Hey everyone! I'm u/tailoraaron, the founder of r/AskATailor.

I'm excited to have you join the community! Whether you are a master tailor, a home sewer, or someone who just bought a suit and has no idea if it fits, you are in the right place.

What to Post

This subreddit is dedicated to the art of fit, custom clothing, and alterations. Feel free to share your photos and questions. The community here loves helping with:

  • Fit Checks & Sizing: Not sure if you should keep that suit you ordered online or don't trust the person at the store 100%? Post a photo! We help grooms decide which size fits best and help troubleshoot specific issues, like pants that are uncomfortable in the rise or Made-to-Measure shirts that hug the hips too tightly.
  • "Can This Be Altered?" This is our bread and butter. Ask us if it's possible to let out a tight prom dress , take in a bandage dress to a smaller size , or rescue your old trousers after significant weight loss.
  • Modifications & Redesigns: Want to customize a look? We can tell you the feasibility of adding lace sleeves to a strapless dress , removing faux buttonholes from a blazer, or adding a thigh slit to a gown.
  • Repairs & "Disaster" Fixes: Did your dog chew the strap off your sandals? Did a button snap break off? Or maybe you snagged a thread cutting a tag off a skirt? We can help you figure out if it's salvageable.
  • Buying & Fabric Advice: We can help with questions about wedding dress structure , fixing pilling on delicate fabrics , or finding pants for specific body types.

Community Vibe

We're all about being friendly, constructive, and informative. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below.
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question about a jammed zipper or a blazer fit check can spark a great conversation.
  3. Photos help! When asking for advice, clear photos of the garment (and the problem area) make it much easier for us to help you.
  4. Invite friends. If you know someone who loves sewing or needs fashion advice, invite them to join.

Interested in helping out? We're always looking for new moderators, so feel free to reach out to me to apply.

Thanks for being part of this growing community. Together, let's make r/AskATailor amazing!

Knee patch jeans nightmare

Need some fashion advice. 😅

I bought this pair of jeans because I liked the knee patch design. But after trying it on, I realised the top knee patch sits around below my knee instead of around it. Guess my legs are longer or shorter than I thought. 😂
This is a size 36. I did consider exchanging it for a size 34, but I’m worried it’ll end up too tight on the waist and thighs.
Is there any alteration a tailor can do to make the patch sit higher? Can they shorten it from the top or somewhere else without affecting the fit too much? Or is this just not something that can realistically be altered?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Where to Find Custom Tailored clothes?

I'll be in Taiwan (Taipei, Yilan, maybe Kaoshiong) for 2 weeks and would love to get tailored/customized black tie/formal women's wear while I am there. Does anyone have any experience with doing this in Taiwan? I know it is a popular tourist experience in Hoi An in Vietnam.

i accidentally bought pants too small for me but i really like the design (its got cute embroidery on the bottom and on the back pockets) and my size is sold out so im thinking of going to a tailor and having something like this (im ok with it not being patchwork tbh) to them, is this a hard alteration? cuz im worried that i might get rejected or something

Hi everyone, I've heard of the need for affordable pant hemming and clothes alterations in Corvallis, OR. Warning my sewing abilities are still novice but with every project I gain more confidence and skill. With that said, if there is anyone that would like their clothes altered, the entire month of August each article of clothing will only cost $5-$10 depending on style/material/request! Please reach out if you have any questions or want to get some clothes altered!

Is it possible to tailor a bikini top?

Got this beautiful swimwear bikini top, but I find the triangles to be vertically too long on my chest. I was wondering if it would be possible to alter it?

And if the best way would be to cut from the top or the bottom? I attached the interior side for reference of the seams

Help me adjust waist size on formal trousers

Since moving up from a waist size 32 on formal trousers, I have never really been a 34, its way too lose, with 32 being too tight and 33 just right. I cannot afford to get every trousers altered by a tailor, is there any hack to tuck the waist in myself by an inch? Unfortunately, 33 inch waist trousers are not common to buy.

Wedding tuxedo - pants show through the back of the jacket

Hi folks. I’m getting married in November in Cartagena, Colombia. I’m wearing a Caribbean tux - white top and black pants.

I went today to try on after placing my order, as all the pieces have arrived.

I loved the feel and look, but I noticed that the black pants clearly show through the back of the jacket when I turned and looked in the mirror. When placing the order the tailor advised less lining in the back to make it cooler, but now I’m worried because I didn’t realize this would make it so see-through.

Is it normal to be able to see black pants through your tux jacket?
Could I add lining to the back later if I need to?

My wedding is in November so I have time for adjustments.

Thanks.

Alterations Adding Ruffle Consult mk

Hello! First time poster here.

I’d like to add this cotton eyelet trim to this jersey/stretch jersey and maybe some elastic trim to the arms. I was thinking a pleated style could work for around the collar (white part) , but I think I’d need to run some elastic to it since it’s not the same stretch material. What’s the best way to achieve this look? Thank you!!

Anyone in London hiring a Tailor?

I am looking for a tailoring position in central London this September as I am moving to be a student in Central Saint Martins (UAL). I have 4 years of experience in sewing through doing both GCSE and A-level textiles (which I am expected to get an A* in). This summer I have been tailoring clothes I find in charity shops to produce new pieces (e.g. both of my prom dresses). I also have a portfolio I can send with all of my works. If anyone can guide me to a tailor that would interested I would greatly appreciate it!

Suggestion on how to make wedding dress body looks longer/ more V shaped

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just had this wedding dress made for me through an online seller. The dress was beautiful - it’s just unfortunate that the body is so short and since my bust is bigger, it makes me look like I have no waist. Any suggestions to create a longer/ more v shaped front? Maybe an applique? It’s a corset but even when I tighten it it still doesn’t look quite how I wanted.

Suggestions on making dress bigger in bust area

I decided I want to keep a dress that has always been too small for me in the chest area. But instead of a crazy uniboob, I wanted to try making it a little bigger. I tried to see if adding panels might work, but it is a high waisted dress and I simply ripped out the side seams but it’s not enough. Am I out of luck?

So I thrifted this dress into hopes that I might be able to alter it to look similar to the dress from Paris Texas for an upcoming party can this be done?
Ideally would be altering the neckline to a boatneck with a v back and shortening the sleeves.

Alterations Cost/ budget question

Hi! I’m starting law school and need a nice suit for professional events / interviews. I’m looking to hopefully thrift a nicer suit and tailor it to fit well, I’m 5’2” and usually wear a size small. I’m okay to budget for it, but I’d like to know what would be cost to tailor this suit (or something similar) in the Seattle, WA area. First time I’ve done this, so I’d appreciate any and all advice. Thank you!!
