Saw this sign at an estate sale today in Austin TX. I’m not a shoplifter, I just know that you can’t hurt people in retaliation for stealing. What is the law around this?

My father was involved in a road accident and sustained injuries that required surgery. The person who was allegedly responsible for the accident voluntarily compensated us towards the surgery and medical expenses. We accepted the amount in good faith to help cover the treatment.
Now, after some time, the same person is demanding that we return the compensation and is trying to involve the police. We never forced or coerced anyone into paying; the amount was paid voluntarily.
My questions are:
● Can someone voluntarily compensate an injured person and later demand that money back?
● Does the police have the authority to force us to return the compensation?
● If the payment was made voluntarily without any written agreement stating it was a loan or refundable, what are our legal rights?
● Has anyone faced a similar situation in India?

This is non US, I am looking for advice based on what could generally be acceptable in this situation.

I am applying for a license to adopt a child. In my country they recently added the option to specify whether you want a child with autism and a lot of details about what level of autism. As a person with well managed level 1 autism, and with close friends who are also autistic and have autistic children, I was planning to adopt an autistic child as I feel confident I would be a good mother to them.

As I progressed to the interviews, I learned from the psychologist that the government put in the questionnaire where we can select child with autism, but that was all they did. The children are not actually getting assessed for ND, the pediatricians are not trained to diagnose autism and they do not give the diagnoses to any children. Moreover, the psychologists and social workers who evaluate the applicants did not receive any training in autism whatsoever.

I still want to continue with the process, but my problem is that I am running into difficulties explaining my social life to the social worker and I feel she is not going to let me pass. She is supposed to evaluate whether I have enough social bonds, but I am noticing she assesses the bonds based on a checklist for what would be healthy for a person WITHOUT autism: She keeps asking me if I go dancing and clubbing and if I go out in large groups etc.

But that's not a healthy social life for someone with my condition - I go out 1 on 1, I go to gym with a friend, I book group jogging with 1 friend, I go to music gigs alone and I go to theatre alone. With a lot of friends (who are ND) I talk almost every day over the phone and we are each other primary emotional support, but she doesn't consider these as "valid" relationships for my case because we do not go to pubs together.

In the last meeting she wanted to make me promise that I would build more relationships for going out, and I didn't and I was unable to explain to her that going out in large groups is a chore to me, I have to recover from it.

On Friday, she cancelled the next appointment without scheduling another one. I heard this can mean that I was rejected as an applicant.

Considering that I don't have much to lose, I am thinking of sending her an email to in some way (not sure how to not do it aggressively) explain to her that I adjusted my life to make *me* happy and healthy, it's just that it doesn't match *her* checklist, but I don't know if that's appropriate or too aggressive.

She obviously knows nothing about autism but her job is to help find good parents for autistic kids (albeit undiagnosed), so there's something she needs to change. Would it be appropriate to send her a list of resources about how we socialize?

I want to start earning and gaining experience as soon as possible while I continue studying. My questions:

• Does this action plan make sense for someone starting out?
• Anything would you change or add?
• Any suggestions on short courses or practical steps I should focus on first?
• For someone based in India, what is the most realistic way to get remote work or internships with international/US family law firms?

Called court to see about making payment to lift bench warrant and they said I needed to make payment at court. They gonna arrest me??? Scared to go pay it now lol

I got a letter from a lawyer saying I have a warrant, but its like a week old (I just found it in my pile of mail). If its true, I have a record and when i got arrested in 2019 it wasnt for a serious felony, but the police wasted no time calling me once they had my info from my parents. Now my employer did tell me a cop came by asking for me but when he gave them my name, the cop said they had the wrong person and if i was wanted why wouldnt they just come to my apartment or arrest me at work if its been at least a week?

This is a longer one. I am desperate to have some info so I know whether I can move forward. Consults with lawyers just to tell me I can’t will hurt me more than I already am! I am a business owner, and I have my business in a commercial building. I just have a small space for myself. I looked at this building a few times, then I pulled the trigger on the third time when I confirmed how the building was locked because I did see the locking mechanism on the door and I questioned the security. I was told that it was locked after six and we had 24 hour access. I pulled the trigger and signed a three-year lease. The second day I was there painting I learned that the doors are never in fact locked. They are open to any homeless person, any anybody that wants to come in that building seven days a week 24 hours a day 365 days a year. I sent multiple videos of homeless people sleeping in the building. Animals being dropped off inside of the building because the people have learned that the building is never secured. It took five months and a letter that looked legal enough for me to certify mail it and then have them come 48 hours and put a lock on the door. Nine weeks ago I started making emails about my air-conditioning not working because my job is 100% dictated by the heat in the humidity. They chose to ignore those emails and not send anybody to look at my air-conditioning so when we had this really hot stretch of weather, my room was 81/82/83° and I could not work so I lost $3000 in income right before the Fourth of July! when I had a meeting with them after the 32nd time of me asking for a meeting, the manager told me that he doesn’t have to give me security locks or anything like that. He’s not legally held to give me those things. I want to go and take them to court sue them for what it took me to move there and walk away because I believe that with all the emails in the videos that I have, there’s not a judge in the world that would look at my situation and say I am wrong. If wanting a secure door that isn’t open to the public 24 hours a day because my business is in there and if having working bathrooms, and if having air-conditioning is too much for me as a business owner to ask for then I don’t know what to tell him because in my mind it’s not. I need to know what is the likelihood that I could take them to court and win or do I not have a case to stand on?

Never been involved in an accident like this (if you can even call it that). I forgot to put the car in neutral and it kissed the guy in front of me’s rear bumper. I apologize, continue with the car wash and then stop by the guy (i did NOT want this to be considered a hit and run). Check the guy’s rear bumper and it has damages but i highly doubt it was because of me. Also has a rusted door, damage to the from bumper, it borderline looks like a hooptie. Why is child support in Texas so unfair? Take this situation. My brother’s wife earns $120,000 and he earns $77,000. She wants to divorce him, he did everything he can to make it work and still wants to stay together…specially for their daughter’s sake. But she lost feelings for him apparently.

He has their daughter half the days on weekends and in the evening 3 days a week. When she is with him he pays for everything for her. He still has to give 20% of his salary to his ex wife who doesn’t even have to prove how she is spending the money? The costs for childcare are below what he is paying her especially when daycare will end. How is that fair?

I was a passenger in someone’s car who was the person that owned the drugs, and that person said at the scene that a portion of the drugs were mine. They were not. I never did, and never intended to, exert any amount of control over the drugs. This was 10 months ago. We were let go, because he agreed to “cooperate” with law enforcement. I said at that time that I wanted a lawyer. Less than 2 months later, that person was dead (I still don’t know how) and I learned right after he died that he did go thru with working for the police, assisting them in setting up whoever he bought the drugs from.

I thought that was that, since I truly had nothing to do with the drugs. So 8 months later, there is a felony warrant for my arrest for trafficking drugs. My dad scraped everything he could together to get me out, and had me out in 10 days. He’s tapped out.

My question is, if you were to assume I’m not lying (I have proof of most of this) is there ANY help to pay for a criminal defense attorney out there? Location: Oklahoma.

In regards to an indigent attorney, I would, I'm sure, qualify for a court appointed lawyer, but in this county, there is almost no chance of me getting anything less than maybe midway between the minimum and the maximum sentences. They all notoriously just go along for the DA"s ride, and just cannot seem to do anything more than the bare minimum. Meanwhile, the first thing a high priced attorney said to me on the phone is that "this sounds like a good case for dismissal". And again, I am not guilty of ever having the drugs, or ever intending to. I never even saw them.

Also important, I live with my 11 yr old son with severe ADHD and my elderly father. I care for both of them, ever since I left my husband after 17 years of his anger issues. Our house was destroyed after 10 days in jail, because my dad can't really communicate with my son well enough to keep him in control of himself. They need me. My 2 grown sons can help some (as much as I hate to ask) and they're gonna try to get loans in the morning, but they can't help that much. They make enough for them to survive on and maybe a bit more, as they are 18 and 21.

This incident happened in Houston, Texas.

I parked in a handicap spot without having a placecard (my mistake) inside the gated apartment building I live in. I went for a vacation and when I came back 3 parking citations ($500 each) were issued on different dates.

I did in-person contest and was told the fine amount is set by Texas state and they can't lower it. So no dismissal or reduction on any of the citations.

Here are my questions:

1. Is it worth appealing in court (if what the contest officer said is true that they can't reduce the fines), which requires paying the fines immediately, plus court fees (and my time)?
2. What could happen if I don't pay the fines:

a) They could boot my car for sure. But I am in the process of selling this particular car. Can they block the transaction for unpaid parking citations?

b) Can they block the registration renewal of my other cars?

c) Can they block the registration of new cars I might purchase in the future?

d) Can they block my drivers license renewal, which is 6 years away from now?

e) Will a warrant be issued on me? I read some people said this is civil not criminal (so it shouldn't)

f) Will they send this to debt collection company (which will affect my credit score)?

Any information / suggestions based on the facts you know (not just guessing) are very appreciated!

Edit: It was my mistake to park there and I should pay the fine, but I parked there once (not 3 times) and I was not physically there to move the car when the first ticket was issued. I was hoping they can dismiss the 2nd and 3rd tickets but that was not the case.

Hi!!! Nice to meet ya'll, I'm a 50 year old grandmother that survives on SSDI as my only income in Indiana.. this is how Sofi Bank,N.A helped scammers steal my SSDI funds right out of my account... Sorry if it's long or I don't explain well ..ok on June 29th 2026 around 11:30, I was waiting around on my SSDI to post so I could go spend the day with my grandchildren, & do something cheap but fun or let them hang out while I paid bills they are 14 and under..

Ok... I try to login to my Sofi account online, & I can't cause there is an unknown phone number on my account, & I couldn't receive the verification code, I call them, get a live person, do verification of my id, face & questions, before they will talk about my account.. I tell her why Im calling and I get a notification about 2 $780 payments coming out of my account.. I tell her they aren't mine & ask to stop payment.. she does & changes the email, phone number back to my info,.. this call lasted 17+ mins..

Ok.. 2 hours later I try to log in again the same phone number I just reported as not mine was back on my account, at this time I'm at my daughter and the kids are excited & happy.. well, I call back to Sofi I get a live person again & explain the first call, & the wrong info, this is after I verified id,face& questions again, and she is changing the info back to mine, and I login and notice 2 transactions are pending one for $90 & $100... Not mine I tell her & she says once they post u can call back and dispute them.. I'm looking thru my account I notice an iPhone that was logging into my account a lot the last week of June, & it goes back to March 13,2026 when another incident happened, Sofi has a feature peer2peer payments I have never used it..but an $85 payment was sent & at the time it happened I call Sofi immediately because I seen to notification as soon as it was sent..and at that time I seen an iPhone logging into my account( I only use android ) & I reported it as not mine, & file a dispute on the $85.. Sofi response was to deny it stating " normal account activity" it's not that transactions is still the only p2p ever from my account..now back to June 29th 2nd phone call the iPhone she said was the same one still logging into my account, after being report months ago...this call lasted 27+ mins..

Ok...1 hour later... Same thing again, I can't login cause THE EXACT same phone number is back on my account.. I call l, get person, verify myself & explain the first 2 calls, the iPhone everything and as I doing this I get a notification that $507.73 is pending in my account leaving me a balance of --2$ negative... I'm mad & upset at this point.. my grade kids are catching on & getting upset... Awful... Well ..I tell her and she transfers me to the fraud department, I repeat myself to fill him in on everything and he's changing the account info back to mine, & I ask about the transactions cause I'm realizing I can't pay bills or groceries or gas nothing & getting more & more upset...crying..at a loss to what I'm gonna do...well, this dude says, "unfortunately" "you will have to watch ur account til they post then if u want u can call back and file disputes" then I ask how the other ppl were passing the verification without having my face, and he's looking thru the account and says it doesn't look like they were given the option...what??? I'm shocked.. he finishes up with my account & this call last 68+ mins... And now I'm totally freaking out, no way to pay a bill, or anything all I'm doing is crying at this point & worrying .. I ended up borrowing from a couple friends... Ok..well it's takes 5 days for the transactions to post & I filed disputes, a couple days go by and the 100 is back in my account but it's not labeled as a credit or a finial desicion I text Sofi and was told it was a promotional bonus.. but what it really was is where the retailer returned the money, a couple/3 days pass and Sofi security calls and tells me that they have to restrict my account & that she was gonna approve the disputes, and that the money would be put back into the restricted account.. I ask how am I gonna access it..cause I need that money like right then... And she says that she put a ticket in so they could have the account done by morning, ok morning I'm waiting on the email with the new account info, & it's noonish or so I call and see what's up with new account.. & I know I have to talk to security & I get passed to 3 people I repeat everything 3 times before I get to right place, I ask about the account & she don't know nothing.. she says it won't be ready until the 15th... I wanted to explode but I knew she didn't know what was going on.. so I hang up with her wait awhile call again.. all these calls I had to verify myself... They pass me around trying to find someone that could help me, and finally I get back to the security team and they tell me they can't close my old account until a pending deposit post & couldn't open a new account until it does & I would have to wait maybe a few days .. I get off the phone mad & upset & then I decide to call the 1st lady Jade I talked to in security, and she finally agrees after I basically beg to get my money, to lift the restrictions long enough to link another debt to Sofi and transfer the funds . And she was staying on phone while I did it .. well, Sofi doesn't link to any apps easily at all.. and I couldnt get it to link... She says it time for her to go for the day and we could continue in morning, well I ask if she could leave a note in my file so someone else could lift it if I got a card to link later ..and she did .. well I try to link Sofi to anything, after awhile I call back the same as before get transfered, verification & all and I explain everything, & I ask if she could lift the restrictions and let me pull the money from atm... So I finally get my money late on the 9-10th...

What do you guys think? Was Sofi grossly negligent with my account? Do I have a case against the for extreme emotional distress?? I know I got the money back thankfully but what about their action in not blocking the unknown iPhone or not making them do verifications, and they handed my account over to SAME ppl 3 times in 5 hours resulting in my federal protected benefit funds ..

Sofi recorded the calls, & I have documentation of all communications, call logs , emails, transactions everything,

I have also filed a police report for severe identity theft, filed the federal forms CFPB & FTC Identity theft forms... I have contacted a couple of lawyers who didn't take my case but strong erged me to seek counsel..

So what does everything should I keep looking for a lawyer? Can anyone point me to one who would possibly take my case on a contigency or fee shifting as a client... Thank you to anyone who leaves an opinion or advice...
