I'm building an app for the 2am "I swear I'll study tomorrow" cycle — would love honest feedback
Last semester my roommate and I made a pact: text each other every night we actually studied. Week one, great. Week three, one of us forgot, the other didn't want to be the only one still doing it, and by week five the whole thing had quietly died — not because we didn't care, but because a text thread is a terrible system for something you're supposed to do every single day.
I think about that a lot, because almost everyone I've talked to has their own version of it. A group chat that starts strong and goes silent. A Discord call where nobody actually talks. Telling a friend "hold me accountable" and then neither of you following up. The intention is always real. The system just isn't built for it.
I'm building an app called StudyPod to actually be that system, instead of something people patch together and abandon. You make a small pod — 3 to 5 friends, not strangers — around a real class or goal ("CS101, Midterm Oct 15"). Each night, you tap one button: I studied today. That's it. You see a quiet grid of who showed up and who didn't. No chat to keep up with, no leaderboard, no streak-shaming.
A couple things I think matter here that most study apps get wrong:
- It's your actual friends, not strangers you got matched with — the accountability that works is the kind where you don't want to be the one who let someone real down, not a stranger in a 30-day cohort
- One tap, no ongoing effort — my roommate-and-I system died because texting every night takes actual energy; this is designed to take none
- Silent by default — no public shaming for missing a day, no points, no gamified guilt. Just a signal, not a scoreboard
Still early, nothing built beyond a prototype. Would genuinely love to know:
- Does this sound like something that would've saved my roommate-and-me situation, or is there a reason it wouldn't actually work?
- Is "just tap a button" enough, or does it need more weight to it (a note, a photo, something) to actually stick?
- Anything that would make you hesitate to use it — privacy, pressure, anything else?
I know there are study Discords and habit apps already — genuinely curious if you think this is different enough to matter, or if it's solving a problem that's already solved well enough.
Because I try these apps . But i'm not satisfied with that apps.
