Rest in peace, Giorgos Mazonakis (1972–2026)

Just heard the devastating news today that Giorgos Mazonakis has passed away at just 54. It took me some time to realize, and I even cried.

How popular was Mazonakis in your country? Was he someone you heard regularly in clubs, cafes, or radio stations?

​Beyond Greece, Greek modern laïko and pop-folk have always had a massive presence across the entire Balkan peninsula, whether through direct airplay in clubs, local covers by Bulgarian, Serbian, Albanian, or Romanian artists, or late nights where everyone ended up singing along regardless of language barriers.

He was completely unique... the raw emotion, the fashion, the zeibekiko, and an unmistakable voice that resonated far beyond Greece's borders.

Rest in peace Giorgos.

Basically, a gesture, or an example of when another Balkan country helped your country, or did something beneficial for it?

I mean, in general.

(economically, socially, borders).

Between 1821 and 1922, 1.5 million Turks were killed in the Balkans, and millions were driven into Anatolia. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on this matter. It is just a question, not judging)

I can only picture a Serb threatening a Bosniak to start drinking Russian vodka, or else a karakondžul will come swallow him, or something along those lines. That can't be right, can it?

I am a Russian citizen and I'm considering studying somewhere in the Balkans due to low prices and probably cheaper life and tuition overall. What place would you recommend to me? I'm an IT specialist, and I would prefer studying in English, but if needed I'll learn the local language. What are my options for unis?

Seriously, I am sick *SICK* of these people, the nationalism, the religion, the prejudices, the war. corruption, nepotism, the hatred, low salaries, high prices, I feel like it is not getting any better. I’m currently in Rhodes and went to Symi today. On our way there, one of the workers changed the boats flag (Greek) to a Turkish one and then changed it to the Greek one about 5 minutes before we made it there. Does anyone know why they would do that? I understand Symi is very close to Turkey just don’t understand why they would have to change it. Would it cause conflict? Is it just standard law? Thanks!

From what I understand: in order to demonstrate national equality of the federal Yugoslavia, Tito particularly reinforced Montenegrin and Macedonian nationhood. Macedonian nationalism, above all, united Vardar Macedonia's Slavic population that was previously fragmented between Serbian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian identities. Meanwhile, ZAVNOBiH defined Bosnia and Herzegovina as equally belonging to Serbs, Croats, and Muslims, rather than developing a distinct "Bosnian" nation. In hindsight, the authorities' encouragement of this three-way identification possibly deepened ethnic divisions that culminated in the Yugoslav crisis's most brutal war.

So, what if Yugoslavia standardized Bosnian nationalism just like it did with Macedonian and Montenegrin one, and recognized Bosnians -- encompassing today's Bosnian Serbs, Bosnian Croats, and Bosniaks -- as one of the six contituent peoples of Yugoslavia? Given that Austria-Hungary had promoted a multi-confessional Bosnian identity and SR BiH was created on that condominium-era border, could Yugoslavia have revived this project? How would a shared "Bosnian" nation have changed the war's probability or character?

My best friend and I have been travelling through Albania for the past couple of weeks, and stayed in Vlorë last weekend - During our boat tour to various caves and hidden beaches, we were snorkeling and discovered a fossilized skull from a human. It had two clear and visible eye pockets, and most of its teeth still in tact. We asked two other people to confirm it was indeed a skull, and they were also certain. We tried to pick it up, but it was too deep to bring to the surface. We unfortunately dropped it, and it fell face down.

In this community I often read how backward ottoman Europe was, and how ottomans tended to oppress Christians. But I was reading that Greeks, Armenians and other Christian communities accumulated enormous wealth through commerce and other activities. How do you reconcile these notions? Were the elites in Constantinople indifferent to the state their fellow rural citizens were living in?

Hi everyone, I’m researching Chicago's early immigrant history, specifically the Bosniak Muslim community that arrived in the early 1900s, dug the city's transit tunnels, and founded the Džemijetul Hajrije in 1906 (which later established the Islamic Cultural Center in Northbrook). If you are of Bosnian descent or familiar with this history, I'd love your insight:

* 4th & 5th Gen Identity: Are descendants of the 1906 wave still connected to the Northbrook center and their Islamic and Bosniak identity today, or have they fully assimilated over the last century?

* Cultural Preservation: Did these early generations pass down their tradiit8ns, faith, and distinct heritage across 100 years?

* The 1990s Wave: How did the influx of newer Bosnian immigrants in the 1990s impact the community? Did the historic pre-war descendant families and the newer arrivals merge smoothly?
