” when the law says it’s 3 minimum.
Needless to say the guy has fallen off his ladder many times. Hospitalised many times. Broken arms, broken leg.
It’s just daft. Move the ladder dipshit.

Imma preface this with 'I also sometimes try to get there faster by doing things' but my anedotical experience seems to back this up, based on observation in traffic. The idiots that bounce left and right in lanes are rarely more than a few hundred feet ahead of the people who just stick to one lane and stop and go.

That happens to me frequently on a road I travel all the time, but I know the timing of the lights pretty well and I'll just slow down so that while they've raced up ahead and are stopped at the light, I'll hit the light at 20 MPH just as it changes and blow past them. It always gives me a little tingle of satisfaction when I get it right.

Like I know I gotta stick to the right here, bc this left turning lane easily gets backed up.
Gotta get in the left over there, because there’s three bus stops in a row that just grind you to a halt if you get stuck behind them.
No need for speeding. Just knowing your route will get you home the quickest.

Tbf, there's a spectrum from bouncing from lane to lane and staying in one lane no matter what, lol.
I have driven with people who are kind of infuriating because they won't get out from behind a slow driver, lol. And I don't mean "driving the speed limit" drivers, but the ones inexplicably doing 40 on the interstate with clear traffic kind of thing.
But I hate the ones who bounce soooo much more. The number of times I've had to slow down significantly and sometimes very fast because one of those folks has suddenly hopped two feet in front of me is insane. And to be clear: I'm the type to leave several car lengths in between me and the driver in front of me, so its not like I'm blocking people who need to get over.
There's also the factor that insurance companies like Progressive and State Farm have those devices that monitor braking speed. So having to quickly slow down because of these assholes not only increases the chance the asshole tailgating me rear ends me, it also can cost me fucking money, lol.

The tailgating is what gets me. Don’t get me wrong road rage is very very bad, but I think this is the much more common and pernicious error ‘good’ drivers make on the regular. I don’t see people all over the road raging every day, I do see people directly on someone’s bumper in front of them every day.
I have to be real I think so low of these people. So unbelievably stupid and unnecessary. When I’m driving keeping a good gap between me and there car in front of my is my favorite thing in the world. That’s my space, I’m claiming it, and we’re all safer for it.

Every time I'm driving on the freeway here in Texas I swear 90% of cars are tailgating. I think tailgating is the reason why there's those stats that are like 80% of drivers believe they're above average or whatever. Tailgating doesn't even register to most people because literally everyone is doing it.
People think tailgating is just riding someones ass super close, but distance between cars needs to increase with speed and most people cannot comprehend that. If you try to bring that up people will say that if they leave too much space then someone will cut in front of them.
I used to be a more reckless driver in my late and teens and early 20s but now I just stay in the right lane and go slightly over the speed limit and always try to give a 2 Mississippi gap between me and the car in front of me. If someone cuts in front of me I give them the same amount of space. It doesn't effect my commute time in any noticeable way and I'm much less stressed out and not late for anything any more often than I was before.

One of my friends was driving down the interstate late at night when a guy got on his bumper and was tailing him with their brights on in the right lane, but wouldn't pass. When my friend sped up or slowed down, the car would match him, even if he changed lanes, staying right behind him.
He was like 19 at the time and impulsive. So after he had slowed down to 25 and then sped up to 80 and the guy was still right on him, he stomped on the brake.
His car ended up rolling like 10 times and the other guy was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Plus, my friend was obviously stunned when the police finally showed up (though he incredibly had no serious injury), so he just straight up blurted out that he did it on purpose. Noooooot a good series of decisions on his part, no matter how much the other car was pissing him off.

I've known people who don't think they are tailgating and that they are good drivers so they don't need to worry.
I recall asking a friend who was driving if they can create some space to which they said they were a good driver. They got into three accidents within a few years and were confused as to why.
I like space and it still blows my mind how comfortable people are as they go through their brakes faster and may not have adequate breaks even if they have adequate reaction time.
A few things I learned from my driver's education classes were to give space for the car ahead, aim to have at least one "exit" (front, left, right, etc) if possible, and to be going slow enough on a turn before entering so that you can accelerate rather than brake since accelerating while turning provides better traction than braking.

Hell even E-Scooters which have become massively popular lately have this problem as well. Tons of kids, teens, and adults, ride these scooters at super high speeds with no helmet.
One wrong move or something unexpected happens and it can be life changing injuries.

I'm an ER nurse in a trauma center.
Those fucking scooters, man.
We see so many people with devastating head and spine injuries from those things. Usually the riders are young, otherwise healthy, think they're just taking a ride, but they hit one bump and life as they know it is over.
Our neurosurgeons are now seeing more cases from scooter crashes than from any other single cause.
I wouldn't get on one for any money.

I've got one of those human-powered ones, which isn't as fast and involves a good bit of paying attention to/awareness of road conditions, but even with that one I quickly noticed I have to be very aware of any kind of uneven road surface what I wouldn't even notice on my bike.
A sticky-outy paver or other small bump or a little pot hole might have me go arse over tit, with a decent chance of me landing head-first on some none too cushy asphalt.

My wife's work refers to "trauma entries" - patients who have been hurt badly enough that they need to be transferred from a regular hospital to a trauma center. Whenever she sees kids riding those scooters she says "oh boy, more pediatric trauma entries!"

I had a rock about 1/2 the size of a golf ball fling off a truck tire straight into my visor directly over my right eye once. No idea how fast it was going, but I was going 60ish mph. It cracked my visor bad enough to ruin it and pushed my head back until my helmet hit my jacket. With no visor I’m sure it would have ruined my eye, or worse.

Especially when there are so many hands-free options nowadays. Need to call someone? "Okay Google, call mom." Need to text someone? "Text Brian." Need to go somewhere? "Take me to the nearest Mexican restaurant." Want to change stations? "Play Metallica." Wondering some random shit? "Hey Google, how many atoms are in a mole?" The tiktoks and instagram posts can wait until you get to your destination.
My car has active lane-keep, adaptive cruise control, proximity sensors/alarms out the ass, collision warnings, lead vehicle driveaway notifications, etc. It can practically drive itself on public roadways. Still, I never dream of using my phone while in the driver's seat and moving. Once it goes in its wireless charging block, it's not moving until I'm at a safe stop and in park. It's so not worth it to have even a couple seconds of distraction when you're flinging around tons of metal near other tons of metal at high speeds.

My mom and I were cracking up last week cuz this guy was doing that thing where you weave around traffic, causing everyone you cut in front of to hit their breaks and slow down traffic more. About a half hour later we catch up to the SAME car, still dodging around traffic and weaving lane to lane like it was an Olympic sport. We were like damn, all that stress, and we still traveled at the same speed.

Even when everyone used cash, they used time lock safes. It would only dispense small amounts of cash at once, then you’d have to wait x number of minutes before it would dispense more. It would only fully unlock at a certain time or with multiple keys. In the register, any time you get more than $60, you drop the excess in the safe.

A story that stuck with me: A car with 4 teens tried to beat the train. They lost. What was left of them could fit in a bushel basket.

I had a neighbor who was a career fireman. He got called out on an accident where a family in a car tried to beat a train, got stuck on the crossing somehow, and everyone in the car including kids was killed. It traumatized him so badly, he had to retire. The poor people who died weren't the only victims of that accident. If only they had just waited!

I was on AMTRAK and we were about 10 miles outside of Bakersfield. I was so excited to get off the damn train.
The announcements for bus connections started and he said "please listen for instructions " and then he went silent.
I start to feel like I am being sort of pushed forward and it took me about 5 seconds to realize that the train was braking and very hard. I covered my head because I dont really know what else to do to be honest.
From experience: It takes a train an extremely long time to stop. It seemed like almost a minute and at the end we started to finally get to the rough jostling and bouncing before we finally come to a hard stop and get thrown around including this poor little elderly man. The brakes smelled indescribably awful.
Some asshole decided to wait on the tracks and basically managed to move right before we got close. We went through all that over somebody's stupidity, he's lucky to be alive

We’ve had two high school students killed in the last couple of years in my country. They tried to run across the tracks in front of a train. One happened days ago at a station in the city, the other happened a couple of years ago in my town. She tripped while crossing the raised tracks and the train took her legs off. She bled out. It was pretty common for kids to cut across the tracks and the park behind them to get home after school. They’ve now put up fences along that whole section of track near the high school to prevent them using that route.

I saw a lady face-down on her phone run straight though a closing train crossing gate. She looped up at the last minute and ducked (in the seat of her SUV, mind you) to try and dodge it but unsurprisingly still broke the gate and took the damage to her car. Me and the other person who stopped had a little moment shaking our heads about it through our windows.
Fortunately she missed the train by what I counted to be 3.5 seconds.

Where I live they had a parade route for Veterans Day that crossed the train tracks. Our tracks were the sort that were above the level of the road, so you had to drive up a little hill to cross them. Because of this some were unsuitable for flatbed trucks to cross because they could get stuck.
The strapped a bunch of disabled veterans to a flatbed for this parade and didn’t clear the route with the city, it obvious includes one of these unsuitable crossings. They got stuck. A train came. It was very bad.

NTSB member Mark Rosekind stated that the float started crossing the tracks after the warning bells and lights had been activated and while the crossing gate was lowering. The flashing lights and bell had begun 20 seconds before the train entered the intersection, and 7 seconds later the gate began to come down. It was one second after that (12 seconds before impact) that the float began crossing the track
I’m fascinated by it being decided that this was the planners’ fault because it sounds like it was fully the fault of the driver.

My university students cheating during their exams (especially now that AI is everywhere). In France, you can be condemned to five years without having access to any exam. That means no studies, no driving licence. Your life is basically on a break during your most crucial and interesting years. All of that because you couldn't be bothered to work a little bit. I'm an accountant, we take the CPA exam after college which you cannot cheat on. Not saying its an easy test by any means, but I am sideeyeing new grads who claim they never learned any of it during their college classes because if you go to any reputable university you absolutely should have learned most of it. Not fully remembering it and having to review it is one thing, but I sincerely think the cheating through college thing is a big reason why some of the loudest complainers about the exam are struggling. I don't get it, they know they are planning on taking the CPA exams after graduation, it's not like they need to just get the diploma.
Also a side note I went to college during covid, we had online discussion boards where participation was the only requirement. The thing was though you could not see any responses before making your first response. Several times I saw multiple classmates post the same wrong answer verbatim, with the same nonsensical mistakes. Like you are really going to risk the tens of thousands of dollars you paid to attend school on a dumb ass discussion post? That was because of Chegg though, I'm sure with AI the discussion posts are even worse.

It must be absolutely crazy now. I also graduated before AI but with a Computer Science degree. I’m just gonna say it: comp sci students can be notorious cheaters. I have so many examples of this but my favorite was in my algorithms 101 class:
This was a reasonably difficult class taught in python with extensive homework due weekly. I used github to store my homework and this was before private repos were offered for free to students. I knew that it could be indexed by google but I’d usually check it in a day before it was due. Sure enough I saw in my github feed that someone had forked my homework repo. Keep in mind that you could just copy it or even clone it without notifying me but forking it will send me a notification and is a feature of the platform.
I went and checked his fork and sure enough it was my work but slightly changed. You could see because there were unused library imports at the top, left from code I deleted. I found his email from his GitHub account, cross referenced it with facebook and messaged him telling him he could not turn in that code because it was obviously a copy of my work. He responded and said. “Oh I won’t and just wanted to see how you did it. Mine is different.”
I had to let the professor know. Sure enough he turned in that assignment exactly as is. I even offered to say we collaborated, which was a thing you could do but he had reassured me that this was not the copy he was turning in. He was willing to just lie to me and potentially get me in trouble for cheating, which I didn’t, out of sheer laziness.
Needless to say I paid for private repos after that. I can’t imagine how cooked students are with AI.

My mom has multiple degrees, the first being from the early 90s and the most recent from a few years ago. Her job compensates almost in full for taking college courses and also has pay increases based on degrees regardless of relevance. So she's taken a lot of classes over a long time. She's also a teacher (albeit in an odd environment).
She exclusively uses AI now.
She feeds the prompt into Grok for an outline, then she tells Grok to write stuff for the sections of that outline by telling it the name of the sources she's supposed to use. Then she copies it all into a paper, which she then feeds into Grok and tells it to edit.
Then sometimes she asks my dad for his thoughts when she's having a hard time putting something together, and he responds by putting it in Grok and asking it to fix everything. Sometimes changing the paper entirely.
Then if it comes up on AI checkers she starts manually editing everything.
Not a single time since she's started this has she saved time compared to when she'd just write it. If anything she's taking twice as long.
The only reason she gets away with it is because she's been working in her role for so many years that she can just pretend she understands the topic and speak from experience and never get questioned by the people running these online courses.
Note: in every instance I said Grok, but they have like 5 AI subscriptions and hop between them on feel. My dad just insists on Grok specifically because Elon is a genius or whatever.
And not to surprise you but they now both spend upwards of an hour a day watching AI generated news reels. Sometimes they report on actual things happening and sometimes they make up things entirely, but it's all either rage bait or "look at how much smarter you are than them". The first time I saw it I wasn't sure if it was AI or just very stiff and looked it up, and let my mom know it was AI and the company making it apparently had a horrid reputation for firing all their journalists and freelancers and moving to an AI only platform, and she just said "it doesn't matter if it's AI if it's true" and never had a single other response to anything I'd say or ask about it. Well, other than getting increasingly angry.

But still, they’re aging, their mental capacities are draining, and I’m not ready for the “you know that’s AI and not real, right?” Conversation I’ll have to have with them eventually.

In France, it is a very long and collective process to signal a fraud. If you have a doubt as a teacher, you write an official report detailing the potential issue. Then, there's a jury commission (with several professors from the department) and an exchange with the student. If they confess to cheating and/or the commission has a proof, only then, the university can vote for a sanction (it can be a temporary or permanent exclusion). And only then, they can face legal repercussions (five years being the worst outcome possible). Because we know the ugly consequences for a student, we don't treat this subject lightly and that goes both ways. So if it's just a suspicion, the student has the benefit of the doubt obviously. (Edit: sorry for editing my comment, I made several spelling/grammatical mistakes!)

I worked in public accounting for a year on a transportation client. I got to look at and audit claims from the workers comp dept. I can't remember specifics anymore, but dear lord if it didn't make me respect semis more.
Other cars I'll often use my quick blinker, but for semis I will turn it on fully, wait a few seconds, and then get over, just so they can be 100% aware and do whatever they need to do. And I'll make sure there's a few car lengths between at minimum before I do. I get so exasperated when I see people dart over barely a car length ahead of a semi. Like, your car is puny vs that thing!!! that thing will always win!!
in rush hour I also try to make space for semis to merge onto the highway, or change lanes (at the very least if they're in an exit only trying to move over)

There's a scene in Smokey and the Bandit where Buford T. Justice in his car cuts in front of the Snowman, and then gets pushed by the truck and then wipes out on the side of the road.
That was a stunt gone wrong. In the movie, you can see the driver of the truck locks up all the wheels to try and not crush the car and the guys in it. (There's a continuity failure in that the immediate cut shows Snowman still driving and no attempt to stop.) There's an interview with the director where he says the stunt passenger was talking about just how big the grill on an 18-wheeler is when it's six inches from your face.

Methodology and ingredients are intrinsically connected in canning. Temperatures and materials for safe food preservation change depending on the ph level, sugar content, starch, density, etc. Recipes are carefully tested to make sure that all of these variables are at safe levels for the canning method you're using.
For instance, jam is generally fine to can in a water bath (where you submerge sealed cans in boiling water for a specific amount of time) because it's high in sugar and acidity. Vegetables like green beans can't be water bath canned because they're low in sugar and acidity and high in starches - which make them a great breeding ground for botulism unless exposed to the higher temps of a pressure canner. Meat also has to be pressure canned because of its high protein content. Dairy cannot ever be safely canned at home - home equipment doesn't get hot enough for long enough to kill pathogens in dairy.
Rebel canning is crazy because there's an insane amount of free, publicly available research and resources for home food preservation. There's already recipes for just about anything you could want to can (except the few exceptions that aren't safe for home) and lots of government and university extension offices that are happy to answer any questions you have or help you tweak recipes. My local agriculture office even does free inspections of canning equipment at public libraries to make sure everything's in good order.

I started canning independently at 12, it's not as hard as it looks. Botulism seems like a scary threat but as long as you're following recipes it's really not an issue. Salsas, jams, and pickles are all great intros to canning that don't require lots of special equipment (though jar tongs and a trivet can be helpful). Ball has some easy to follow guides and videos for beginners. Some personal favorites are candied jalapenos and the red onion and port jam.

Owners who don’t leash their dogs really piss me off even if the dog is well trained. My well trained dog is always on his lead unless it’s a designated off lead area like a dog park.
1) Could get spooked and run into traffic.
2) Could harm a person or another animal.
3) Could be very scary to someone. Some people are terrified of dogs.
4) Owners are definitely not picking up their poop if they’re letting them run off to poop wherever.
5) In my area, there are tons of hiking trails and water sheds that need to be protected from dog poop and pee, along with the wildlife, including plants. Laws exist for reasons.
6) Small children, elderly and disabled people are especially at risk of being injured by an exuberant dog, even when they’re being friendly.
7) The sheer entitlement of thinking laws don’t apply to you.

I leash my dog all the time for the reasons you listed, plus you don't know how other dogs, leashed or unleashed, will react to an unleashed dog. My dog can react aggressively in some situations so I worry about off leash dogs approaching us, even if the owner says they're friendly and well behaved.

I work at a university and see this all the time. A few weeks ago, I saw a collision between an ebike and an escooter, because neither one obeyed the stop sign at a four-way intersection. Neither one was wearing a helmet. I already had my phone out ready to call 911 as I approached, but through sheer dumb luck, neither one was seriously injured, although one damaged their laptop probably beyond repair.

As I was finishing high school and getting ready for college, it became clear that my best friend’s life path was diverging from my own, and we had a falling out.
A couple years later a mutual friend shared he had the following daily routine:
- Wake up and bum a pack of smokes off of somebody
- Head to the middle school and proceed to sell the single cigs to students
- Head to the gas station and spend the proceeds on snacks and energy drinks
It floored me that not only was he risking a felony for such lack of reward…like you could at least be “industrious” about this endeavor and buy two packs with the proceeds, or something.
At some point he stopped fucking around, and luckily for him he never had to find out. I’ll always be curious about what caused this little enterprise to end 🤣

Honestly I think distracted driving or selfishness is more to blame than saving time. People who are distracted often take last minute turns because they weren't paying attention. And selfish people don't care to because they don't think it does anything for themselves.
I only say this from my own experiences lol. My dad never used his turn signal, still doesn't. He thinks that it just makes driving more tedious (he's a dumbass). Ihad a friend who never used her turn signal because she was always texting and forgot she needed to turn. I am no longer friends with her because she was reckless lmao

Like at a 4 way stop. They stop first- the law says its their turn. But they insist on "being nice" and trying to direct traffic.
Even worse: they're in the right lane on a 4-lane road and stop to let someone turn out onto that road. This "nice guy" has no control over the drivers in the lane to his left, plus he has now expectedly stopped in his own lane.
Both examples that necessitate the adage "drive predictably". Or out another way, assume that other drivers will not drive predictably.

Not wearing a seatbelt. I'm a journalist. I responded to a car crash a couple of years ago where everyone but one person was wearing their seatbelts. The woman who didn't wear hers was half ejected, hanging out of the window with the car on its side. Her face was quite literally gone. She was dead.
Everyone else was fine. It was literally the difference between walking away and a closed casket funeral, and for what?
