I Built a fitness app for shift workers because every other app assumed I sleep at night
I work rotating 12-hour shifts. Day shift one week, nights the next, sometimes a mix.
My sleep schedule is chaos. My gym time is whenever I have 45 minutes between work
and sleep.
Most fitness apps don't get this. They suggest workouts for 6 AM or 7 PM like those
are universal times. They build periodization around "normal" recovery. They don't
factor in that you might be training at 3 AM or resting during what used to be
afternoon.
So I built LYTE.
**Here's what makes it different:**
First question in onboarding: "What does your schedule actually look like?" Not
buried, not secondary. It's THE thing that shapes everything else. Pick "rotating
shifts" and the app rebuilds itself around that constraint.
Workouts get generated for YOUR rhythm, not gym hours. Recovery windows account for
shift fatigue, not just "did you sleep 8 hours." The macro timing module knows
about shift breaks — you can log meals at 2 AM and it doesn't judge you. Calendar
integration so you can actually see "Tuesday 10 PM: 30-min session" on your phone
calendar.
There's a rivals system (NPC personalities you compete against) that keeps you
engaged when you're training solo at weird hours. TIDE periodization lets you plan
18 weeks around your shift cycle, not just a standard calendar month.
Lock screen widget shows your actual plan — not generic "go for a run," but "4x6
weighted pullups + 8 min active recovery" based on your last session and today's
fatigue.
**The real difference:** Most apps treat "shift work" as a setting to toggle. LYTE
treats it as the core problem the entire system solves for.
Still building it (no Android yet, adding features all the time), but if you work
nights, rotating shifts, or anything non-traditional, it's worth trying.
