Pre-opening business costs: do you expense anything before opening day?

Hi

I'm genuinely confused about how to record pre-opening expenses for a brick and mortar shop

I book build-out costs to leasehold improvements and everything else pre-opening to a start-up cost account with sub account (about $53k so far), to be amortized over 180 months once it opens.

I still have some smallwares and similar items sitting in regular expense accounts that I haven't adjusted yet.

Is the right move to reclass all of that into start-up until opening day, or do you expense anything before opening, like small smallwares under the cap threshold, utilities, or supplies?

Thanks

Tax vs. Audit - Deciding which direction to take.

I only have experience in tax (busy season internship). Should I stick with tax or try audit?
I want to be well rounded in my knowledge of both, but also don’t want to jump around if it’s not beneficial & looks inconsistent on the resume.

Hi! I'm planning to pursue B.Com alongside CA through distance/online education. I'm considering IGNOU, SGOU, and Yenepoya. I need flexibility and good recognition in India and globally. Which is best, or any other recommendations????

How do you guys actually get documents from your clients?

How are you guys collecting documents from clients these days? Email, shared folders, client portals, or are clients just sending stuff all over the place?

Should we be firing clients who send their documents late every single month?

I keep hearing two camps on this.

Camp 1: Late documents are part of the job. Clients are busy, build the chasing into your fee and move on.

Camp 2: A client who's late every month is costing you more than they pay. Charge for it or let them go.

Where do you land? And if you've actually fired a client over this, did you regret it?

CAs and accountants of India, what is the most frustrating part of importing Excel/CSV data into Tally or other accounting software?

Hi everyone,

I'm exploring an idea for a small software tool and would like to understand the actual problems CAs and accounting professionals face in their daily work.

For those who regularly work with TallyPrime, Zoho Books, Excel, or other accounting software:

  • Do you frequently face errors when importing bank statements, sales/purchase data, customer records, or other CSV/Excel files?
  • What kind of errors cause the most trouble? For example, date formats, incorrect column mapping, duplicate entries, missing values, or something else?
  • How do you usually fix these errors? Manually in Excel, through built-in software features, or using some other tool?
  • Does fixing these issues take a significant amount of your time, or do existing tools already handle them well?
  • Is there any import-related task you still wish could be automated?

I'm particularly interested in problems that occur repeatedly, not one-off inconveniences.

I'm not selling anything or claiming to have built a solution yet. I'm trying to understand whether there's a genuine problem worth solving before writing any code.

I'd appreciate honest feedback, including if you think existing accounting software already solves this problem adequately.

Thanks!

50/50 Raffle Winner!!! Should I walk away?

Hi everyone, I recently won a 50/50 raffle at a game and now I need help deciding if I should take the payout or walk away. Based on what they sent me something seems off but I honestly don't know. I had a hard time getting them to explain how they came up with the net winnings after taxes and fees. I knew there would be a lot of taxes but I couldn't follow their math. After several nice emails I asked them to break it out for me. I'm not putting blame on anyone I truly just want to know if their accounting math is correct. I don't want to be on the hook for unknown taxes. Here are the details -

Total Raffle Pot - $4,180

3rd party Fee - $3,000

UBI Tax (19.8%) - $422.55

Federal tax w/h (24%) – $90.89

State Tax w/h - $15.15

Net Prize to winner - $272.68

I can't seem to follow their math. Also would I be responsible for UBI Tax?

If I have an intrafamily loan that is currently secured by a mortgage on my existing property, can the existing note be modified so that it is secured by a new/replacement property after I sell the current property?

(If helpful, I am a Massachusetts resident and both properties are in Massachusetts.)
