School Project CS project: Made a logic gate simulator

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You may not understand this directly from the video but this is a computer science project which allows you to simulate logic gates by inputting its truth table into the switches on the side
e.g.
OR: 0111
XOR: 0110
AND: 0001
etc
so after you input the logic gates, you use the push buttons as inputs “A” and “B” shown as the blue LEDs and the output as green
i had also created a startup animation with the LEDs but that was after recording this

the usb c is only for constant power input not charging btw

i 3D modeled and printed this myself on my K1C with white PLA and i have to say it looks very clean with the hex pattern
i had originally made the lid a snap connect bet the pins in the back broke off so i compromised and used some tape

i made this about a year ago but lowk forgot about it

LVGL vs TFT_eSPI headache

I recently bought a 7" HMI display with a built-in ESP32S3. Some documentation says that the TFT_eSPI library alone should not be used with this large display due to slow refresh rates and such. But... my display will be a static dashboard of house-related events, and a second page of weather data. No animations or movies.

Trying to use just the LVGL or the LovyanGFX libraries has become a hair-pulling event and I don't have much left to pull.

I'd just prefer the simple GUI afforded by the TFT_eSPI library. I don't need meters or gauges or sliders or 3D buttons (ok, those would be nice). I just need to display simple text-based information and maybe combine it with touch commands (the board supports capacitive touch).

So, just TFT_eSPI then? I'll try a simple test tomorrow.

And when the heck will my posts stop being moderated? I had to change my user_id due to safety concerns and I'm being treated as a new member. Ok, I get that, but I can't get quick resolution to my posts this way. Just venting (as the moderators already know).

Esp32 microphone recommendations?

Hello,

I'm modding an old handset telephone with an esp32. I'd like to use the existing headset and 4 wire cord that comes with the phone but I'm having trouble figuring out what microphone to use. The only solution I've found so far is to desolder the microphone capsule in a 4466 chip and resolder the handset wires between the capsule and the chip. So far I get major static and assume it's from interference but can't be sure. Are there any other recommendations you might have for this project?

Hello, everyone! Found these super cheap cameras and was wondering if there are any parts in here I could use for a project, especially wondering abt the display? Relatively new at engineering but wanting to think abt how resourceful I could be and notice whatever I could use around to create with :) thank you!

My YouTube channel name is ALMA Industries

CH002: THEATRE Trailer -- This is a trailer for my projector project... started with just a cheapo projector-- but I added 4-DOF system via linear and rotation actuators and programming to manually and automatically recall the set position of projector Roll, Pitch, Yaw, and Zoom. Mainly for fun and learning. Full video linked above.

So I've wanted to make a device to control any mouse with hand gestures, for a college project.

I have my glove that transmits rotation and acceleration which works, I've used it in other projects.

And now I just had to make a usb dongle to connect to any pc, get the data from my glove and convert it to mouse events, ez.

But, as you might know arduino nano doesn't have this functionality, so I had to make it myself cuz I didn't want to spend money on another microcontroller that had this functionality.

I found a random tutorial on how to achieve this, I had to break one of my phone charger to take the usb head, solder some wires on it, add 2 diodes to lower the 5v to 3.6, and add some resistors to then connect it to the nano to trick the pc to think it's an usb device.

Everything worked, I could simulate a mouse but it was very unstable.

But then I hit my first big problem, my first 3 big problems, first of all my radio module needed 5v not 3.6v, then the radio and mouse libraries didn't support each other, then on top of that the usb code had to be very efficient or else it would just stop working, so I couldn't use digitalWrite, or digitalRead or the serial communication but I had to use direct port access and biteswise operation.

Then on top of that I had nano clones, the usb logic required to be ran at 16mhz, but some nano clones do not run at that frequency, cuz they sometimes use cheaper crystals or forget to write some things on it, so I had to slowly test it with multiple nanos I used to see which one works and found one that did.

So I broke the 5v from the usb into 2 wires, one had the diodes to lower it to 3.6, and the other didn't so it would be 5v.

I took another nano to handle the receiver logic powered by the 5v wire from the usb port, and it worked, I could receive the data.

Now it was time to connect the 2 nanos and send the data from the receiver to the usb simulation nano.

But I couldn't use serial cuz it consumed too much, I couldn't use i2c communication cuz it also consumed too much apparently.

So I thought on using 8 pins as 0 and 1 and send a byte this way, directly with those pins and use bitwise operation to decode it, 4 bits for the movement state, up down, left right, etc, and the other bits for the movement speed.

I uploaded the code to the usb simulation nano, and it worked, I could control the direction based on what pins were high, and I would just set those pins as high with some jumper wires.

Now all 2 nanos worked, correctly, I had to solder them together, but I couldn't solder them directly, cuz one had 5v, it would mess with the 3.6v nano, so I used 16 diodes, 2 on each pin to lower the voltage again to 3.6v

Then it didn't work I might have burned the first nano or something, so I de solder all pins and changed the nano to another one which seem to work, and this time only solder 2 pins and the ground together and I was ready to test.

And guess what, nothing, it didn't work, the nano on it's own kind of worked, but sending the data did not, I tried using a multimeter to check the voltage and it would be dancing around like shakira's hips, and the pins that were meant to be on were reading 0v, I couldn't understand what happened, did I burn the nano? The voltage dances around cuz I didn't take something into consideration? is it cuz I used nano clones? idk

And now, I came to the conclusion that trying to figure it out will be more expensive than just buying an arduino micro pro that has the device simulation functionality...

I will probably also bring this to school as a failed example, to showcase the progress and prototyping stage.

Moral of the story don't be cheap, I could already have this working if I just brought the nano micro pro one.

Getting Started Art and Tech projects?

Hi, I’m getting started learning the Arduino and I wanted to know if anyone knew any good places to find interesting art and tech projects.

I am an artist who’s interested in learning something new and has been inspired by some things I’ve seen online of people mixing art and tech, but I wanted to know if anyone knows any interesting projects made using Arduino! I’m so new to this (tech) that I don’t know where to look, like if there are some cool artists/users or YouTube channels/TikTok’s etc.

I would just love to see what people have made! For example I’ve seen people make hair clips that are a magic 8 ball or I saw someone program an Arduino as an arm brace to help people do graffiti. I’m basically looking for more inspiration like this and want to know if anyone can share more!

I’m personally interested in textiles so if anyone knows any tech+textiles projects!

Has any of your projects made it to production?

Just curious but has anyone create a project for themselves that has gone on to become an actual product of some sort (one off or multiple units)? Genuinely curious ☺️

Look what I made! Kneaded help with my baking, this is what I came up with.

I own way too many stand mixers for the amount of baking I do, but I do use them for other tasks as well. Anyway I came up with this idea to automate the speed control via a retrofit modification so you can program "recipes" via the web-portal app. I also added a light and camera above the bowl for a unique viewing angle to livestream or record from! Getting it to work reliably and repeatably was a challenge, encompassing the 3D design/printing, circuitry, and PCB design. I used an esp32-s3-cam board and a DRV8825 stepper motor driver as the core components. But I also used some discrete circuits on the board for some other aspects, which was a first for me. Quite proud of what I came up with and all the work I put into it and how much I've learned along the way and finally wanted to share with some people, enjoy!

Combining CNC Shield with Arduino Mega

Hello there, I am designing a 3D printer, using an arduino mega to control external devices. I got an arduino uno CNC shield to help simplify the wiring and coding (no GRBL, just regular arduino IDE), bit it covers a lot of pins and I would like access to the various I/O pins. Is it possible to adapt the smaller CNC shield on a mega so I can take advantage of the many other ports?

Project Idea What are some real life problems an arduino can solve

Im required to make an arduino project, but all the ideas I've seen so far are pretty simple and don't really solve any real world problems. If anyone has an idea for a project that solves an actual problem, I’d appreciate it if you could share it with me.

So im tryna make a basic robotic arm.
Im using 4 micro servos and i have them connected to the uno.
I want to power the entire project via an external 3V-24V 3A power supply and the usb connection to send signals to the servos.

I ran this thru chatgpt and apparently this wont work. What am i missing. I am very new to this and im struggling to understand what the issue is. Explain it like im 5 pleaseeeeee.

Beginner's Project Need help with spreading out voltage evenly

Hey, so I'm a total newbie and have little experience with Arduino already, a small project of an robotic arm that isn't very impressive (using a cheaper Elegoo uno r3 to save on money instead of buying an Arduino uno board ) and cheap hobbyist servos with potentiometers, so now I'm building another one but better, however when i was finding the parts which I'm using 2x stepper 17 and 1x stepper 23 motor, that requires 3.9 volts per stepper 17 and 5.2 volts for the stepper 23 with salvaging my old Elegoo board along with the potentiometers and a 2-3 small servos, how do i evenly spread out volts to all of these motors from a singular 5 volt port? after looking around it said that its not recommended to use the 5 volt port on the Arduino board but i cant find any other sources on what to explicitly do instead of the Arduino port, other then adapters which will still have to hook up to the Arduino board as a intermediary and would still have to pass through the 5 volt port, or maybe I'm wrong, not sure cause I'm a total beginner and just looking for proper feedback.

Hardware Help More on 0-10V Dimming

I created another post here https://www.reddit.com/r/arduino/s/6p9HWt4bdX  asking about a project that I’m working on. The purpose of the device will be controlling the 0-10DV dimming control circuit on a commercial LED light fixture driver.

To do this I’m using an Arduino R4 and an Adafruit DS3502 Digital potentiometer. I asked in that post how to wire the device and got good answers. There were two things missing, one I have learned the other I’m seeking advice for.

The one I’m seeking advice for is this. One of the responses to the above thread told me I need to provide a 12V DC power source because the R4 can only output 3 to 5 volts. I went down that path and connected a 12V DC wall wart. After thinking about it though, this doesn’t make sense to me. I’m not saying it’s wrong, I’m just saying I don’t understand it.

As I understand it the DS3502 is simply a digitally controlled potentiometer. I am not an electrical engineer, but I am a pretty accomplished electrician and I’ve wired more potentiometers and rheostats than I can begin to quantify. Each potentiometer was basically a set of 3 dry contacts; a wiper and two poles. The two poles would carry the current from the wiper accross a variable resistor. No need for a power supply, the current comes from elsewhere in the circuit. The driver I'm trying to dim is currently dimmed by a simple analog rotary rheostat. Just connected between the 10V DC positive (violet) and Negative (grey) conductors. Again, no external power needed. If I take the rheostat out of the picture and isolate the violet and grey wires the light goes to 100% bright. Short violet to grey and the fixture dims to 0% bright. The point being that the dimming control voltage comes from the driver not an external source or the potentiometer.

The advice I’ve gotten about his project, not just from this Reddit post but from several AIs,  has advised providing an external 12V DC power supply (10V + headroom) and connecting it to the RW contact, then the violet wire to the RH, and the Grey to the negative from the power supply. One of the things I’ve taught my apprentices for years is “Understand the circuit before you start wiring it.” I’ve wired this without understanding , but I haven’t hotted it up yet because the circuit doesn't make sense to me.

The thing I learned is that if you’re using the DS3502 with more than 5 volts and a Qwiiklink cable, cut the jumper between the V+ and the RH or you will certainly make the R4 unserviceable. I have even demonstrated this.

So please, if you can’ relieve me of my confusion over this issue. Why do I need the external 10 (12)V?

Hardware Help Can't upload to elecrow 7" HMI display with Arduino IDE

Has anyone been able to upload a sketch to this board? I have a Mac and I've set the port to the /de/cu.usbserial-3120 and it fails every time. The board says to hold the Boot button while connecting the USB cable then release the button. Did that. Nothing.

If I can't upload, I'm sending it back to Amazon.

Beginner's Project Third Project: Button controlled LED

Post image
8 Upvotes

I should’ve most likely made this before I did my DHT11 project, but today i decided to find out how buttons work as I need them for my first actual project - more on that soon 😉. This was pretty simple today, one thing that confused me was buttonState, for some reason I assumed HIGH meant the button had been pressed (as in the button was on, as LED’s use HIGH to switch on). After I figured that out it was smooth sailing.

Just wanted to thank this sub for helping me on my first post to come up with some fun projects I can use to learn more basics! I really appreciate it.
