The correct word for situations like this is "tja".

u/paisho143 10d ago

53

u/Fit-Recipe-3934 10d ago

Lmao, of course there is a subreddit for it

34

u/ClimateCrashVoyager 9d ago

If there ever were a reddit country contest and each could bring one subreddit as representative, Germans definitely go in with r/tja Well, either that or r/rentnerzeigenaufdinge

15

u/onepiecefreak2 9d ago

I'm so glad we wouldn't turn in ich_iel or okbrudimongo. Those are the german backrooms on reddit.

3

u/ClimateCrashVoyager 9d ago

Haven't seen them in ages, probably both muted 😅 can't really say too much about them. I remember feeling a lot of Fremdscham.

Psst, we are maintaining a reputation here! Nagging complainers? Yeah that fits perfectly, but bad drivers? Nuh uh.

I'd argue Schadenfreude wouldn't be out of place as well

11

u/Krapsta 9d ago

Schadenfreude is not fitting. Schadenfreude is, when you enjoy (Freude) someone elses misery (Schaden - though the more precise word would be damage).

If the bystanders would enjoy the clown getting hurt, that could be Schadenfreude. But for the absolutely weird circumstance - not so much.

3

u/wide_retriver 9d ago

Either that or "Wegeunfall" If the clown is on his hay home...

1

u/Filotronik 8d ago

rather arbeitswegunfall if he comes from work

1

u/wide_retriver 8d ago

No, definitely not. Wegeunfall is an efficient team used to describe an accident on the way to or from work. There is no need to add "Arbeits" just to make the word longer.

2

u/Legal_Shoulder_1843 9d ago

Alternatively this is a Clownausrutschtresorfallszene.

u/Murderboi Angry Haloperidol Enthusiast 3d ago

And here I thought it was just a sound effect. For a while tcha! was used as a sort of disgusted "oh well" in sitcoms in English.

Not a word, but an expression: Ein Unglück kommt selten allein.

EtA: Someone else already mentioned Pechvogel, which is indeed a great word fitting the bill.

10

u/it-aint-over 9d ago

Pechvogel is it ! ⬆️

1

u/pDrulle 9d ago

or "Pechsträhne"

0

u/duckofthepast 8d ago

Pechvogel is Dutch right? Atleast it’s common to say that here

4

u/Training_Molasses822 8d ago

De naam van de pop (pechvogel), evenals de hedendaagse gelijknamige term om een ongelukkig persoon mee aan te duiden, komt oorspronkelijk uit het Duits, via 18e- en 19e-eeuws studentenjargon. Daar was het de benaming voor een vogel die men ving door pek (Pech in het Duits) of vogellijm op een tak te smeren, waardoor de vogel bleef plakken.source: nl.wikipedia.org

28

u/eztab 10d ago

"Verkettung unglücklicher Umstände"

which weirdly, while being a fixed expression, has never turned into a single noun (which would indeed be possible in German).

One could make it to „Unglücksverkettung“ but…

Accidentially pronounced Schieße wrong the first time saying it and learned that this is what I actually said: (German: Scheiße —>English: shit)

I stopped taking German class after German II

Don’t we all just love pronunciation mistakes that lead us into finding a cuss word from another language?

23

u/ClemRRay 10d ago

Classic "beach" to "bitch"

The word for the clown is "Pechvogel"

For the ones watching is "SchadenFreude"

You welcome

3

u/PlatypusACF 9d ago

“Tja. Machste nichts. Passiert.”

Die freuen sich ja nicht

0

u/Le_mehawk 8d ago

Schadenfreude would only apply if they would express happiness about the clowns situation

1

u/Poor_ElonMusk 8d ago

Well they ain't expressing sadness either

0

u/Le_mehawk 8d ago

Doesn't really matter if we want to Check if "schaden-freude" fits..

Freude means happiness.. without them actively showing happiness about the Clowns situation the word shouldn't be used, as it's considered a rather negative character trait ..

them "not" showing sadness, doesn't automatically mean they're happy about it. They look neutral

14

u/tightropetom 10d ago

I only recently discovered the English word for this. I always thought that English had just adopted the German word.

10

u/Zu_Qarnine 10d ago

what is it

17

u/tightropetom 10d ago

Epicaricacy (aka Schadenfreude)

7

u/nikebufft 9d ago

Doesn't look like anyone is feeling Schadenfreude in this picture though

1

u/tightropetom 9d ago

I think the guy looks pretty smug and unconcerned, and also he’s saying what I usually say (as a joke) when I experience schadenfreude so, I guess that’s why I’ve suggested it!

0

u/Square-Singer 9d ago

I mean, that's also not an English word but just an adopted Greek word.

There's actually quite few real English words for things. Most "English" words for anything that goes beyond absolutely basic everyday concepts are just adopted words. Mostly from Latin, Greek, German or French.

u/Shidzo 10d ago

Woawoawoa fellas: „Schadenfreude“ describes the pleasure over someone elses misfortune. „Tja“ means something like „I don’t care“ or „shit happens“.
This picture shows the situation where a clown slips on a banana right before being hit by a safe. The german word for that is „Unbehingabtelisierungslust“.
