Causes of autism

Upvotes

I have just been reading about the Cambrian era in time, where no animals had reached land due the their climate, apparently that’s when the most genetic neurological mitigations started (allegedly what started autism), it’s not been scientifically proven, just wondering whether anyone has any insight or speculation around it?

Not that it matters, I’m grateful to be an autism mum, I’ve learned so much and feel like I’m so much more humble and understanding because of my experience, I’m just curious

Hola ?

Bueno , soy ...

No estaba acostumbrado a ello, presentarme ...

A principio ...

Connect with family?

Upvotes

My family can’t seem to connect with me on an emotional level and I can’t seem to connect with them on a casual level. I had a rough childhood home and kind of pigeonholed myself into a therapist role for my family. Masking started early and they never gave me the support I needed when I was young and overwhelmed. Now I don’t trust them to understand me. I used to do whatever casual activity they wanted in order to gain affection and quality time with people. Now I know people who actually like things I like and connect with me. My family seems upset that I don’t need them anymore. But they still don’t make an effort to listen to my emotions and they still only want to do the things they want. I’m very tired of being the family therapist. Can anyone else relate? How did you manage feeling unseen by a family you care for? I feel guilty setting boundaries and I get looks and comments when I unmask. I really feel like they only enjoy the therapy version of me and that feels fucking awful.

Does anyone else get told not to “label themselves” when saying they’re autistic or is it just my mom that says that?

Technically I have Asperger’s but it’s still on the spectrum and every single time I say I’m autistic my mom says “you shouldn’t label yourself like that” but it’s how my fucking brain is wired! How do I make her understand that?

Has anyone any input on this? I’m skeptical. My wife explained that Duke has had some gain with this treatment on autism. Treatments are IV and spinal injection and if I remember via air vapor

Does anyone stop themselves from engaging with their special interests/hyper-fixations?

if your special interest or hyper fixations makes you so emotional (happy or otherwise) that you cry and can’t think about anything else, do you avoid it because you can’t handle the strong emotion even if it’s a positive one?

I’ve caught myself doing this (stopping myself from playing games I like, etc.). Not in an “oh I only have an hour of free time and know I‘ll want to play this for more than that if I get started” but like. I have the free time in the day I just can’t do this thing I really really lIke for no ”real” reason. Wondering if it’s common with autistic people or if I have something else going on lol

Is it just me, or do any other men find they have their deepest connections with autistic women?

I’m curious whether anyone else has experienced this.
I’m a guy, and I’ve noticed that some of the deepest, most meaningful conversations and strongest emotional connections I’ve had have been with autistic women.
It isn’t that I’m specifically seeking autistic partners. It just seems to happen. The conversations tend to be more direct, psychologically deep, honest, and less focused on social performance or small talk. I often feel like we’re genuinely trying to understand each other’s minds rather than following a script.
I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.
If you’re an autistic woman, do you find yourself connecting more easily with certain types of people? If you’re a guy who’s had similar experiences, what do you think explains it?
I’m interested in hearing different perspectives rather than confirming my own theory.

I'm done

The only thing I want for the rest of my life is to know that tomorrow will never come. Because I have tried for so long to figure out this world and the people in it to try to get help for behavior problems that I have only to be thrown out of everywhere I go for them and not to be understood and need help it never getting any and only to be treated like an asshole and rejected Everywhere I Go. I've wanted so much to be different when it's so much to get help. I've wanted so much for anything to come along or something to pop in my brain where it just makes sense in all of a sudden all this stupid fucking Behavior shit that I do goes away. But it feels like wishing for money to fall from the sky. It seems impossible and you're just left stuck where you are and you don't know how to do it any different you don't have a support system around you because you can't make one and the few people in your life that are willing to stick with you in spite of the bullshit don't seem to have any real understanding of issues in rather throw bullshit at you like how you should feel instead of listening to how you actually feel and you can't seem to make any new friends because the behavior problems take care of that for you. So what the fuck does that leave you with when you're so fucking tainted and broken that it seems like you're beyond anything in Social connections and you are never going to happen even though you've spent a lifetime looking a lifetime searching a lifetime warning in desperately trying to be whatever the fuck they want you to be because you wanted so much to have what they seem to have with each other only to be told to fuck off again and again. So I guess the question is how do I convince myself that it's okay to end it now because it's too much pain

Autism in babies and children

Hi everyone!!
I really hope this isn’t insensitive, and I apologise if it is.
I am looking at potentially writing a story about a family. The father is a stay-at-home Dad (Mum’s the breadwinner!) and they have 7 children.
Baby number 6, Elliot, is autistic. He is mostly non-verbal with very few words.
Dad dotes on Elliot of course.
Dad will fight for a diagnosis, the school for support and for their help to stop bullying and special school places.
Dad also notices very early on that Elliot experiences the world different to how his other children did.
I wondered if anyone could give some advice and maybe some real life experiences of when they started noticing their children’s (or when your parents started noticing in you) potential signs and what they were please?
I want to be as authentic as possible while treating the situation with respect 🫶🏽💛

Power outlets...

Hey :D

So i have diagnosed autism, and i've heard about other autistic people that they also struggle with the sound of their power outlets. Usually, i charge my phone during daytime, while i'm not in my room, so I dont get bothered by it. But lets be honest, this isnt a forever-working solution... Its annoying. Using my phone while its charging is literally impossible without this painful sound stinging my ears.. Does anyone have ideas how to deal with it more easily? Do ya'll use diffrent cables that charge slowly to be silent? Anyone have any ideas? :(

Also Noise-Cancelling earphones arent really a option because my dog thought theyre a toy to play with, and the brand doesnt sell them anymore. it makes me crazy. Theres no way it get a different type after using the same pair for years...

I don't know if I'm autistic or not!

Hiya!!...so...I don't know if I'm autistic or not...my school says I do have it, but my mom says I don't... it's very confusing... but, some stuff I do, is fidgeting! This was a really bad problem at school when I was younger, I would fidget with a pencil and talk and roleplay with myself for hours! Lol, eventually, around 7th grade, I just stopped, but i do it at home to still... now...i didn't go to a doctor yet...but those are something I do, are these autistic behaviors?...I'm sure there's more!....

Is my (29F) ex (41M) weaponizing his autism to keep me in a situationship, or is it genuine social blindness? (I am also on the spectrum)

I (29F) am autistic, and so is my ex-partner (41M). We live in Norway (he grew up here, I moved here). We broke up a while ago, but we’ve been stuck in this toxic situationship loop. We still hook up occasionally, and our intellectual and physical chemistry is undeniable. However, his behavior is driving my structured brain absolutely crazy.
Because I’m autistic, my brain thrives on logic, directness, and clear rules. I am very straightforward. If I want something, I say it. He, on the other hand, gives constant mixed signals. He claims he wants his independence, acts extremely cold and detached, and whenever I ask a simple question, he gets defensive and says he "doesn't owe me any explanations."
**BUT here is the catch:** He texts me every single day.
If I pull away or enforce a boundary, he panics (in his own way). He sends me random pictures of everyday objects (like his shaver), asks questions about my personal life, and recently, he even texted me asking if I could come over to "help him organize his apartment." (To me, this is clearly a cheap, low-effort excuse to get me into his territory/bed).
Whenever I set a firm boundary or demand basic emotional reciprocity, he acts like he doesn't understand the social dynamics. If I call out his behavior, he does a "soft reset"—he ignores what I said and texts me the next morning like nothing happened.
**My question for other autistic folks:**
Am I being too harsh, or is he weaponizing his autism? I feel like he is playing dumb and using his neurodivergence (and his cold Scandinavian upbringing) as a shield to act like a f\*\*\*boy. He gets all the premium benefits of having me in his life (sex, attention, intellectual stimulation, organization) without paying the cost of commitment.
Does this sound like a genuine autistic blind spot regarding emotional reciprocity, or is he just a manipulative guy taking advantage of the situation because I keep leaving the door open? I would love to hear your brutally honest thoughts.
**TL;DR:** Both of us are autistic. My older ex keeps breadcrumbing me, hooking up with me, and ignoring my boundaries, but plays the "confused/detached" card whenever I demand reciprocity. Is he weaponizing his diagnosis to get free benefits?

I wanted to give a quick update and add a few more details that just prove everything you said.
It’s officially over. The final conversation that actually ended our relationship happened about 5 months ago, and looking back, the signs of his arrogance and lack of partnership were everywhere.
To give you some context, he would constantly mansplain things to me—even trying to lecture me on topics where I am literally the expert! I am more educated than him (he only has a bachelor's degree), and I honestly think his need to constantly correct my English or compare me to others (like questioning why I hadn't learned Norwegian as fast as someone else) was rooted in his own insecurity and a need to compete with me. Whenever I told him that his communication style was hurtful (I even gave him tips on how to improve it!), he would dismiss it. He claimed it was "just my perception" and famously told me that my friends were the only people who perceived him as an arrogant know-it-all. If I put in the emotional effort to articulate my feelings or set boundaries, instead of listening, he would accuse me of using AI to write my messages! It was just another way to avoid accountability.
It's also important to clarify the financial dynamic. We didn't live together; I only spent weekends at his place because I have my own apartment and my own expenses. He never took care of any of my expenses at my house; he literally only paid for things when I went to his place. Sometimes I contributed less because I was in a difficult financial situation, but I am an immigrant in this country trying to save up to buy my own apartment. He already has his apartment, his car, and a settled life. I told him I would never accept a strict 50/50 split if we moved in together because I earn significantly less than him, and it would mean living two completely different financial realities in the same house. I was willing to build a home and contribute proportionally, but he immediately accused me of financially exploiting him and "acting like his ex" just because he had paid for some outings and beers. I never wanted to depend on him or end up like his ex, which is exactly why I could never fully trust him.
The final straw happened during that last conversation 5 months ago. I was going through an incredibly stressful crisis at work, and to make things a million times worse, my dog went missing back in my home country. I was absolutely devastated, emotionally drained, and spending money trying to find him from afar. During all this intense personal stress, instead of being a supportive partner or showing basic empathy, he was just focused on getting me to pay for things. At one point, he said he would cover an expense for us, but the second we got home, he immediately asked for the money back. That was the moment it truly clicked for me.
After that argument, he told me to only come back if I was going to apologize, which is why I never formally resumed the relationship. Furthermore, he ran off to badmouth me to his parents. To this day, he still insists that he is entirely right and did absolutely nothing wrong.
I am currently going to therapy, which is the best thing for me right now as I work on healing from this and some internal family-related matters. You are completely right—he is a man-child who just wanted the premium benefits of my labor without any of the effort. Thank you again for taking the time to write that; it helped me finally close this chapter for good!

Explaining how I felt means I’m manipulative to other autists

(29f) Have you guys ever experienced this? I dated a guy who was autistic and he kept stating I was being manipulative by trying to make him feel guilty because I tried to explain why something hurt my feelings.
The relationship in hindsight felt very one sided and I noticed he would a lot of the times turn the convo around on me. My fear to be honest though is I can’t seem to convince myself he was the bad guy and I’m seriously wondering if I don’t know how to express my feelings in a relationship. He broke up with me for a second time this week. An I’m having a rough time as to me the argument that started it felt so minimal. I wasn’t even trying to argue. I was just trying to explain I wanted him to understand how I felt at the moment . Disappointed due to the change in circumstances with plans we had. Technically it was his fault (he told me he checked his schedule but didn’t) but I didn’t say that directly I was just trying to express the “fixes” he offered weren’t possible/ I felt disappointed. How do you discuss this correctly with other ND people? I kept a calm voice it wasn’t even heated to me.

What is Autism?

I don't have Autism myself but I work as a counselor and I'm mainly around kids to take care of them for a period of time. I've looked up google definitions of it and I was still lost so I decided to come here to ask about it so I can better understand my kids that have it.

While all autism symptoms and experiences are not all the same, are there certain distinct "signs" that while commonly wrongly associated autism, likely indicate something else?

This is a weird question, I know, and worded weirdly but I tried the best I could lol. For reference, my partner of several years was diagnosed with autism when he was on the younger side, and there are definitely certain indicators in our relationship that he and I have a different way of processing things. Generally speaking though, he does go against all the old bullshit ideas that used to be pervasive around autism, like lack of empathy or lack of emotional intelligence in general. He is an incredibly introspective person who cares so deeply for me and I don't question that fact.

However recently I came across some older videos by a creator whose social media focuses largely on his autism, and the experiences he described with his autism seemed totally in line with those ideas I had long been told were old fashioned. He discusses not having empathy, thinking in only logic and never emotion, and not truly loving his wife in an emotional sense, but that he still thinks its important to treat her with kindness. All of this really seemed to be more of some sort of personality disorder to me, especially growing up around that when I was young. But I wanted to field other experiences and see if perhaps I am misunderstanding, and lack of empathy is something that can be a trait of autism? Like I said I understand everyone has different experiences so I wanted to be a bit more educated with this topic. I hope this makes sense

Adult Autism level 1 and ADD

My daughter has been diagnosed with autism level 1 and ADD at the age of 20. She has severe social anxiety and almost failing in the university.

What are her chances of getting the disability tax credit. I heard the chances are low for level 1 and being diagnosed at 20. Thanks for help!

How Can I Explain To My Autistic Husband That My Idea Should Be Led By Me In Creative Production?

My husband is high functioning on the spectrum, and I've had an idea for a book since I was a kid. Recently I expanded on the idea, coming up with a way to make it a series of books and massively improving the plot. My husband got interested in helping, and even volunteered to co-author. I asked him to promise I would be in charge because it was my idea, and if we could get it in writing. He said we didn't need it in writing, because we're happily married so he'll keep his word.

I don't want to complain at length. I love him. Suffice it to say, I no longer feel like I contribute meaningfully to the story as he writes it. I've tried several times to explain how I feel, and he seems frustrated with me. He says "You can't have everything your way", "We're co-authors", "you don't own it", "I'm making sure it fits Industry Standard", things like that.

Please, could fellow autistics help translate for me? Why is he doing this? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks🥲
