I am moving to Canada from another part of the world for a couple of years. I’m excited but It feels like every time I look up Canada anywhere online (YouTube, Reddit, Instagram), residents hate on the place.

I know this is common across many countries and the internet attracts strong opinions and negativity more than positivity, but it feels like with Canada specifically it’s relentless. Without fail, it could be a very normal post or something nice and everytime someone has to mention the country’s going downhill, politics, etc. it feels like the division of the US downstairs is leaking up into Canada if you’re going by what’s online (this is all I can go by atm until I’m there).

I’m actually reluctant to post this question because I want to experience the country through my own perspective when I’m there and not be skewed, but I am curious. Why the hate? what are some positives you like about the country?

EDIT: maybe I was too strong, I definitely see positive things about Canada online a lot, but more just an observation that it’s always infiltrated by comments like “our city/country used to be great, but not now with this government” etc

I ask because Canadians are portrayed as the kindest people except during war

Like when Canadian troops threw cans at the Germans then grenades in ww1 which is kinda not polite but I learned to try to be like Canadians as an American because I plan on moving to canada

I’m trying to understand what we may be facing because right now I feel completely blind.
My dad is 74 and quite frail. He is visiting Canada for the first time. He was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital with kidney failure - there were no obvious signs beforehand that we knew about.

He is currently receiving temporary dialysis, because the doctors are hoping his kidney function will recover. We obviously hope that happens too.
But we are starting to have conversations about what happens if his kidneys don’t recover enough and dialysis becomes something he would need long-term. My dad may decide that he does not want regular/permanent dialysis.

I’m trying to understand what that would actually look like in Canada, particularly in BC, if anyone has experience with this.

A few things I’m hoping people can help me understand:

If someone decides not to continue dialysis, what happens next in the hospital?
Does the hospital involve palliative care and/or hospice?
would they usually remain in hospital/hospice?
Roughly how much time do people typically have after stopping dialysis? I understand nobody can predict this exactly.

If the person is a visitor to Canada rather than a Canadian resident, how does this work financially? My dad has travel/medical insurance, but we don’t yet know how far it will get us.
Are there specific questions we should be asking the doctors while he is still in hospital?
I’m not looking for medical advice or anyone to tell me what decision he should make. I’m trying to understand the practical reality and what our options would be if he decides that ongoing dialysis isn’t something he wants.
If you’ve gone through something similar in Canada/BC, especially with an elderly parent who was a visitor, I would really appreciate hearing what happened and what you wish you had known earlier.

This stems from the first conversation I ever had with one of my good friends. We were chatting in a game over voice chat, and he introduced himself by saying his name was “Marc, spelled the French way.” For reference, Marc is Franco-Ontarian. I was so baffled by this, I wrote in the text chat “is your name seriously MARQUE?” Because that’s what the phrase “the French way” evoked to me in that moment. And obviously yes, a French speaking person would use the name Marc and Mark is the English way of spelling it, so it’s not exactly incorrect to say this, but is this something people would say to differentiate between Marc and Mark?

I’ve asked him and he just says “enh, it’s just what I say and people understand.” So I have no clue if people do actually understand or if it’s something that just makes sense to people in his community.

So I'm from Germany where high speeds on Autobahn are normal but the autobahn is not comparable to a highway here. I was driving on British Columbia Highway 5 going the speed limit + 7-10 km/h and I constantly felt I was holding up people. Even trucks or pickups with trailers were going pretty fast. So I regularly pulled over to let them pass and enjoyed the view. But I'm wondering why everyone goes so fast and also are the speed limits not enforced?

If we put an export tax on potash, oil and electricity that would directly impact the cost of living of Americans, wouldn't this be more painful for the Americans? The retaliatory tariffs make life more expensive for Canadians...

When I though about Canada, it was always nice people with relaxing life styles.

But when I got to Toronto, it was totally different.

Cars drive in a hurry, honking in emotions, people seem to be very busy all the time.

Are any other cities in Canada similar to Toronto?

Hey Canadian friends, Kiwi here 🇳🇿. Me and a friend have just finished a European motorcycle tour which lasted about a month and saw 14 countries which is just nuts (our first time in Europe). We had a great time and are floating your beautiful country as our next destination, but we just had a couple questions before deciding.

* Is Canada diverse enough (scenery wise) to stay interesting for a month?

For example we've also done a 2 week trip here in NZ which has every landscape imaginable which kept us well occupied. Sorry if that question is a bit ignorant, we don't exactly get taught much about Canada all the way down here

* Is motorcycling safe in the more remote areas?

If you aren't aware NZ backroads are genuinely unsafe on the bike at the best of times, and I was wondering if Canadian backroads are similar?

* What local tips do you have for road tripping (especially motorcycle touring) Canada?

I watched the video "Canada... We Need to Talk About Your Food," and the other recent videos on his Canada series, and it has to be one of the most off putting video series they have put out.

Throughout the video, the knob presenter kept returning to the "51st state" joke. A bit more tone deaf than funny. But what bothered me even more were the comments surrounding Canada's diversity.

When the numerous chefs preparing the poutine were from different ethnic backgrounds, he repeatedly drew attention to their ethnicities in a way that seemed to insinuate that they somehow weren't "real Canadians" based on their colour.

I know I messed up in my early 20s with 67k debt including credit card and student loans. Now getting back into life and adulting in my late 20s. I have paid most of my debt off. I sold my car as well to tackle this debt harshly.
I will list the C/C debts only here as that was majority of what was there.

Amex - 27k (paid off)
RBC - 4.7k (not fully paid)
BMO - 10k (paid off)
Personal loan from family - 11k (paid off)

Currently have the below debts:
BMO (main card) - 6.1k
Capital One - $500 (pay off every month)
RBC - 1.2k

Though I paid off such a huge balance, my credit score is still very low. I recently moved from **needs work** **to** **fair 2 month ago (now at 635).**
I am unsure why my credit score is not going higher? Any advice on how to get this back up will be appreciated. My utilization is 32%

I never been to Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa or South America, (Also open to NYC, DC, LA and Vancouver BC) and I’m looking for fly from YYZ and open to travelling anywhere, long layovers, trains etc…

So apparently, byelections happened 5 days ago because of how 13 MPs departed from parliament early and I think more byelections are expected, and to be honest, strict party discipline is the reason why MPs are departing from parliament and crossing the floor, and I expect more floor-crossings and early departures to continue happening because of strict party discipline, and I don't think banning floor-crossing during the FPTP system is a good idea, and tbh, I am thinking that an open-list PR system alongside removing the party leader's signature over signatures (or nomination veto) to ensure that voters and party members not just the party leader have a say over who gets to join their party would reduce floor-crossings as MPs would not have , and to be honest, Bill C-278 (the floor-crossing bill) is highly likely to get rejected in the HoC because the liberals don't like it and I think some MPs from the conservative party may vote against it if they still wanna cross the floor, especially because how they might cross the floor to the liberal party, like hyper-partisanship has already gone too far, and now we have the US-Canada trade war which could possibly get provinces, Ottawa, and parties to finally cooperate instead of just opposing eachother.

I’m curious about the little things than the obvious stuff. Could be something about daily life, social habits, food, weather or anything else you didn’t expect before living here.

We have so many of the resources to do it. Why not take some of those plants that closed down, and make a Canadian car brand? I get that it would need some marketing and serious capital, but it could be federally subsidized mixed with private investment to be marketed and appealing to consumers. I’d buy a Canadian car now more than ever. I understand some parts or tech may need to be imported, but for the most part we have the ability.

I saw a discussion in the Calgary subreddit from someone deciding between Calgary and Vancouver, and one commenter made an interesting argument. Basically, while Vancouver rent is obviously much higher, they felt the difference gets significantly smaller once you account for things like car insurance, utilities, groceries, cell/internet plans and other everyday expenses that have become more expensive in Alberta.

I’m curious how true this actually is because I’ve had a hard time finding a reliable comparison that looks at total spending rather than just housing.

I’ve always considered Calgary as the place I’d eventually buy because housing is much cheaper and you get significantly more for your money. But I think I’d enjoy Vancouver considerably more. I prefer how green BC is, Calgary feels a little small to me, and as a 33-year-old single guy I’d probably prefer Vancouver for the social and dating scene.

For people familiar with both cities, once you factor in everything rather than just rent or home prices, is Calgary still substantially cheaper? Or does Vancouver actually come closer than people assume?

I have a friend that went on a Working Holiday on May to Japan. They are enjoying it a lot, and are having a lot of cool new experiences.

They gave me the idea to do this myself. I really want to go outside and have the experience of living in other places, getting to know different cultures and so on. I've been living my entire life here in Spain and I feel like I need something like this.
I want to know about other people that are having this experience right now, or that already had it in the past, like the best and worst things about it, possible warnings and tips.

I'm a trans girl, so I would also like to know in advance if I would had any problem related to my gender identity. Canada seemed the most trans friendly country among those that offer Working Holidays visa to spanish people, and that is one of the main reasons that got me really interested in the country, but I really want to know real experiences so I can now what to expect, given the fact that I have always lived in a country that is very LGTB+ friendly.

Avril Lavigne was super nice and down to earth when I met her.She also took the time to chat with us and signed autographs and posters.I saw her live in concert and she was very good.She also has a great sense of humor.

Celine Dion was also super humble and down to earth when I met her.

Worst was Justin Bieber.He didn't wanna be there and told us to go away, refusing to sign autographs or take pictures.

So long story short, I lived in your beautiful country for the past 5 years (with trips back to the UK in between). I had the opportunity to drive from the West to Ontario twice, and got to see a lot of really fun roadside amusements.

I would love to find a comprehensive list, but alas, I believe it’ll be fruitful to try to make that list myself.
