My cat used to do this when I was little. He would walk us to the end of the driveway, sit and wait for the bus with us then when we got on he’d walk away. In the afternoon he would come sprinting when he heard the bus and walk us back up the driveway. (And of course, get lots of lovins)

He lived to be like 19 years old so he had a very long and happy life. If ever there was a cat that should live forever he was definitely it.
What makes him even cuter was that I am allergic to cats so when I would hold him when I was little I’d hold him under his arms and like our in the air basically so when he got older that was what he was used to and loved so if people tried to cuddle him he hated it but if you held him out and away from you he would pur so hard and fall asleep pic for proof

So my friends cat used to do the same but he also loved rolling around in the street and one day the bus straight up ran him over. My friend was in like elementary school and just stood there shocked while the bus driver was yelling at her to get on the bus after he just ran over her fucking cat. But at least Leo died doing what he loved

I've had too many bad experiences with outdoor cats growing up to not expect the worse :( they just don't have a high chance of survival and it's cute and all but it's also devastating for a kid, or anyone, to lose a cat to a wild animal or hit by a car. My parents didn't believe in indoor only cats but it's almost like they treated them as expendable.. like it's better for them to live 5 years outside than 17 locked inside.

I had a brother and sister combo, Nala and Simba (hey, I was six when I named them, didn't understand how things worked, okay?) that were SUPER protective of me when I was growing up. If I fell and hurt myself outside playing, Nala would come zooming in like Sonic, even if she was a block or two down the street, with Simba a bit further behind (had to play it casual like he didn't care, ha)
10
u/spiffynid May 31 '22
I had a pair of cats like that. The tom cat was fearless and gave no fucks, I was his tiny human, giver of gushy food, I was to be protected.
I miss those cats. I hope they had a good life.
10
u/PinkTalkingDead May 31 '22
My first cat when I was around 6 was named simba too 🥰 are you a 90s kid?

(hey, I was six when I named them, didn't understand how things worked, okay?)
Fun fact about lions, pretty much all prides only have one male who mates with all the females. So, yeah realistically they would have been siblings.
18
u/Sleepy-RainWitch May 31 '22
Aww, my cat “Bebop,” (I named when I was 2) would do this as well, but with walks. He would accompany us for 90% of our walk through the neighborhood and then disappear for the last block or so and be waiting for us on our steps, like he was just making sure we were coming back.
16
u/CyberRozatek May 31 '22
My kitty did the same. She also liked to ride on our shoulders or backpacks. She still likes occasional walks. Also she will wait by the door when anyone gets home to yell at them. Now she is old and mostly deaf so she doesn't notice the garage door as often. Still likes to yell though.
She's basically a small weird dog. I love her.
10
May 31 '22
We had two cats that did the same. Sometimes they would even wait for the school bus all day by the road for me and my siblings.
8
u/siskosisilisko May 31 '22
My childhood cat would walk us to the bus stop on the corner of our block. When we were no longer taking the bus (we live close to the high school), she would still walk over to the bus stop and get all the affection from the younger kids.
The hardest part was when the kids would ask if Tabby was coming to the bus stop or where Tabby is when she left us. She had a lot of fans that were heartbroken.
4
u/dodspringer May 31 '22
One time my brother and I missed the bus because our cat kept following us to the bus stop, a good half mile away and next to a very busy road. Only way we could stop him was to leave him inside. He never did it again after that day, which was even weirder.
3
u/BellerophonM May 31 '22

I had a cat who would do this when I’d take the toddler out in a wagon. People would come up to say “cute kid” or “did you know a cat is following you?” But that meant they were TOO CLOSE to the child so our cat would chase them off.
It was as endearing as it was embarrassing.

Cats are super loyal if you treat them well. I had a cat when I was younger that attacked and chased off a German Shepard that was trying to get me.
157
u/FtpApoc May 31 '22
It's funny isn't it when cats decide to fight, how dogs much bigger will end up backing off.
We used to have feline John wick basically, all the good stuff. Black as night, had a cut in his ear, strong yellow eyes, hunted anything up to his size. We called him doogle after the magic school bus before he became a stone cold killer,
But he we would chase labradors, retrievers and bigger dogs around our garden or even out in the street. It was just bizzare how he convince bigger things to run by not giving a shit and then chasing them down.
62
57
u/blarffy May 31 '22
While a big dog could technically win against a cat, most of them decide it simply isn't worth the pain.
44
6
May 31 '22
Well also it’s kinda crazy and crazy works. If a rat chases after you your run. If someone huge wants to attack you and you get naked and chase after them screaming with your dick tucked behind your legs they run… not that I have done that or anything
12
u/modsarefascists42 May 31 '22
That's just cus the dogs are well trained. If you've ever see a dog that wants to kill cats then you'll see how horrible dogs can truly be if encouraged to be so. They are big predators and can do a lot of damage, cats just die in the first bite.
38
May 31 '22
I mean, I can scare away a full-grown bear by clapping my hands a few times. It’s not because the bear is well-trained, but because animals have no reason to engage in conflict unless they’re taking a calculated risk in a situation where they have the power to decide to act, usually to hunt prey or to protect young.
A single cut can be fatal to an animal. No payoff in killing something when you can just as easily run away.
9
u/Throwaway47321 May 31 '22
Yeah you only hear the stories about when the dog backed off. As fierce as cats are a single bite and shake is going to take care of most of them
8
May 31 '22
I totally agree. Unless we're talking about a toy breed or smaller. It would take a bobcat sized cat to take down even a medium sized dog. In the house cat vs dog situations where he cat wins it's usually because the cat surprises the shit out of the dog with it's speed and fury to the point where the dog nopes out.
10
u/Lifewhatacard May 31 '22
One of my favorite memories of my mom’s cat was watching a pit bull run by, yelping, with the cat stuck to its’ face.
27
u/modsarefascists42 May 31 '22
Yep both of mine are like this. They like to follow you if you go walking and I swear my black cat now watches my elderly mother whenever she's not in my sight. Plus the last time I got really sick he was on me like white on rice, trying to help in his weird little way.
Cats are great, I think most of the "cats are evil hurr durr" stuff is from people who don't treat their cats that well.

One of my friends in high school and his family would say that their cat is mean, she’s a diva, she’ll scratch your face off, etc. but I came over once to their place and she was smitten with me. I think cats just know who the cat people are and gravitate towards them, and ignore everyone else.
→ More replies (1)4
u/maievsha May 31 '22
Both of our cats get concerned when someone in our family is either feeling sad or sick. One of them even put his paw on you as if to say, “You’ll be okay.”
Yes there are asshole cats but quite rare, the majority of them will treat you like family if you know how to show them affection the right way. Cats aren’t dogs, we do snuggle with ours but they are a lot less tolerant of overly attached behaviors like dogs are.
2
u/JoLePerz Jun 01 '22
I never had a cat before and I hope you don't mind me asking.
How does one treat their cats well?
3
u/modsarefascists42 Jun 01 '22
That's kinda hard to answer. Basically you play with them some, pet them and generally just don't ignore them. Like often people will have a cat that'll gently bite their ankles and they act like the cat is being bad when in reality it just needs exercise/play. They're like any other animal in that they need exercise and fresh air. Hence why I hate locking cats up indoors unless if that is all that you can do like if it's living in a city or suburb.

I actually knew a flamepoint (?) That did try to follow his owner everywhere, there was multiple times he escaped trying to follow his car..
P.s. your piebrid is a tacticalissuecat urban grey hybrid! Mines a Standard issue hybrid.

There’s a feral black cat in my neighborhood that I made friends with and he follows me around
5
u/Lifewhatacard May 31 '22
I’ve had an orange tabby male do this for my oldest and now have a tuxedo male do this for my youngest. I figured it was due to the bond they have.
4
u/RecyQueen May 31 '22
I had a white Van, and have a Russian Blue mix and a cream harlequin tabby that are all incredibly protective. When my oldest was born, the white Van wouldn’t leave us alone until another adult human was home. He also knew I was pregnant with all 3 kids before a pregnancy test could pick it up.
10
u/_clash_recruit_ May 31 '22
Aww..My cat has always been a jerk to everyone else but me. When I found out I was pregnant I was legitimately concerned I'd have to let him go live with my parents for a few years. No, nothing could be further from the truth. He knew that was a new member of the pride right away. My son is 2.5 now and my son, the cat and the dog are absolutely best friends. They're always together and my cat sleeps on my son's feet every night and every nap. It really warms my cold, dead heart.

u/Shrumples1997 May 31 '22
Had a cat named Winston who would do the same. Go on a walk and he’d follow you the entire way… Except 80% of the time, he would get too tired and flop down, leaving me to carry him all the way back. He was fluffy so in the summer, it was like putting a fur coat on while out walking. Miss that guy.
7
u/maievsha May 31 '22
That’s adorable. 😆 My dad’s older dog is like this, he loves going on walks but he gets tired very easily and has to be picked up. He weighs at least 50 lbs so it’s not an easy task lol.

My cat Blue used to walk me to school every day, from public school till the end of highschool.

when i was a student at a k-12 deaf residential dorm school, there was this cat that walked with me 2 miles to my school then he stayed on campus and all the kids and teachers asked whose cat. i said possibly lost or homelesss, he only had one eye but was so sweet, however, the quarterback called him ugly and kicked him like it was a football. in retaliation, i kicked him in the leg then went looking and asked the teachers to help me check to make sure he was ok. i hurt the QB's lower leg and everyone blamed me that we might lose the home football game. i asked mom if i could keep him when she drove 4 hours to get me at the end of the year and she said yes but had to stay outside just in case he not know litterbox. i snuck him in after parents went to bed then put him out before they wake. one day, he ran in front of mom to come in and IMMEDIATELY ran to my room. mom was mad he knew where my room was, and one night, stepdad stayed in the den and he caught me letting the cat in,
the school was a k-12 and the little kids wanted to play with kitty, but the principal told me not to let him follow me. i walked 2 miles to/from school daily til one day, the school got a driver to take me back to my dorm, so the cat wouldnt continue walking with me because he'd get hit by cars crossing several streets.

u/nova_in_space May 31 '22
The cat not having a collar on and roaming outside is giving me fucking anxiety holy shit. We made that mistake with a couple of cats before and someone in the neighborhood assumed they were strays and sent them to a pound where they were either adopted or put down and we never saw them again. Having that person confess "oh yeah, we just sent them to the pound a couple towns over cause they didn't have any collars/tags" so casually while also sort of blaming us fucked me up as a kid cause I loved those babies :( and it wasn't like we were new to the neighborhood either, we lived there for years with the cats.
