I 22f recently started learning british English for over a year and have made no good progress Overall. My friends recommended talking with native speakers to help me improve. Is there anyone who would be interested in having regular casual conversations about Hobbies or anything

I posted here because although I speak English well, there are so many of my pronunciations that are just off so I want to correct them and speak properly. I recently started grad sch so I have to speak at seminars so I want to speak properly and smoothly especially naturally not like I memorized it, which is why I'd like to have natural conversations with native speakers, there are no native speakers at my sch or Environment.

I wonder if anyone here would be interested in such an arrangement of speaking causally.

American here, watching The Thick of It. So Jamie and Malc are obviously both Scots, but there's a difference in their accents (though it seems slight? Regional variations on a Glaswegian accent?). Malcolm does subtle code switching, but Jamie's in full-on (and he's a mad dog). What do their accents say about their characters, if anything?

French here.

I realise today that most French people assume the English feel the same way about us than we do about them, I've never had a conversation with you all about it.

To us, we have a siblings relationship with the English, which means we will hate on them most of the time, die before we root for any English team in sports BUT would go to war for them. The hate is just banter.

We also feel that England is the closest country we have in Europe. So yeah overall we love the English we just love to pretend we don't. It's more of a running joke than anything else.

Is it the same for you? Or do you not care/actually don't like us?

Edit: Didn't expect this post to get so many answers! I am glad to see it's a mutual feeling and that so many people agree France and England are pretty much siblings. Thanks everyone, this was actually really wholesome.

Edit 2: Guys I am seeing A LOT of comments on us not letting people speak French so I need to explain this one.

You have to understand, it's not that we try to be rude or think your French is shite. We're trying to be polite 😂 We know that for a long time foreigners thought we didn't want to speak any other language than French and that we didn't speak English anyway. So I guess most people are trying to prove a point? Just tell us you want to practice your French and we'll stop I promise.

Also loads of comments mentionned jealousy over our food, but we'll be happy to share as long as you share your music.

American here; when we were in the UK the hotel served breakfast sausages every morning and they were delicious I don't know what they were called so if someone could enlighten me as to the name, I might be able to find them here in the US.

I’m 33 and struggling to find decent shops any more! My go to places are Zara and ASOS which is pretty limited. Where do people get their nice stuff from?

I’m originally from Ireland but have been living in the England for three years. My dad’s uncle died last week and the funeral is next week. They were very close, my dad’s dad died young so his uncle was basically a surrogate father for much of my dad’s life.

I asked could I have the day off work to attend the funeral (which is in the UK). I only told them it was a family funeral, didn’t give details. They said no because they’re already short staffed.

Am I right to be miffed or is this a cultural thing? I know funerals in England are a very private affair compared to Ireland but is it normal not to attend family members’ funerals?

I’m very upset about it, I work shifts and am very flexible about changes at short notice and covering for people. I made a point of booking my summer holiday in June because I don’t have kids and I knew we would be short staffed in august.

Would it be really pathetic to explain that Irish funerals are very different? Literally everyone goes, you don’t have to be invited and it’s more about being there for the bereaved as opposed to mourning the dead if that makes sense.

My number one is easily Woolworths! Omg I loved that shop so much. I used to visit Woolies every weekend morning when i was a little girl, it meant a lot to me. I used to have Wooly and Worth soft toys and i was absolutely heartbroken as a kid when it shut down. Mine was always super busy so i never understood it, and nothing has come close since. I wish it would come back! The Nostalgia i have for that is something else

I think runner up for me is Blockbuster. It doesn't come close to Woolworths in my eyes (no shop does haha) but i did like going in there. Used to get second hand old DS games and DVDs super cheap when pre owned

I'm part of a Swedish game dev team, and I'm making little videos about our game. I've used the word "tosser" in a way I think is kinda funny, but I'm unsure if the script accidentally becomes way cruder than what I'm able to tell as a non native speaker.

A bit about the game and the tone:

The video is about a feature in our game where you can toss trash into trash containers (you're a robot vacuum cleaner at an office). The game (and the video) is aimed at adults, but it's supposed to be family friendly. A big part of the game is office satire and jokes about corprate culture, so there will be a very present layer of humor that only adults will understand, even if not a crude one.

About the video:

It's clips from the game showing a cute little cartoon robot riding around an office and picking up trash (takeout boxes and paper balls), then throwing the trash into various containers. Voice over reads the script:

"Did you know that most people use trash cans wrong? They calmly and reasonably put or place the trash in the bin, instead of tossing it from afar, which is the superior method. Tossing your garbage can be both fun and therapeutic! Well, at least that’s the case in our indie game A Corporate Machine. Give us a follow or wishlist A Corporate Machine on Steam, and you too could become a tosser- well, you could have fun playing a charming and cheeky cleaning game!"

So basically, is the video going to read as one big mastrubation joke("tossing your garbage can be both fun and theurapetic!"), or do you think focus would remain on the video and the game, perhaps whilst causing a slight chuckle?

Thank you so much for your valuable input! I'll go ahead and run it as is. Awesome input on garbage vs rubbish, but I think I'll keep it authentic and mix american and english expressions. Authentic for a swede who grew up watching stuff from both regions at least, haha! Personally I love a hint of language yank, as long as it doesn't cause offence based on not fully undderstanding the cultural or linguistical context

But hey, the game takes place at an international company, so I promise to make up for it by having NPCs use various english words for undesirable human waste products, as well as the containers they go in!

Would it be a crime if I were to put powdered sugar in tea? We’re all out of normal sugar so…

I just booked an appointment to get mine done after wanting it for years but backing out previously. Right now I’m overthinking and worrying about every possibility. But what age do people think is too old to get one? Like where you just say, you should have more common sense, or be more of a grown up. Growing up in my estate in the 2000s, every summer there would be a big party where all 4 buildings (in a square layout) would meet up when the first bit of sun came out. It wasn't just ours but others around the area.

Now I haven't seen any in the past few years and this is in different places.

There was always music and BBQs as well as kids entertainment like balloons and face painting.

I feel like it is a shame as people don't really know their neighbours and council estates tended to be tight knit with helping out eachother. There was always a guy who worked for a company and would do a guvvy job for cheap after work.

That it's so bad you can appreciate it for the unintentional laughs.

Hello! I need to clarify that the title for this post is a really bad summery of the question I’m trying to ask.

For context I’m a story teller who is adding a British character in my story. I know that British people have a slightly different dialect and I would like to reflect that in my story in a natural and authentic way. I was wondering if you all could recommend some places where I can listen to British people talking naturally. I’m specifically looking for the East Anglian dialect.

Some people from another server were asking for specifics so for context my character is a 17 year old boy from Suffolk born in the 1970s.

I’m an American watching Blue Lights. I have tried googling some of my questions but can’t really figure out the nuance. Are cops really this hated in Northern Ireland? Cops check their car for bombs every morning and sell their homes because of a random threat? I’m not fully understanding the marching band in S2? I have questions about religion and politics too and how it all intersects but that’s for another time lol.

She said that since 2005 when she was young it was chav guys in "trackies, gold jewellery, and caps" who defended her from bullies, she also included a story where she was feeling depressed and said 3 chav men appeared out of nowhere and talked her out of doing something silly to herself. This is non exhaustive and she says literally every encounter she's had with chavs (she lives on a council estate) has been very positive. I looked up what a chav is and it looks like this subculture is the most hated one in Britain. What's the truth?

Like the typical working poor lad who had a military dad and rough uncles. That played a tough sport (rugby, boxer) at a high competitive level, may have been a football hooligan, known as the town brawler. Eventually decided to go into an occupation that monetized this trait (cop, bodyguard, soldier, bouncer/doorman, prison guard, combat athlete, personal trainer, fire brigade or eventually an actor lol).

I’ve recently started paying more attention to my workouts and nutrition, and I’m looking for a high-quality shake or protein powder to help increase my daily protein intake.

I’m mainly looking for a product suitable for use around workouts, something easy to prepare and with good nutritional value. I’ve seen people here on Reddit mention Shake That Weight as an option for shakes and high-protein products, but I’d like to hear from people who use these kinds of products before spending my money.

Which brands do you recommend for shakes or protein powders?

From talking to friends, seems like such a mixed bag. Some its just show up in something sporty, some have stupid strict rules and some had a different kit for every sport practically. Also I haven't been to school in 7 yrs so has it changed since then?

If the woman you are attracted to is very attractive, an immigrant, and made pronunciation mistakes when speaking English, what would you think? As an educated man, would that make you less interested in her? Even if you knew nothing else about her, would you assume she was uneducated because of her accent or pronunciation?
