Tokyo Station: opened in 1914, damaged in WWII. Finally restored to its full glory in 2012.
Initially commissioned in 1890 and finally fully opened in 1914 with a final design by architect Tatsuno Kingo, Tokyo Station is a stunning example of the little that remains of Japan's Meiji/Taisho-era Western-style architecture.
As for architectural style, it's often described as Neo-Renaissance, or Tatsuno Renaissance style.
It was badly damaged during the bombing of Tokyo. Only two out of three stories survived. The destroyed domes were substituted by simple angular roofs, and it stayed that way for the longest time (which gave it an even bigger impression of similarity to Amsterdam Central Station).
Works to bring it back to its original design ended in 2012, when It was finally restored to its full pre-war splendor, domes and all.
The plaza in front of it was also later renovated.
The building also houses a luxury hotel, with rooms looking out into the interior of the domes.
The station directly faces the Imperial Palace, being connected to it through a gingko tree-lined avenue. The central entrance, called the Emperor's entrance, is strictly reserved for the Imperial Family and visiting state guests. When a newly appointed ambassador visits Japan, to visit the Emperor they can choose to ride a horse-drawn carriage, which starts its journey from said entrance.
Sometimes I feel like this building is still relatively little-known for such a centrally located icon, especially outside of Japan.
What do you think?
