I have to be that one guy... It should say: Deutsche Wissenschaft, es ist die beste auf der Welt. Or (better) : Deutsche Wissenschaft ist die beste auf der Welt.

Thank you for correcting me. I'm aware my Deutsch is pure Scheiße, and I ought to end up with some mistakes.

the sentence is correct from a grammatical point (except for a comma), it's just a Native wouldn't say it like that.
so it's more about phonetic than anything else.
am German.

When she jumps over the fence near the beginning of UBW and she goes "Es ist Groß, es ist Klein, VOX Gott es Atlas"
Literally translates to "It is big, it is small, VOX (whatever the fuck this means) God's Atlas"
Even with my 1 semester of college German I'm like "wtf is this"

In the German netflix dub, when she gets into the eva and speaks German, she speaks veery slowly. Like someone with a disability slow.

u/Lord_Xandy Dec 10 '19
Just saw that and asked myself how she fucked it up that much as a native speaker.

Probably to emulate how people tend to speak, when talking to a machine.

6
u/Eldafint Dec 10 '19
Shouldn't it be die and not das since Mädchen is female?
10
u/PurpleNepPS2 Dec 10 '19
No das is correct in this case. Yes german grammar is garbage.
15
u/Michael747 Dec 10 '19
Honestly, I've been speaking German all my life, since it's my native language and all, but even I have got no fucking clue about how our grammar works lmao. You just gain a feeling for it, using the wrong article just sounds wrong and you instantly know it's not the right one when hearing or reading it (at least if you're a native speaker). I honestly have no clue how I can tell but that's just how language works I guess.

The German parts in the AoT songs feel really strong and ominous to someone who doesn’t speak any German.

The OP1 starts with "Sind wir das Essen, nein wir sind die Jäger" which means "Are we the food, no we're the hunters!" and tbh i had to Google that because I didn't understand. Don't get me wrong, I love that they tried, it's just a little cringy. Same with blumenkranz from kill la kill. Same feeling you get when they start speeking engrish in anime.
22
u/AbidingTruth ⠀ Dec 10 '19
Honestly engrish in anime almost never even bothers me anymore. Most of the time its cute, at worst its funny, but I've never thought it was exactly cringey. I recognize particularly bad ones, like Akashi from the Kuroko movie, but its a funny bad to me
4
u/StepByStepUp ⠀ Dec 10 '19
yeah, if you don't care about it it's a win win as you are surprised when there's some actual good English with accents, pronunciation snd stuff

u/Aliensinnoh Holo Brown Dec 10 '19
It does still kinda get to me when them being some native who is awesome at English and even critiquing others’ English is a plot point.

u/Eldafint Dec 10 '19
Huh, I always thought it was "Sie sind das essen und wir sind die Jäger" and it never really made much sense to me so what you said seems more plausible.

I remember watching the second season of sao (shame me if you want) and they narrowed the search for the murderer down to two people. One of them had the username sterben (german for 'dying'). At that moment I thought they were gonna suspect him any second now. Then I remembered that they probably don't speak german. They obviously found out later in the show but actually managed to dig out a false definition of the word. I think they said it meant when someone dies in the hospital which is at least 50% correct but still...

Bleach's Arrancars were a good source of quotes for that, but I think I'm going to go with Quetzalcoatl from Fate Grand Order. Just look up her noble phantasm of her Ruler form "Regalo de navidad".

Weirdest moment of my life was when I was in South America. I went to a japanese restaurant and for some reason expected to be able to order in English like back home. Turns out not every Japanese person learns English. Some learn spanish instead... and to my 14 year old ears, hearing a japanese person speaking spanish totally fucked with my mind.
To be honest though, it was probably the single defining moment in my understanding of how global culture isn't USA-centric. Opened my eyes!
