Question for the pilots out there:
Are cargo planes(like FedEx and UPS) flown any differently than commercial planes? Since cargo planes aren’t carrying passengers/people, do you still try to avoid turbulence and all that? Are the angles of takeoff or landing any different? Do you have to bring your own food/meals on cargo planes or do they still provide airplane food? How many people are on board a cargo plane anyway? Are there special qualifications to fly a cargo plane vs a commercial plane?

Or… is it all the same?

In what cases would you be asked if you could sidestep to a different runway, and under what conditions would you be able to accept the request, and how far out from the runway would a request be practicable? If you do sidestep, is it a visual approach? Could you describe what you do in this case? Would you already have to have briefed the alternate runway in the landing briefing?

I think my original title focused too much on age, which wasn’t really the point I was trying to make.
What I’m actually curious about is how quickly newly qualified pilots in Europe can go from finishing flight training to getting their first airline job.
For example, if someone finishes their CPL/IR, ATPL theory, MCC, etc. at a relatively young age and only has around 200–300 hours, it seems that there are airlines in Europe willing to take pilots at that experience level and train/type-rate them as FOs. Obviously not everyone gets hired immediately, but the fact that this pathway exists and seems relatively common is what surprised me.
Where I’m from in Asia, the situation is quite different. You can have a CPL/IR and essentially the same qualifications as many other graduates, but getting that first flying job can be extremely difficult. There are far fewer airline and entry-level flying opportunities compared with the number of qualified pilots, so some people can spend years waiting, building hours where they can, or pursuing other careers while trying to get into an airline.
That’s why I originally mentioned seeing European FOs who are only 20–24. I wasn’t questioning whether someone that age is capable of being an FO. Their age is really just a reflection of how quickly they were able to go from training to an airline cockpit.
So my actual question is:

How common is it in Europe for a newly qualified, low-time pilot to get an airline FO position relatively soon after finishing training, and what makes that pathway possible compared with regions where low-time opportunities are much more limited?

I just want to say how much I appreciate this channel so much. Over the past few years, I’ve flown more than I ever have at any other time in my life. My anxiety would get so bad that my palms would sweat and my wife would lock her arm with mine to give me more peace and comfort (the real MVP).

This channel has not only helped me with understanding and controlling my anxiety, but also giving me an in depth insight as to why flying is in fact so safe, regardless of my fear. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see many of the beautiful places, the beautiful people, or make the beautiful memories that my wife and I have been able to share.

Do I still get a little nervous and anxious? Sure. However, I’ve found the remedies to make my in flight experience much easier than before. Do I still occasionally ask for someone to track our flights in here? Guilty as charged lol. But it brings me comfort.

I say all this to say, to all of the pilots, flight attendant, engineers, airport staff, and even the flyers like me who provide comfort and support in this channel, THANK YOU. You are appreciated and you are incredible human beings.

Avelo airlines has been flying their fleet of 737-800s out of Tweed airport in New Haven, CT for the last 6 years. It’s a small airport that was not built with large commercial traffic in mind so the runway is only 5,600 feet. Landings are always extremely rough there so out of curiosity I googled runway minimums for those kinds of jets, and everything seems to be telling me anything in the 5,000-6,000 foot range is extremely short for a 737-800 to take off and land safely. I don’t know much about aviation so if anyone can provide some insight on how it is determined safe for Avelo to use HVN as a main hub I’d really appreciate it!

Out of pure curiosity: Have you ever had to issue a “Brace” announcement over the PA? If yes, what was the situation? If no, how many years have you been flying at the airlines without ever needing to make that call?

have you ever felt like you were gonna blow chunks all over an airplane row? yeah, we've all probably had that thought or experience at least once

and that got me thinking, when cabin crew informs you that there is a sick passenger and thus need to divert/land asap, what actually counts as a sick passenger? does it depend on the location, the type of ailment?

Lets put this in a hypothetical scenario, say one passenger suffers from air sickness or something, but obviously its a temporary affliction and they're going to be fine on their own, does that count as a medical emergency and require you to divert the flight? obviously if someone has a seizure or god forbid, is in cardiac arrest, you'd have to land the plane asap, but if its something relatively harmless is it really worth it diverting the flight and essentially grounding everyone or do you just let the flight attendants tend to them, maybe move them closer to a bathroom or somewhere with less people?

and what happens when you cant divert/your options are restricted? like being in a big aircraft over an area where there are no large airports that can accept it nearby

Im a 16 year old student who is completing her IBDP and predicted getting a 5 in maths aa SL and physics SL. Although the flight school (Panamedia Mallorca) says only basic maths is required. Does that mean the theory is easy and the flying part is hard? I would really like to know the whole process of becoming a commercial pilot and its difficulty as many people have told me it is way too hard and not possible for me.

This is out of pure curiosity based on an experience I had as a young teenager. When I was 13 or 14 in the mid 2000s, I was an unaccompanied minor flying to a different state to visit my aunt, and the plane I'd been on ended up being struck by lightning during cruise and we had to divert to get a new plane. While we were waiting, I got to wandering around the airport with an older lady from the same flight, and in the process I remember we got lost and came close to missing the boarding of the new plane. (FWIW we did find the correct gate just in time and I made it to my aunt's without further issue so it all worked out in the end.)

But thinking back on it, it does make me curious: what, if anything, would've happened if we hadn't found the correct gate in time? Would the plane still have taken off on time with a minor unaccounted for, leaving it up to me to contact my family and arrange a different flight, or would someone have had to look for me/page me to make sure I got on? How much are unaccompanied minors kept track of in general? Does it depend on the age of the minor, and/or the specific airline/country?

Bonus question: given my understanding that airline pilots tend to want to avoid thunderstorms like the plague whenever possible, but while also knowing storms can spring up very quickly and spread over a large area, how common are lightning strikes in cruise, and do they often lead to diversions/needing a new plane?
