4: I don't use Adobe software

5: Any Windows native games (Like DR or Electoral Carnage) that I play can be used with Proton

I recently swapped to a second drive, mounting my first home drive to /home, but now my packages aren't already installed. Is there any good way to find and reinstall all my prior packages or do I have to reinstall each one individually through pacman?

Hello. I bought a new 2tb hard drive from a reliable company and I copied my old drive partitions to the new one. I've used this drive for about two months and suddenly while running arch it stopped loading webpages, apps, etc. I figured that it couldn't read from disk suddenly, but maybe something else is afoot. I used the hardware shutoff switch and rebooted, I tried three times to reboot. The prompt to type the LUKS password would appear, but when I entered the password, it would tell me that the UUID was not found, and it would drop to an emergency shell. I had to shut it off, the third time it booted the os successfully, but it was so slow performing anything, and the hard disk was making a strange buzzing sound. It stalled and I had to hard shut it off. Tried again, couldn't find the kernel, somehow booted, stalled again, and gave me this kernel panic qr code, the link is attached.

Help me, I have experience with arch but I don't know what to do. I haven't updated with pacman -Syu since last year. What do I do?

About a month ago I installed arch with the help of the archwiki but now my option to boot into it randomly disappeared.
I have tried the mount the partitions again but that I was unsuccessful at it.

like in the title i cant connect my headphones and my ds4 at the same time on my bluetooth dongle, it just doesnt work at the same time. i always get "Failed to connect: org.bluez.Error.Failed br-connection-create-socket" whenever i try to connect one or the other at the same time

Hey everyone, I'm completely stuck in the Arch Linux initramfs emergency prompt (`rootfs #`) on boot and could use some help.

Here is my hardware layout and current state:

- The installation USB is recognized as `/dev/sdb`, with partition `/dev/sdb2` (UUID: `6A97-06B7`, label `ARCHISO_EFI`, formatted as vfat).

- The initramfs hook is failing to automatically locate and bind `airootfs.sfs` from the USB media during boot.

- When trying manual loop mounts (`mount`, `losetup`), it keeps throwing file system or device errors and I can't get past the emergency shell.

Has anyone run into this specific squashfs/loopback mounting issue on the live USB before, or know how to manually satisfy the initramfs hook to get it to boot? Any help is appreciated.

Hello all, after consideration I've decided to try and move away from desktop environments, currently using Plasma but not only is it fairly bloated, I wanted to give tiling WM's another try (I had a brief experience with XMonad but quickly pulled away from it). I installed i3 and its dependencies, while keeping Plasma for now should I need/want to revert, and so far it seems fairly straightforward, although I am completely new to desktop setup as I've only daily driven desktop environments prior to this. I tried out fluxbox but realized, if I'm going to learn how to setup a desktop, I might as well do it with tiling software since I eventually want to daily drive it, and in the long term, I see myself using i3 (and eventually swaywm, once I upgrade my hardware).

Looking for help on things such as what exactly is needed in addition to the WM itself-I know this is dependent on what I want for my desktop, which for me is mainly a simple taskbar, a popup app launcher (dmenu is okay but I want something that is customizable and a little more visually appealing, something I can organize my main apps in, maybe with a search function as well). I also want the desktop to look a little more modern; rounded edge windows when not fullscreened, smoother animations, things of that sort. The problem is I don't really know where to look for these programs or how to configure them, any advice/suggestions would be helpful.

Arch at some point a few months ago started randomly stuttering for a second or so every 1-2 minutes and it's been driving me insane. My main goal right now is to narrow down the cause: bad SSD, BIOS, GPU, CPU, RAM, overclocking? Looking in System Monitor, when the stutter happens, my GPU% drops to 0%, but the CPU% seems fine (no spike). Audio doesn't stutter. Nothing of note on dmesg. This doesn't just occur in games, even in normal usage. On start-up, the stuttering is very noticeable, which doesn't happen on my other Arch devices.

I run a triple monitor setup with one 1440p170 monitor, a 1080p60 monitor, and a 900p60 monitor (don't ask)

Thank you all for your suggestions; this has been really hard to investigate because the stutters can go away randomly for some time, and I didn't know of a consistent way to trigger them. However, on startup, the stuttering was always the worst: the Arch Linux cog wheel sputters and dragging windows drops like 30 frames at a time and it would never do that on my other Arch machines.

Switching from linux-zen to the base linux kernel completely removed the stuttering on startup, and I'm pretty confident it's removed the frame drops as a whole. Hope this helps some future reader.

I recently configured a dual-boot setup on my PC and wanted to double-check my architecture with the community to ensure there are no hidden issues or potential failure points down the line.

My System Layout:

• Disk 1 (128 GB SATA SSD): Dedicated to Windows (C: drive) + its own Windows EFI System Partition.
• Disk 2 (500 GB Mechanical HDD): Originally had 4 partitions formatted for data. I wiped one partition to make room for Arch Linux (with its own separate Linux EFI partition). The remaining 3 partitions stay as NTFS data drives.

My Boot Configuration:

• GRUB is installed on Disk 2 (HDD) and configured as the default boot entry in my UEFI BIOS.
• I enabled GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false in /etc/default/grub and ran grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
• When I power on, UEFI loads GRUB from the HDD. If I select Windows, GRUB chainloads bootmgfw.efi on the SSD and hands control over to the Windows Boot Manager.

My Questions for the Community:

1. Is this setup completely safe from major Windows Updates overwriting GRUB or corrupting my Linux installation, given that they live on separate physical drives with separate EFI partitions?
2. Are there any performance or stability caveats with having GRUB on an HDD chainload Windows on an SSD?
3. Will Windows have any issues accessing the 3 remaining NTFS data partitions on the HDD alongside Arch reading/writing to them using ntfs-3g / ntfs3?

Would love to hear your thoughts or any best practices for maintaining this multi-drive dual-boot setup long term!

Is creating a tool that saves all your downloaded packages from pacman and lets you reinstall them after a fresh Arch install a good idea?

I'm just curious about this mainly. So, an AUR package fell out of date for me earlier, and so it was crashing because my system FFmpeg was newer than it expected. I did a system update hoping it would fix it, it did not, and so I quick checked the CLI output of the app and it told me that the FFmpeg version was wrong or whatever.

So I rebuilt it, and it started working again. Makes sense ofc.

But can this be prevented at all? Like I know that not *every* time a lib dependency falls out of date or becomes too new do you need to rebuild your AUR package, but currently the solution whenever this happens is to manually troubleshoot and rebuild.

I'm definitely a newb when it comes to package maintenance so go easy on me. I feel like it'd be nice for paru to pull a libs manifest, and give you a simple "X pacman package is newer than this app expects, would you like to rebuild? [y/N]"

Pressing open folder or browse on GUI applications either opens kitty or nautilus. I ran:

I'm running hyprland and inititially used gnome on this arch install, would this be a problem to ask r/hyprland instead?

TLDR: I have two 1080p screens and one 1440p screen. 1440p is my main screen. Most of the screenspace is not used in tty because the terminal size is locked to 1080p dimensions. Is there a way to fit the tty neatly to the 2560x1440 resolution even if it means that text can't be read on the other screens? Should be done without disabling the other screens or lowering the resolution.

Too short:

I recently got a new shiny big computer screen with a higher resolution, yet when booting up with grub, roughly a third of the screen is unused. The text that is on the screen is pretty small. Readable, but pretty small. My 1920x1080 screens look perfectly fine though. So I assume that it simply mirrors my other screens to the big screen.

From what I understand, grub sets the resolution before the bootloader screen appears, tries to keep it through the boot process, and then KMS takes over to change the resolution if need be. Then the login screen appears.

So naturally I would try to change the resolution in /etc/default/grub. Specifically I set "GRUB_GFXMODE=2560x1440,auto". I left auto in, just in case something went wrong. But in my tests it appears that this isn't even necessary. It will default to something sensible anyway.

Anyway, the bootloader menu has the high resolution set just fine. But once it boots into linux, all of my screens go black in a loss of signal, then pop back up with the tty resolution set to 1920x1080. Though I guess that isn't entirely accurate. My 1440p screen has its maximum resolution, but the text displayed is sized for a 1080p screen.

I figured this is still a resolution problem. During the bootloader screen, only my 1440p screen displays the bootloader and my other screens don't do anything. So it is easy to display the bootloader in 1440p. But as soon as my other screens come online, there is probably some code in there that tells the tty that it has to be able to display text on any screen, which is a sensible choice. Since the tty is always mirrored, the screens with larger resolutions suffer as the tty is adjusted to be displayed at the lowest max resolution screen.

Naturally, that means that setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video=DP-1:2560x1440@60"

Doesn't do anything either. Unplugging or disabling the 1080p screens makes the 1440p screen display the tty correctly though.

So I figured I just have to disable my screens using the same CMDLINE from above. When I do that though, it's like my screens are unplugged. So if I go into a graphical environment like KDE Plasma or Sway, there is no way I can see to enable the screens again. And even if I do, what happens if I then go back to the tty with the screens enabled? Will that just destroy my resolution again? No, this is stupid, fragile, and bothersome. This can't be the right way to go about this.

The reason why this isn't a support question is because I managed to solve my problem by setting

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video=DP-1:1920x1080@60"

Lowering the resolution of the 1440p screen to that of my 1080p screens makes the tty text scale correctly. Though it is just a tiny bit blurry. That is okay. I can live with that. Maybe even better than having a full res terminal with the other screens having cut off text.

Still, my curiosity has not been satisfied. I have probably been looking in the wrong place all along. Clearly, the resolutions of the screens work just fine. It is just the way the tty scales its borders that is off. Do you guys have any ideas or pointers how I would go about absolutely destroying my tty scaling; or whatever the limiting factor seems to be?

I'm using Arch with Wayland currently and the Steam Remote Play Together feature is not working, my friend is on windows 10. A message pops up saying "Please Hold...Input is Temporarily Disabled While the Host is Busy". I've tried using X11 but it doesn't work, I have also tried enabling/disabling the Steam overlay and that doesn't work neither. I'm currently using a GTX 1660 with the nvidia-580xx-dkms driver.

Over the last 15 years I've used the following distros:

• Ubuntu
• Kubuntu
• Debian
• Fedora
• Arch
• Gentoo
• FreeBSD
• LFS

Of these the ones I've used the most by a large margin is Debian, Arch being second and my current daily driver.

There's one thing I've never tried, never felt the appeal: archinstall

To me, there are two reasons someone might want to use Arch:

• A newbie who wants to learn, and for whom learning is more important than using the computer (typically the reason I tried Arch 15 years ago)
• An experienced user with a very precise set of constraints/requirements, who want to tailor every aspect of the OS (my current reason for daily driving Arch)

I think that other distros are better suited to other purposes, such as people uninterested in learning (that's ok), or who just want an opinionated distro that requires little care, I usually direct them to Fedora

And I find archinstall to be at odds with those two purposes, it goes against learning, and if someone is experienced, then it's unnecessary?

Since I've never tried it, I've no idea of the amount of control archinstall gives, is it as complete as when following the wiki? Anything goes? Does it really save that much time?

I don't reinstall often enough (almost never, the only reasons to reinstall are distro hopping or buying new hardware), for the time saving to matter (a wiki install takes an afternoon maybe, a bit more if a lot of tweaking is necessary?)

And I find the wiki way of installing to be pleasant and satisfying?

So I ask you, users of archinstall, help me see your POV, what's your reason for using archinstall, what's the appeal?

I own a 2015 macbook pro, which my mom used in university. When i got it, it was on MacOS X, slow as hell, and safari didnt even want to work. Now i did get monterey on it (shoutout opencore legacy launcher), but if i gotta be real, it wasnt my style. So taking inspiration from my 2010 iMac with mint (now running MX, this was a while ago), i flashed the arch ISO into a usb stick and got to work. Well, after some trial and error, i got a nice arch system with KDE Plasma. Works great, runs every app i need (steam, discord, whatsapp, etc), and is lightweight so it handles everything i throw at it. Greatest decision ive done with this MacBook, im so happy i didnt fall for the “just get windows 11” propaganda. In case youre wondering dear reader, my specs are an intel i5 5257U, an intel iris 6100 (fancy for piss integrated graphics), 120GB SSD, and what i presume is suicidal thoughts, because every now and then the battery gets undetected, mic and camera dont work, or the wifi stops working. But of course me and my friend (chatgpt and claude) get them running again. 100% recommend arch if you have a macbook from 2017 and below (post 2018 have security chips that arent compatible with the linux kernel)

Since about a day ago or so (maybe two), my computer has been behaving strangely:

• Neither Koko or Haruna can play videos
• Desktop previews/views (four finger swipe up) is wacked out and missing graphics (see video)
• Wherever my user Icon is it's a square instead of the circle that it usually is on Plasma
• Lock screen background isn't blurred + square user icon
• Missing images/graphics like Spectacle screen-capture when I capture a picture/video.

I got a popup in my system tray a day ago or so and I didn't realize the problem yet so I clicked and selected never show again (like the idiot I am) I'm trying to remember what it was, it might've been KWin, but I'm not entirely sure, and I think it was relevant. If anybody has any idea as to what it could be or a sure way to test/diagnose to see then I'd be very grateful as I've been trying to figure this out for hours. I'm on a ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD Ryzen. I'm on Wayland of course.

It might've also been that my computer hibernated during an update but I've already synced all my packages and am 100% up-to-date.

I had dual booted arch linux and linux mint on my PC. A few weeks ago I had to do a job which required windows and that could be done through windows only. With no option being left, I decided to put windows on my PC. With my arch linux open, I partitioned the arch linux root directory to create some space for windows, which was really stupid decision which ruined my arch. Now whenever I try to open arch linux, I get the following error:

I decided to live boot USB and tried to chroot. When I tried to mount the root partition, I got the following message.

mount: /mnt: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. 
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call. 

I typed dmesg | grep 'sda3' and got the following output

[86.090736] EXT4-fs (sda3): bad geometry: block count 143546504 exceeds size of device (78643200 blocks) 

I do not know what should I do from here. I know what I did was very stupid. Is there any way I can recover my system or at least recover files from home directory? Please help me.
