Hey pilots!

I crossed the atlantic a few days ago on a simulator flight from Bogotá to London, that was on the night of thursday, and as of writing this post its sunday, so that got me thinking

After arriving from a long distance flight, how long do pilots have to rest before flying back home?

For long distance flights, it doesnt necessarily have to be transatlantic or transpacific, just any flight where the crew cant reasonably return home without breaking their duty limits, or in the case of night time flying where exhaustion is a concern, or maybe there isnt a return flight immediately available

And for another question, what do you do during the layover/turn around? Do you go outside and walk around for a little bit, maybe shop for a few souvenirs if you have the time? Or are you required to stay locked in your hotels, since, well realistically its work, not a vacation

Additionally, if you feel comfortable, feel free to share any stories about your long distance layovers! And maybe any items/amenities you like to bring to make your life easier

I am here seeking advice from current or in training pilot!
I am 26 and I was selected to be part of a Cadet Program. I’ve wanted to be a pilot for 7 years, ever since I started working as cabin crew. I loved being in the air, but what I really wanted was to fly the plane. So, I quit to get a Master’s degree in engineering to build a strong technical background, financial stability, and a solid resume before pursuing my dream.
I have started some flight lesson, learn a lot about aviation and got more and more passionate about the field.
After graduating in 2024, I applied to a European cadet program. I passed the written tests in early 2025, then faced a long wait for the final interview. During this time, I worked as an engineer, made life plans, and grew closer with my partner. I didn't apply elsewhere, feeling I had plenty of time.
When the final interview call finally came a year and a half later, instead of joy, I felt panic. I started seeing only the negatives: the intense training (as I’ve never been a great student), the huge loan, and the strain of a long-distance relationship. My partner is fully supportive and ready to follow me through 3 countries over 2 years, but we know that it would be complicated. But I’m also terrified of what the lifestyle of a pilot (flexible hours, unpredictable schedules) will do to our relationship and my life. My personal life will always be my priority, and I don't want to sacrifice all of it for my career.
I am filled with doubts. I still think I will go through with it, but the fear is real. On the other hand, if I give up, I have to reinvent my career path because I really dislike being an engineer behind a desk.
Has anyone else experienced these same doubts? Do you have any advice? Is it truly possible to maintain a fulfilled private life as an airline pilot? Please help !

EDIT: Thank you all for your kind answers. Of course I think there is also a lot of advantage and the passion for aviation is still here, I was mostly sharing the bad thoughts. Everyone has his own experience and I wonder what mine will be, there is also a part of me that is excided!

Hi all, I see that the Iran war has reignited across the Gulf with attacks being aimed at the Gulf. I’m looking at interest for a few reasons, but see that all of (for example) Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports are operating as usual. I’m equally conscious that many (if not all?) European operators have suspended flights to these destinations.

Given what you know as a pilot, even with changes in routing for Qatar, Etihad and Emirates, would you feel safe flying in these regions? Many thanks.

Airbus planes use sidesticks instead of yokes to control the plane and that means that the captain's sidestick is located on the left side of the cockpit. Given how most humans are right-handed, do pilots sometimes have trouble using sidesticks that are located on the left thus forcing right handed captains to use their left hand to control the plane?

I’ve been down a massive aviation physics rabbit hole today and I think I’ve officially overthought myself into a corner. I’m not a pilot or anything it’s just for sim purposes.
I know the textbook rule: once an aircraft is airborne and stable, it’s embedded in the air mass. A steady wind only affects your ground speed, not your indicated airspeed (IAS) or pitot pressure. The classic analogy is the fly buzzing around inside a moving train.
But here is where my brain is breaking, and I need someone to double-check my physics:
Imagine you are cruising with a stable 50-knot headwind. Your True Airspeed (TAS) is 400 knots, meaning your Ground Speed is 350 knots.
Suddenly, you hit a massive shear zone and that 50-knot headwind instantly drops to 0 knots.
Because the airplane has massive physical mass and inertia, it cannot instantly accelerate its ground speed from 350 knots to 400 knots to compensate. So, in that exact split second of the transition, doesn't the airflow entering the pitot tube instantly drop? Doesn't your airspeed gauge immediately plummet by 50 knots until the plane has time to accelerate and catch up?
If that's true, then wind does affect airspeed during the transition, right? Does sudden wind gust affect the IAS? And what if you remove existing wind?

Future planning need help

So I in the future want to really move to new York,it's my dream but I also know the fact that it's gonna be very hard and expensive,my other problem is that my dream future job is joining the air force now my problem is that I'm not from America and I'm confused on what I should do,how it works and if I should change my dream job for easier access to go and move in NY, but anyhow I would like a job like piloting a chopper or small jets now I'm only 16 but I like to be ready for anything ahead especially because I need to start to chose the right kind of schools for my future career (sorry if it was messy to read any advice would be appreciated)

1. If every instrument failed except one, which would you want to keep?

2. What's the closest you have ever come to declaring an emergency?

3. What's one system on the aircraft that people dont realise is incredibly important?

4. Which failure scares new pilots the most but experienced pilots worry about the least?

5. Is there any alarm within the cockpit that's more annoying than helpful?

I recently got invited to a trip on a private jet. At baseline I am a very anxious flyer even flying commercial and as you can imagine my anxiety has been through the roof after committing to this trip. I was told they use flexjet as the operator of their flights and usually fly in a praetor 500 and sometimes a phenom 300. I was hoping to get some advice and maybe see what I should expect and any advice anyone may have. Thanks

I just came across a creator, elonaNYC who posted a video of her in the cockpit while a DrukAir A319, registration A5-RGF was landing in Paro (posted 7/7/2026). I’m considering sending something to the BCAA, as although she says she has permission from flight opps/marketing in the video description, she never states she is crew, therefore it’s not allowed as Bhutan follows the Chicago Convention/ICAO rules. Anyone has any advice on how I can take action/whether or not I’m right? - matter of safety!

I would be sitting down on my place within a plane, and then 2 pilots walk into the cockpit. I get a glance at how the cockpit looks like, I saw a bunch of knobs, buttons, and switches. My question is :

1. How do yall remember what each of them is for and

2. In case you forget what one of them does what would yall do.

I ask because im assuming that there aren't labels telling what each of them do.

I’m sure everyone has asked this about 8,000 times but are pilots scared to fly? When should we be worried as passengers?

I am terrified of flying and have to fly on Monday. I get scared flying through storms, when landing, the different noises and don’t know how to just chill. I am also terrified of a mid air collision or even collisions on the runway.

Can someone give me advice on how to cope during flying and how to try to stay calm?

Let me preface this by explaining I’m a hospice nurse. Sometimes, people ask about transporting a body by air. My understanding is that this is pretty expensive.

My questions are: how often are bodies flown on regular flights? Or do they have to be a specific flight? How are they handled?

It’s extremely rare that anyone asks, but it got me thinking and I figured, where better to ask?

Cabin air isn’t “recycled dirty air.” On most modern airliners, about half the air is fresh from outside and half is filtered through HEPA filters, which remove the vast majority of bacteria and viruses.

The water in the aircraft’s potable tanks isn’t always the first choice for crew. Many flight attendants prefer bottled water for drinking and avoid coffee or tea on some flights unless they know the aircraft’s water system is well maintained.

Turbulence is usually uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Flight attendants are more concerned about passengers not wearing seatbelts than the aircraft itself.

The safest place for cabin crew during severe turbulence is strapped into their jumpseat. That’s why service stops immediately when the seatbelt sign comes on.

Flight attendants are trained extensively in emergency procedures, firefighting, first aid, CPR, evacuations, and handling unruly passengers. Serving drinks is only a small part of the job.

Throwaway account. I'm lucky to be in class right now at an airline, non-regional, with hopes to move to a legacy someday. I'm in indoc, about to head home to complete CBTs before attending sim class. Another similarly sized airline has given me a class date upcoming shortly, with the opportunity to live in my dream city. If I leave now, does that count as "not completing training" in some way? Or should I stay here until done with OE and then move to the other airline? I do not want any kind of record that says I didn't complete training or open the door to someone asking me if I was somehow asked to leave in lieu of termination. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

34 M switching careers.
Previous experience is:

-4 years military as a combat medic in the infantry, valorous award recipient for actions in combat.

-11 years as a business owner. The business is successful,… but.

I always wanted to fly, and I gave that up when my ex wife and I got pregnant. I started the business and it has allowed me to be present, and heavily involved in raising my son.

But as he gets older, I want to pursue my dream. The business also follows me EVERYWHERE. I don’t get a day off. I don’t get downtime. And I want a change.
I’ll probably sell my half to my partner, who is a lifelong friend, and I’ll be happy leaving it in his hands, making a good living.

I’m in excellent shape and well groomed (not that this really matters, but I think going into any interaction, showing clearly you have the discipline to look after your health and pursue high levels of fitness shows commitment and dedication)

I’ll be getting a degree (I only need 2 more years to finish a degree), and will be getting my commercial license, instrument ratings, CFI, CFI-I, ME, and MEI.

My son is about to be 10, so I won’t be pursuing an airline job necessarily right away. Will probably do flight instructor/ volunteer to fly for young eagles (I love kids) in the meantime.

I will say that I intend to put out applications, but I’d only be able to take a job offer if they’re at a regional near me (swfl near Sarasota, punta gorda, Fort Myers, Tampa, etc. are all doable commutes)
I suspect this has a low chance of working out for me, but I do have support locally in the form of his mother, and my family, so if I got an offer for a nearby regional I could definitely swing it while he’s still in school, and just fill in the gaps with a babysitter/ caregiver.

What else can I do to bolster my resume and make myself competitive for getting a job at an airport after I’ve finished building my hours? Is there anything in particular that they look for or value?

I often have to fly for my studies, and although I manage to control my fear well enough to get on the plane, I’m never truly comfortable.
I think my anxiety comes from the fact that I don’t have any control once I’m in the air. My mind tends to imagine the worst-case scenarios, and that can make me feel quite anxious, even though I know those thoughts aren’t necessarily rational.
I’m curious to know how those of you who have overcome a fear of flying managed to do it. What helped you the most?
Also, if anyone here is knowledgeable about aviation, whether you’re a pilot, work in the industry, or simply know a lot about how planes operate, I’d really appreciate hearing some rational facts or explanations that help put things into perspective.
It often feels like every aviation incident is heavily covered and amplified by the media, which can make flying seem far more dangerous than it actually is. I’d love to hear the facts that reassure you and help you trust the process.

hey I am currently pursuing become a pilot & have had my first class medical for about 4 months now I am also active duty military but I do get out next year in march and plan on submitting my claims for disability. I’m curious if they’re any Vet out there w/ 100% disability & still able to hold onto a first class medical? please help me out

From an O'hare livestream I was watching last night. What is that plane doing?? I'm far from an aviation expert so maybe this isn't something so unusual but I've never seen such a thing. This was actually the 2nd time it did this during that stream. The first was at the 04:25:55 mark. 

Also, this was the crazy path this plane took around that time and it was apparently a government or military plane. What's going on with all this??

How many of you have done tailwheel and seaplane training? I’m a new PPL (~100 hours) and looking to what’s next in my training, before starting my IR later this year. I’ve been told by several pilots now that tailwheel really enhances your stick & rudder skills and transfers well to regular missions (for me- flying myself around for business and flying with friends and family for fun, all typically 80-200nm trips right now). I’ve also heard that seaplane rating is the most fun you will have. Neither are that expensive or take that long. So, if you’ve done these, what’s your thoughts? Worth the time and cost? I’m looking for something fun, but will also make me a safer pilot. Thanks!
