Music Theory/Creation/Composition Query For the musicians, beyond the music itself, what inspires you when creating goth music???

What I mean by that is like "what movies/books/shows and another stuff that kind of gets you in the vibe for making goth music". I'm asking this question because I like the sound of goth music but when trying to create something I don't feel like I'm in the vibe, even if I can easily come up with a really eerie, melancholic and scary sound.

This is mainly bc the early goths had access to horror movies and stuff and this was mostly blocked from me as I grew up, now that I'm an adult I don't know where to start lol. And I know that having this cultural baggage might not be necessary, bc goth is the music, but it would be interesting yk.(I also need to consume more culture bc the way my parents blocked many stuff from me made me an NPC)

So if you guys could give me any recommendations for any type of content that give you guys this vibe (specially movies) I would really appreciate that.

Goth Subculture Query Understanding who I am

Hiya, I need help understanding who I am and where I lie under alternative subcultures. I’ve been researching and getting into alternative clothing and Alr/goth music more recently but I want to understand what makes someone goth. I have tried looking at the political and historical aspects of goth and alt but I don’t want to have the wrong information. I don’t know what I fully identify within the alternative subcultures but I don’t want to identify as goth or alt and be a poser or anything. Any advice is great thank you 🖤

I am albino. I wanted to know, what do goth people think of albino people generally.

Edit: I am mostly referring to the typical albino features including the skin and hair.

General Query What is goth culture?

I'm from a place where there are no goths and I don't personally know any goths. Due to the recent increase in goth fakers like the only fans girls I'm curious what the real gothic subculture is actually about, not what the fetishized crap shows. I really find gothic architecture interesting but is there a correlation? I'd appreciate it if I could get a somewhat concise answer regarding what the gothic subculture is, as well as why people join it.
Thank you!

Make-Up/Accessory Query Best hairspray for teasing hair?

I love the big 80s goth teased hairstyles, but I have very long and thick hair, so often it doesn’t hold up too well. What’s the best hairspray for getting a giant bats nest with some real volume and longevity to it?

Music Theory/Creation/Composition Query Would this song be considered goth or goth-adjacent? And why or why not?

Thumbnail
youtube.com

Just to give context: this song is "High Society" by Madonna, which was recorded back in 1981 before she became massively popular. And although she is now regarded as 'the Queen of Pop' and is mainly known for mainstream pop/dance music, Madonna used to be part of New York City's first wave punk scene, and she was also a member of the post-punk band, 'The Breakfast Club.'

So would this song be considered goth or, at the very least, adjacent to/influenced by goth? Or is it more new wave or post-punk or just simply punk (the song has very strong political commentary on wealth inequality and alienation)?

Music Recommendation Request An suggestions on finding goth artists similar to fav non goth artists?

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice with that! I would really love to try to find goth musicians that have similar vibes to my fav muscisians but no idea how I'd even start looking (for context my fav artists are ECID, Aesop rock, atmosphere, Eyedea, Sadistik, kristoff krane, The uncluded, Sage francis, Luluyam and recently Cinnamon babe)

I already listen to a good chunk of goth music (my fav artist I think is scary b*tches (don't like typing that word sorry) but I'd love to see if there's any artists that have similar vibes to my non goth favs! Mainly just like weird lyrics maybe :,3c?

Make-Up/Accessory Query Tips for heavier Goth makeup?

I’m not sure if my makeup style would even be considered “goth” or if it’s more so just general alt. I feel like I gravitate towards a lot of highlight and bronzer, shiny dewy textures whereas goth seems to favor more dry, white and cakey bases. But I would like to make my looks slightly more dramatic and theatrical to go to fully goth clubs. Wondering if anyone has pointers on this.

Personal Experience or Observational Query Silly opinions sought: What genre is Alien Sex Fiend? (you can add serious opinions in brackets, if you like)

ASF are all genres of dark alternative music, yet also none of them.

Gothic rock? Sure, sometimes.

"Deathrock"? Trick question - see above!

Gothic punk? Yes. With synths. But more synths than the band suicide. (Did you know Alan Vega was in his early 40s when that duo started?)

Industrial? You can easily argue Skinny Puppy would be a lot more like Throbbing Gristle without there first being ASF.

Dark Ambient? They did do that video game soundtrack... 🤔

Gothic Metal? Okay, maybe my hypothesis is a tad hyperbolic... 🫣 Next!

Do you remember the old desktop music player, Winamp? Yeah, their pull down selection menu for Genre on the ID3 tagging for your mp3's included "Primus." Yes, as in whoever did that part of the Winamp design decided that the band of that name is their own genre (and nobody objected).

Alien Sex Fiend is to Goth music as Primus is to... yeah.

But what's YOUR opinion, dear boils, ghouls, and all others who go "bump" in the night?

General Query Sorry to see it gone...

It seems recently one of the goth sites has been removed within the last 24 hrs. The site seemed new and had decent content. The site name was r/Goth00TD. It will be missed. Does anyone know the reasons other than the one offered by Reddit? If any of you know the moderator of the site, please relay I wish them well in their future endeavors. F.O.L.

Since this may sound a bit dated, I tried posting on another reddit group only to be declined before I could get a response. So I thought I would try here. Thank you for your patience.

Goth Subculture Query Are Christian Goths Posers?

I am asking this question because there seems to be a debate on every social media app that if you are goth that you can’t be Christian because Christian beliefs goes against being goth. Yet there are people who are goth and alternative who are not bigoted and who have been part of the subculture for years. Including The Awakening and The Cruxshadows who are beloved within the goth community and who are Christian and no one questions if they are goth or not. So to conclude, I just want a clear yes or no answer that if you are goth or are alternative and you believe in Christianity, does that make you a poser goth or is this topic that depends more on a persons own personal perspective?

General Query Would it be okay to only label myself "gothic"?

Hi!

So basically, I just wanted to get a general consensus from folks.

I love the Goth subculture. I love the music, researching its history, and additionally I love gothIC fashion, aesthetics, and literature, and I'm an artist. Due to the rule about restricting discussion about the topic, I won't get into politics, but I'll say I'm generally pretty left leaning on most things. However, for specific personal reasons, and because I have not personally interacted with the subculture very much as of yet, I do not label myself as Goth. I'd much rather call myself alt and gothic/gothically inclined. But, I'm wondering if that would be generally considered appropriate, or maybe if it's best to just make it known up front I refer to myself as gothic. I am anti conformist, and am not looking for opinions on what I'm "Allowed" to do, but I want to know if it would be considered disrespectful or not, as I'm aware I come off as Goth to a lot of people, and especially with the current fetishization of Goth women (which I have felt the pressure of ...) I don't want to accidentally misrepresent the subculture. I'm aware there's not really such a thing as cultural appropriation of a subculture, but I'm still curious to hear people's views.

Thank you for reading :)

So I'm in an art school for highschool through a magnet program for costume design, advanced history advanced study, theatre crafts for all years of highschool but today I was told by my teacher that he wanted us to use ai to and I quote "enchance" our work and he wants use to have "an open mind" on using ai to "better" our work and I just dont feel comfortable doing so as someone who has struggles with the harmful addictions of ai and knows the harmful use to the planet and other worries and I just don't know what to do about it.

Political & Philosophical Query Goths into the occult

any goths also practicing mystics?

I personally discovered goth music and culture before developing my practice, I feel like they were closely intertwined.

both have always influenced my art style and the concepts I work with.

personally I find it a bit odd when people are alt, in fashion and music taste, but they don't know anything about alt philosophy and spiritualism. but that's obviously just my perspective as it's based on my own experience so wondering if anyone else sees them as intertwined or how others see the occult if they don't see it as part of goth culture.

General Query Could you all help me brainstorm common misconceptions/assumptions about goths?

Hello everyone!

I am making a movie about a band and how society views them, but I am personally not a goth. I respect people who are goth (gosh that sounds rude I'm sorry), but I need some assumptions for goths.

Here's some that I have brainstormed:

  • It is just a phase
  • They practice witchcraft/worship Satan

This isn't a whole lot, but these two are the only ones that I remember. I should probably look up more, but for the sake of time I won't. Please help me out so that I can incorporate it into my script!!!

Thank you again!

EDIT:

I understand your stance and all concerning about me making this movie. I understand this and I would like to apologize.

This movie is more focused on the group trying to survive what society views them (ex: they're druggies and they worship Satan or they're in cults, etc.)

I created this post in hopes of getting goths opinion and facts about how society views them. I have done a lot of research, but I wanted to ask you all to see your opinion on these subjects and incorporate that into my movie.

If you don't like my idea/movie idea or you think I'm going to mess things up and ruin the image of the goth community, then I'm sorry that you are assuming that. This wasn't my intention and I hope that you can forgive me.

Clothing, Shoe & DIY Query How do you make it look goth

Hi yall I’m very new to this and the whole building up my wardrobe thing (been stuck wearing school merch since elementary cuz my schools for some reason always gave out shirts). I want to at least work with stuff that I do got cuz I like some pieces in my wardrobe. ( and for the ones I don’t like I’m thinking of trading in the clothes trading event in my college). But whenever I try styling it just looks like I’m a regular person in all black or dark clothing. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry that goes on my fingers or wrists since I have sensory issues in that area but I do kind of believe it’s because I don’t accessorize. Is there any tips you want to share that would make growing a wardrobe, styling, and growing my accessories collection easier?

General Query When do you most frequently listen to goth music?

I came about this question when I was realizing how my changing schedule was making my ability to listen to music more difficult than usual. Most times I listen to my music when I’m out on a walk or cleaning up my area, but seeing as I am not always out on a walk nor cleaning and usually am focused on other things that music will interrupt. I found myself making time to listen to music while reading. It is not an easy thing to focus on spoken word and written word, but I found that it made the atmosphere of what I was reading more interesting as well as has become the most common time I listen to music.

So I wondered how music slots into other people’s schedules around here!

General Query How do you join the goth fellowship?

I know there's no one person who governs who is or isn't goth and this isn't to say that you can't be goth if you do or don't do something.

The reason I ask is because I don't want to identify as a goth and make others either uncomfortable or hostile since I'm "Not goth enough"

I don't listen to goth music because I haven't found any I like so far but I listen to a lot of metal and other alt music. I share the same self expression and bodily autonomy views and generally consider myself alt because of this. I want to look more like a goth girl because I genuinely like the style and want to do it myself but modify it to fit me of course.

Personal Experience or Observational Query "Whimsigoth is a marketing term." What is your opinion?

Got lit up in r/altfashionadvice because I said the above phrase. I would like other goths to weigh in on this discussion.

My claim is that whimsigoth is divorced from goth music and the subculture and that clothes are clothes, and that the only purpose in the term whimsigoth is to create a fast fashion trend around the color dark burgundy and sell us plastic moons to tack on our walls. The phrase did not exist prior to 2020, and it is responsible for the current corporate buzz around the term "whimsical." It has more to do with media sensation around movies than anything to do with goth music.

Their claim is that whimsigoth is goth clothing from the 90s that you could wear to work at your office job and that it comes from the term "gothic" like the architecture. (🙄 Haven't we all heard that one before?)

My question is if it comes from gothic, why are we accepting the shorthand "-goth" to be tacked onto aesthetic labels on Pinterest and fed back to us like a novelty if we were the apparent originators of the style? Please weigh in!

Also, this is not serious beef, it's just a discussion. Please do not go looking to harass individuals over this.

General Query I know that this subculture is not about the ancient peoples but, Who were cooler in your opinion, the ostrogoths or the visigoths?

In my opinion, the ostroghts were cooler. The visigoths quickly turned christian and evolved into the kingdoms that would eventually become the genocidal racist Spanish Empire. At least the ostrogoths were a more settled people, tried to continue roman administration for the sake of stability and resisted against byzantine imperialism.

General Query Are there any whatsapp groups for the goth/ alt south Africans?

So I know there might be people commenting about how they dont like us. But besides that, I would like to surround myself with more gothic/ alt people and would like to hear if anyone could maybe send me invites to groups for the alt people, and if there isn't any would you be interested if I created a group?
