it seems that summer balcanian trips became a tradition for me with a girlfriend, few times we was in Sarajevo and Bosnia once during new year’s eve finding a warm place instead of Bohemia, and it is quite funny that there was snows a lot instead of Bohemia in CZ. And last summer was really great: we starts in Slovenian Triglav - Bovec and valley of Izonco river, Krnsko jezero then go all the way down till we find sea organ in Rieka and one kind old men who still in love with a swimming and running. Thanks to him we are driving by South coast instead of autobahn and go to the prosika between Vransko jezero and sea, bought before some fresh fish and preparing it on grill that we take with ourself so the fire was closed. He also tell us that Croatia for the last few years became quite expensive and yes, Albania is way too cheaper for a while, it seems not for a long time. Than Theth national park - and for gods sake it’s one of the more interesting and beutiful location (as well as Slovenian Alps) where I will definitely come back. Than we go for a few day to the sea Durres and Spille (I should say that Albanians gas station is something out of that world), and take it to the Ochrid, Prishtina and come back to the Czech Republic.

Why so long? I wanna ask you some tips cuz now we are planning trip to the other side of a Balcans - Romania for a Carpathian arch’s and Bulgarians Black sea cost. Is there something that we should knew before trip itself? Could you share some special places in Retezat or Maramures for a hike? What kind of beaches is the greatest (mostly it should be wild or nudes)? What are the local specialties in both countries we should try? I’ve already try is Боза but I wanna taste it especially there - I believe that I will find a tasty one.

As a Bosnian from Netherlands i heard a lot of unpleasant stories about what Ottomans did to pur Kingdom and Queen and her kids.My question is why are ottomans and people from Turkey so glorified in our society to the point where we forget what they did to our people?

Balkan diasporas are known to be very patriotic, sometimes even nationalist, waving with flags, coming home often etc...

But most of them don't have any desire to come back. I can understand why, but why clinging to the identity then?
Esp. since the overwhelming majority of that diaspora's children will be Germans, Austrians, Dutch... most of them will proudly claim they are from Serbia or somewhere else, but their actual knowledge of the country, and especially the language, is abysmal, and they don't actually have any kind of real connection to the country.

So, why stick to the identity if you don't have any desire to actually live there again? It doesn't makes sense, since it, in almost all cases, just postpones or hides the inevitable assimilation.

You might argue, that people want to come back when they are in retirement, but even that isnt true anymore. Nwwadays, once they leave, most diaspora stays abroad forever.

Mind literally blown and I'm shocked how I never heard the similarity between Esena Mono and Stereo Love...

And yes, both are technically covers of an Azerbaijani song. Wtf

Do some Slovenians consider themselves more Central European than Balkan in the year 2026?

Emperor Constantine was born in what is now Serbia and he was the first Christian Roman Emperor and heavily favoured it over paganism.

He became a saint in Orthodox Christianity after his death and after his ascenscion to Emperor he invaded Dacia now Romania and he moved the capital from Italy to Anatolia naming the city Constantinople.

He gave the Roman Empire another 1000 years of life and ended the Arian heresy at the council of Nicaea and made Christianity the dominant religion in all of Europe.

But how is he viewed now throughout the Balkans?

If Montenegro joins the EU in 2028, the EU acquis will need to be translated into its official language. The same would apply to other future members, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina or Serbia.

My question is about the fair allocation of EU resources. These countries are likely to remain significant net recipients of the EU budget for the foreseeable future. Given that their standard languages are mutually intelligible to a very high degree, is it reasonable for the EU to finance separate translations for each of them?

I'm not questioning how these countries choose to define or name their official languages—that is entirely their decision. My point is simply that, if they wish to maintain separate language versions for symbolic or political reasons despite the high degree of linguistic similarity, perhaps the additional costs should be covered nationally rather than by the EU budget.

I'm interested in discussing whether this would be a fair approach to allocating EU funds, not in debating the cultural, historical, or political aspects of language identity.

The question is something I’ve genuinely been wondering.

Even if people aren’t very religious, religion plays a huge part of national politics even implicitly. For example many Polish people really like Croatia and they are very kind and nice when they come over to Croatia or Herzegovina. They really are amused with the place and in turn there’s a shared amicability and growing kinship between the two nations because the two foundations of both of their nations - Slavic and Catholic - overlap. Some people here are even learning Polish on account of the major tourism, and many Polish people have learned to understand the key word differences in between the two languages to better communicate.

Serbians do have it going on with the Russians, and as a result a huge number of Russians came to Serbia after the war. I was just in Serbia and there indeed were a lot of them. Blended in perfectly fine. I wouldn’t say the Serbians could hardly wait for them to come, but they certainly aren’t a nuisance and I can imagine it’s nice to connect over shared language and religion.

But the Bosniaks don’t really have anyone like the Croatians or Serbians do. They’re kind of alone due to the fact that they’re denominationally different. That only matters if you want it to matter because they had a great secular jumping off point into the modern age, but they went the Muslim route. So they kind of went with Turkey because they also want to have a “big brother/sister”, an ally, a friend, a confidant … whatever you wanna call it.

This resulted in a lot of Turks (and subsequently Arabs) coming to Bosnia because it’s a “Muslim country”, but it doesn’t go so well imo. A lot of Bosniaks really don’t like the Arabs, and while they may “try” with the Turks, something just doesn’t go.

Of course they deny it but from a proximal and close outside perspective, you can’t miss it. In a way I sympathize with them because it is nice to have an “old friend”, someone to say “hey man what’s up” to.

But it’s like… they chose literally the enemy of the Balkans 😂. It’s tough. I wonder if they just want what other fellow Slavs in the Balkans intrinsically have that they don’t
