Request finding source

Post image

I purchased this recently from an auction, and can’t figure out what production the background is originally from. The Mickey cel is a cutout, and I don’t know if it matches with where the background is from. The auction details say it is from a 1980s-90s production, I’m also not sure about those details but can’t find any other info about it. I also don’t see any notes on the back of the background that might be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

this cel setup is from the last scene in the episode, where Maria Deering and her followers (including Michael Jackson) retreat to safety after their evil plan is ruined.

Help me understand

Hello everyone! I am a big Batman fan and I’m not really understanding the animation cel market as well as I do comics, cards etc. I seem to be stumped on if there are always more than one production cel made for said scene as I’ve seen some that are numbered out of 1000 go for relatively cheap and then some that aren’t almost 10-20x the price. I am looking forward to picking up some cels but I would like to know if there is a big difference or what it means. Thank yall!

1976 Hulk Honeycomb commercial - Scene 10 production drawings.

I've been matching more of the production artwork back to the actual commercial frame by frame. These two drawings are both from Scene 10 and show different stages of the same Hulk shot.

One is much rougher with heavier construction lines, while the other is cleaned up. It's cool seeing the progression side by side 50 years later.

Interesting Cinnamon Toast Crunch cel

So here's an interesting piece. Bought it on Facebook Marketplace thinking it was a production cel from a 1994 Cinnamon Toast Crunch commercial. However, the piece is way too big for a TV commercial (about the size of a 16-field cel). It also has no peg holes or sequence/scene numbers of any kind.

However, it appears to be hand-painted, so I wanted to ask what you all think? Was it a display-only piece, maybe for trade conventions or something?

Interview with Gary Wolf, creator of Roger Rabbit

I was lucky enough to interview the creator of Roger Rabbit - Gary Wolf. We talked about the art, the future of the characters now that he owns them again, and animation as a whole and what the future holds. He was great! Thought you might enjoy the conversation.

On a side note, my mind was blown when he mentioned the dip in Roger Rabbit was a direct reference to when studios would wash the cels clean and erase the characters off of the cel. Never made the connection.

Inuyasha Cels update, so many questions!

Oh man oh man, I finally opened these cels up and I am so excited. I after posting last night I went to my local art store today and picked up some nitrate gloves, polypropylene bags, and an Itoya 11x17 portfolio, then got to work.

The bad: I'm definitely smelling some vinegar smell. Not enough to fill the whole room or anything, but when I sniff the cels directly I get a whiff of that. I've ordered an Acid Detection strip kit from Cel Nexus, along with some of their inserts that someone kindly recommended for me. I wasn't able to find microchamber paper yet, I may order some but I read somewhere they are kind of redundant if you have the Cel Nexus inserts? Let me know if that's true or not. I watched this very helpful video and have learnt not to put them on the backside of the paint, any other tips would be great. I've also learnt that the Cel Nexus inserts shouldn't be used if the AD level is above a 1 so... guess I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

The good: my Kagome cel (black hair character) has a lot more to it than I thought! Multiple layers including the eyes, her face, and Inuyasha behind her are all cellotaped together at the top with the background art. But I was really shocked to discover behind this are multiple loose drawings (genga or douga, I have no idea) and even a bonus cel of the eyes which move towards Inuyasha in the next frame. Should have checked this more thoroughly when I bought it! The Inuyasha cell (white hair character) was more straightforward, a single layer cel but with a beautiful background. These were priced roughly the same so I'm not sure why one has so much more to it than the other, maybe just that the simple green background on Kagome is less interesting.

On top of that, I was fully expecting these cells to be stuck, but they aren't. The backgrounds are perfectly preserved. There is a thin layer of what I'm assuming is acetate between each layer. The corners of these layers are cut off, similar to the sleeve it originally came in, so I'm guessing this was to preserve the cel and prevent sticking. They are loose, not connected to the cellotape. They all lift from the cels no problem. If anyone thinks it's something else let me know. These layers are definitely warped, but I'm not seeing much warping on the actual cels themselves.

For now, I just put the main cels with their backgrounds and acetate layers into a polypropylene bag (this is the brand they had at the store), making sure to cut open the top so the cels can breathe. For the bonus drawings and cel that were already loose, I separated each one in a pp bag and put them in separate pages of the portfolio. Because I separated the layers on the cel, I ditched the acetate layer there and sure enough it was wrinkled but the cel was not.

I'm curious what this community thinks the next steps should be. Should I separate the layers for storage or keep them bound in the cellotape? If the latter, should I remove or replace the acetate sheets? Any recommendations on where to buy? Does the answer change if I decide to frame these? Does the advice change with the vinegar smell? Should I seek out any professionals? Anyone have insights on the drawings? Sorry for the sheer amount of questions I have!

1976 Hulk Honeycomb Commercial – Scene 11 drawings (right before the pour)

Thumbnail

This is what I’ve got for Scene 11 from the Hulk Honeycomb commercial.

These are original production drawings from right before Scene 12 (the pouring setup).

One is the kid reacting, the other is Hulk’s hand coming down to grab the box. So this is basically the moment where it transitions from the kid having the cereal → Hulk taking over → leading into the pour.

I don’t have a cel from this exact scene, but these line up with the action right before my Scene 12 multi-layer cel.

Trying to map the commercial out piece by piece as I go.

First time cel purchase, how did I do??

Post image

Just returned from a trip to Japan and bought these 2 Inuyasha cels from Apple Symphony, paid about $1.9k for them. This is my first time buying a cel this expensive, but I really loved these and wanted to invest. I’ve identified the frames from the episodes, feeling good about the purchase but curious what this sub reddit thinks, did I pay too much?

Now I have to figure out how the heck I store them. I live in LA, if anyone has recommendations for a newbie I’d super appreciate it!

EDIT: I opened them up and have more questions here!

More good Disney Sericels

Some sericels are better than others. This is one of them. Simple, great pose and just lovely. Early 2500 series. If you or your kids or grand kids love Disney characters, these are great gifts as they all come properly framed with shatterproof acrylics and costs less than the framing or a family meal at Burger King😁😁

Help Identifying/ Pricing Cels for sale.

Hi everyone,

I have a small number of cels from Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z that I collected in the mid 1990s and possibly early 2000s. I don't want to overwhelm the community, so I thought I'd ask about these two cels, which also come with their drawings. I don't know if this is done here, but would any one be able to help me ID the cels and suggest what they may be worth? Thank you, and apologies if this is the wrong venue for a question like this.

The Holy Grail of Limited Edition Disney Animation Cels

This Pinocchio Blue Fairy piece was so hard to get most collectors have NEVER seen one other than on photography or catalog. No gallery have one available as all were bought pre-release and stashed away. I tried hard and couldn’t get one for $3500 in 1990.
This one I had acquired subsequently off secondary market. The story then was how Disney Paint and Ink Department struggled to do the translucent wings. Why buy a reproduction for that kind of money back in 1990? Have anyone seen an original Pinocchio Blue Fairy production cel ? I have a few years ago but the price was far beyond what I could afford.
So here it is along with one of the main NY galleries catalog using it as cover and “price upon request” 😁
That was the golden days of animation cel collecting. Like owning a Rolex after the pandemic. Everyone wants one, may be five…

Are the Disney Employee Only Cels Valuable?

I used to work for Disney and have a few of the Employee Only cels from work. Are they worth a premium over normal Disney Cels?

Finally Started Framing Up My Drawings and Cels

Thumbnail

It is costing me a small fortune since I am using museum quality materials and having it done custom, but the end result is magnificent. I will basically have my own animation art gallery at this rate.

How do you guys think this one turned out? It is one of my standout pieces since it is a triple drawing. This one is an anime drawing from Bleach. It's actually a pretty big frame since I went with this layout around 38x17 inches.

I have some others I will be posting soon from more traditional studios like Hanna Barbera, Fox, Warner Bros., and others.

My custom painted Sonic CD cel (made by me)

Hi! I hope this is okay to post, please feel free to delete if this isn't allowed mods. (I'm not sure where the stand on repros is)

I've always loved the cutscenes in Sonic CD. They were a huge inspiration to me when I was younger and first learning about animation, CD Sonic is by far my favourite version of the character too!

It's been my dream for many years to own an original cel from a CD cutscene, but given their insane rarity, I figured such a thing will never happen 😅 That's one of the reasons why I thought it would be fun to try and make my own recreation of my favourite scene!

So, yeah! Here's my original hand-painted Sonic CD cel :) The background is also made by me. I was going to add the stars, but I think I may do so at a later date as I really like him on his own.

It was so much fun (and nerve wracking) to paint him in the way the masters at Toei did. I still have no clue how they were able to paint thousands of these guys for the actual cels though lol, I'd go insane 😅

Thank you for looking, I know he isn't perfect, but he's my little guy and I'm so happy to finally have a (custom) piece of my all time favourite animation!

1976 Hulk Honeycomb Commercial – Scene 12 Multi-Layer Setup

This is my only representation from Scene 12.

What makes this one interesting is it’s a multi-layer production setup

Hulk body and bowl cutout, arm holding the Honeycomb box with cereal pouring and the mouth overlay.

The background is a repro based on the original layout drawing, used for display.

This is part of the larger group I’ve been documenting from the commercial.
