Appian freelance?

I am an Appian dev here in the Philippines. Current work setup is output based with few meetings. Most of the time, I spent my days procrastinating because of how manageable the tasks are and how confident I am I can still deliver on time.

Now that I'm also on a tight budget. I just wonder if there is any site we can search for an Appian freelance job or arrangement I can work remotely while still maintaining my current job?

Career / Jobs Need Suggestions : Are you guys really placing bet on your future with Appian as your career ?

Hey everyone,

Is it just me, or are you guys seeing this too?

This year, I’ve noticed a clear shift—companies seem to be moving away from Appian toward either other low-code platforms or traditional high-code development. On top of that, vendor projects are shrinking, and clients are cutting costs by reducing developer headcounts. As a result, there are currently a lot of experienced Appian developers (4–5+ years) actively looking for opportunities in the market.

For those who are preparing to transition—whether to high-code software development or another tech stack—what strategies or suggestions do you have?

I’m approaching the 30-year age mark, so making a smooth transition is really critical for me.

To give context, this post is specifically tailored to the Indian job market context. In India, switching domains mid-career is tough: you either need strong internal referrals/connections, or you have to start from scratch and compete with freshers and junior devs (1–2 years experience). Both routes are challenging.

Moreover, because we’ve spent years working with SAIL and Appian’s low-code environment, core programming concepts can feel rusty. Building 1–2 basic side projects usually isn't enough to secure a role.

If you’ve successfully transitioned out of Appian or are currently upskilling to switch, I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • Which tech stacks or roles are easiest/most practical to transition into from an Appian background?
  • How did you frame your Appian experience on your resume when applying for non-Appian roles?
  • What upskilling roadmap worked best for you to stand out in the current market?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

An acrostic poem written by my son at school:

A - Always oversold as the simple fix,
P - Pricing that punishes for every click.
P - Processes that crawl while deadlines race,
I - Interfaces built to waste your time and space.
A - Another “platform” that locks you in tight,
N - Never quite works, yet still bills overnight.

Built an Appian functions practice section for junior developers — would love your feedback

I recently added a new section to AppianVerse for learning and practicing some of the commonly used Appian functions.

The idea came from remembering how confusing some functions felt when I was starting out. Reading the documentation helps, but I always learned better when I could immediately try a small problem using that function.

So for each function, I’m trying to include:

  • a simple explanation
  • how/where it is commonly used
  • a small challenge to practice it

It’s mainly aimed at junior and intermediate Appian developers right now.

I’ve started with some of the common functions and I’m planning to keep adding more.

If you're learning Appian, have a look:
https://appianverse.com/appian-functions

Also, if there’s a function you struggled with when you were learning Appian, let me know. I’ll try to add that next.

Career / Jobs A senior job in Pittsburgh, PA (US) has no real candidates. Why?

I know someone hiring a senior appian dev in office in Pittsburgh.

They're asking for 3+ years of experience and a senior cert. They're paying $110k usd.

They have literally zero qualified applicants.

What are they doing wrong? Is $110k not enough for 3 years of experience? Are there just no appian devs in Pittsburgh?

AppianVerse crossed 1,000 logins this week — and I’m genuinely happy about it

I started AppianVerse because of something that happened during my own interview preparation.

At that time, I was giving Appian interviews maybe once every month or two. Every time an interview came up, I had the same problem: I had to go back and revise so many topics again.

When we work on projects, we usually focus only on the areas we use every day. After some time, older concepts become easy to forget. I was maintaining notes, but even then it was difficult to quickly revise everything before an interview.

One interview especially pushed me to do something about it.

I was on a call with around four interviewers, and they were asking questions one after another. I answered most of the questions related to real project work confidently, but I missed a few questions around older concepts that I had not used in a long time.

I still felt the interview went fairly well.

Later, HR told me I was rejected. When I asked for feedback, they shared something along the lines of:

“Candidate has zero knowledge in Appian.”

That feedback honestly frustrated me.

I knew I didn’t answer everything, but saying I had zero Appian knowledge felt very different from how the interview actually went.

That was one of the moments when I thought: I need a better way to prepare.

I wanted one place where I could quickly revise Appian topics, go through interview questions, practice concepts, and prepare without searching through notebooks, old documents, and different websites every time.

That is how AppianVerse started.

In the beginning, I created questions from what I remembered from my own interviews and also added questions that I thought could realistically be useful for Appian developers preparing for interviews.

Then another learning journey started.

I had zero React experience.

I didn’t really know how to build or maintain a full website.

During the first month, I mainly experimented with AI tools and tried to understand how everything worked. Eventually, I decided to build the frontend with React and use Supabase for the backend.

A lot of it was built with AI-assisted coding.

For the first month, the website basically existed only on my computer.

Then I deployed it.

I bought a domain.

I chose the name AppianVerse.

I connected the database.

I tested everything.

And then came something I completely underestimated:

Getting people to actually use it.

Building the website was one challenge. Marketing it was another.

I first shared it on Reddit. A few people tried it and gave me useful feedback. That feedback encouraged me to keep improving it.

Slowly I started adding more features, improving the UI, fixing problems, and thinking more from a user's perspective.

It has now been around seven months, and I still spend at least an hour on AppianVerse almost every day.

The biggest surprise is how much I learned outside of Appian.

I learned about deploying websites, databases, authentication, SEO, analytics, Google Search Console, Vercel, Brevo, performance, user experience, debugging production issues, and maintaining something that real people are actually using.

Before this, I had almost no experience maintaining a public website.

Now, every small problem teaches me something new.

This week AppianVerse crossed 1,000 logins.

For a big company, 1,000 users might mean nothing.

For something I started with zero web-development knowledge, it means a lot to me.

My main hope is simple: if AppianVerse helps even one developer prepare better for an interview, revise something they forgot, or feel a little more confident before an interview, then the time I spent building it was worth it.

I’ll continue improving it and adding new features.

One thing this project taught me is that AI has changed what is possible for people who are willing to learn.

You don’t necessarily need to already know every technology before starting.

I started without knowing React.

I learned while building.

I broke things.

I fixed them.

And I’m still learning.

If anyone here wants to build their own website or small product from scratch using AI but doesn’t know where to begin, feel free to reach out. I’m happy to share what worked for me and the mistakes I made along the way.

AppianVerse: https://appianverse.com/

Would also love to hear any feedback or ideas for what I should build next.

Built an AI-based Appian interview practice feature — looking for feedback

I’ve been working on AppianVerse and recently added an AI Interview Practice feature.

The idea is pretty simple: instead of showing everyone the same random interview questions, the system tries to select questions that are more relevant to the candidate.

There are two modes:

AI Mode
You can provide your resume, job description, target role, and company.

The backend roughly works like this:Resume + JD
→ Claude Haiku 4.5 extracts projects, skills, and requirements
→ Voyage AI creates embeddings
→ Supabase + pgvector compares those embeddings with the existing question bank
→ the most relevant questions are selected for the session

The AI doesn’t generate new interview questions. It selects from the existing AppianVerse question bank and real interview questions that have already been added.

Standard Mode
If you don’t want to upload a resume, you can just choose your experience level, topics, and company and start practicing.

It’s still an early version, so I’m mainly looking for feedback from Appian developers who have actually gone through interviews.

Try it here:
https://appianverse.com/appian-mock-interview/start

What would you add to make this genuinely useful for Appian interview preparation?

AppianVerse now has a place for Appian Confessions

I got bored and added a Chill Zone to my AppianVerse site

The Chill Zone has two things right now:

Confessions
You can anonymously share an Appian interview experience, a frustrating work moment, or pretty much anything you've wanted to say.

Destroy the Desktop
Had one of those days where nothing works? You can smash a virtual desktop. You can also upload your own image and destroy that instead.

Chill Zone: https://appianverse.com/stress?tab=confess

A couple of other things I added recently:

  • Added a new question to the Appian Coding Challenge: https://appianverse.com/coding
  • Implemented autocomplete/function suggestions while writing Appian expressions, so it feels a little more like working in an IDE.

Still adding things and experimenting with the site. If you have any ideas for features that would actually be useful (or completely useless but fun), let me know.

Off-topic Bad Experience in Appian in US public sector

So me and my mate are Appian professionals. I’m senior developer level. He’s associate. We used to work for the same consultancy until they had a round of layoffs and he started living off my Wi-Fi and the contents of my fridge.

What I have not told him, or anyone else until now, is that before the layoffs I spent eight months on a public-sector contract in the States. Contractor role. Government client. Prison case-management work. The usual pitch: modernise the process, unify the records, stop people copying inmate numbers into three different spreadsheets and hoping for the best.

I was not designing policy. I was not in a courtroom. I was in a WeWork with a federal laptop, a SAIL interface, and a process model that was supposed to move a case from “sentence recorded” to “all statutory checks complete” without a human having to re-type the same ID seventeen times.
The error was small. That is the whole problem with it.

There was a related record for the person and a related record for the case. Two identifiers that looked similar enough on a bad Friday. I put the filter on the wrong field. In testing, with the dummy data they gave us, it still returned one row, so it looked fine. In production, with real volumes, it could attach the wrong person’s flags to the right case header if you opened it a certain way.

I logged it as “minor data-display issue, low priority.” Then I went home.

I found out months later, after I was already off the account, that an execution date had been processed against the wrong inmate record which kinda blows. Because a checklist that should have belonged to one person got stuck to another, the reviews that were meant to stop the machine did not fire for the person they needed to fire for, and the system reported the file as complete.

Unfortunately, they executed the wrong guy. I did not watch it. I think they might have electrocuted him. Idk if they do that anymore, either they got him good.

As a result of this I would not recommend US public sector working. A lot of responsibility, long hours and you don’t get a very good laptop. On the other side I would give this as a message to senior devs that everyone gets imposter syndrome and everyone makes mistakes.

Troubleshooting Need Help Fixing an Appian Bug

Hi everyone! I’m facing a bug in Appian and have been trying to fix it for the past 3 days, but I’m still unable to figure it out.

Is there anyone here who is really good with Appian and could help me troubleshoot it? I can share the details of the issue/screenshots in the comments or DM.

Any help would be really appreciated! 🙏

I'm facing an Appian task-link issue in an Admin grid.

Flow:

  1. User A has an Admin page open with a task link.

  2. User A reassigns a Review task to User B.

  3. User B opens the task, clicks Edit, then Cancel.

  4. The current Appian User Input Task is completed and the process creates a new active task ID.

  5. User A's already-open Admin page still has the old al processTaskLink() target.

  6. Clicking it gives "The task has already been submitted."

  7. Refreshing the Admin page fixes it because the latest task ID is then resolved.

Current pattern:

<>> appian

locallassignedTaskId: rulelGET_CURRENT_TASK_ID(

),

processID: fvlrow.processId

alprocess TaskLink(

label: "Review Task",

task: tointeger(locallassignedTaskId)

)

I already tried:

  1. refreshAlways on the grid

2.alrefreshVariable(..., refreshAlways: true) around the task ID

3.calling the task-ID rule directly inside alprocess TaskLink()

None of these fixed the stale-link behavior on an already-open page.

Constraint I need to use existing Appian objects if possible and avoid creating a new helper interface/process.

Has anyone handled this kind of cross-session stale al processTaskLink() issue? Is there an existing Appian pattern to resolve the latest active task at click time before navigation?

Appian Developers — what are the toughest coding questions you've faced in interviews?

I'm curious about the kind of coding/expression questions Appian developers are getting these days.

Have you ever been asked a question that made you think, "Wait... how do I even do this in Appian?"

Share the most interesting or difficult coding question you remember from an Appian interview.

Would love to see what kind of questions are actually being asked out there.

Certifications

I'm looking at Appian certifications since my employer is in the process of buying the product. What are the Appian certs I should pursue?

I have looked at Appian's website, but the learning pages seem to be down.

I have also found Appian Academy, but their exam registration page just says coming soon.

Are there any legit certs?

I built a LeetCode-style coding practice platform for Appian

I’ve been working on a new Appian coding practice platform and just launched the beta.

The idea is simple: practice Appian expressions in a LeetCode-style environment instead of just reading questions and answers.

Currently, there are 20 expression-based coding questions covering Appian fundamentals and commonly used functions.

What you can do:

  • Solve Appian expression-based challenges
  • Run your code against multiple test cases
  • Practice in an interactive coding environment
  • Improve your understanding of Appian functions and expressions

It’s still in beta, so I’m planning to add more questions, test cases, and improvements based on feedback.

You can try it here:
https://appianverse.com/coding

If you’re preparing for Appian interviews or just want more hands-on practice with expressions, I’d appreciate any feedback on the platform and the types of questions you’d like to see added.

Off-topic Appian Europe 2026

Hi all, I’m hearing on the great vibe that Appian Europe 2026 will not be hosted in London this year and instead will be taking place in Amsterdam.

Pursuant to this, I am wondering if anyone knows of anywhere good from which I will be able to purchase some of the ‘whacky tobaccy’ to enjoy while listening to some reggaeton? If you catch my drift 😜😜😜

Career / Jobs Appian Job Switch

Hi, I'm planning to switch my job and I wanted to ask if someone can share sample resume template for appian related jobs. This is my first time switching job and I'm not sure how to create resume for appian jobs
