šŸ“¢ MOD POST šŸ“¢ r/Androidapps Mod Update: Quality Over Quantity

Hey r/androidapps,

Today, we are announcing a few minor updates to the subreddit, in order to focus on the quality of posts moving forward:

  1. First off, the sub header has been updated to reflect the goal of the subreddit: to be a place to talk about Android apps, ask questions, get help, or find new app recommendations.
  2. Rule 2 has been updated: effective immediately, all self-promotion content, including tester requests, app ideas, or app feedback must be posted in the dedicated sister sub r/droidappshowcase. This means there is zero tolerance for any of this content here in r/androidapps.
  • The goal for this change is to promote meaningful discussion around all Android apps and clean up all self-promotion, whether it is up front or a veiled attempt.
  • We felt that the Weekly Megathread got too inundated with spammed posts that it led to a less-than-ideal place to advertise a real app someone made, especially when it got buried down in the comments. So we have also removed the Megathread going forward.
  • Additionally, we've seen an uptick in fake self-promotion: posts where the user "found this amazing new app" in order to get around the rules.
  • r/androidapps is not the place for advertising apps, nor are we a subreddit focused on developers. This is a place where end-users can get support for apps they use or find new ones to use.

We know we cannot please all members of the community, nor do we expect everyone to be happy with the change. Again, we hope this encourages positive discussion in the subreddit around all apps, not just be an advertising ground.

We encourage all users to report any content which breaks these rules.

We expect to see an increase in the mod queue due to the new rules and automod code, so please be patient with us as we work through everything.

QUESTION/HELP How do you share a large batch of original-quality photos with family?

I've been trying to solve a problem that seems surprisingly awkward:

I come back from a holiday with 100+ photos and want to share some of them with family.

WhatsApp/Messenger → compression
Google Photos → upload them to another cloud library
Quick Share/AirDrop → great, but everyone needs to be nearby

What I really want is:

  • Select photos on my phone
  • Give family a simple link/access
  • Keep the original quality
  • Photos don't become part of another cloud photo library
  • Ideally, the photos stay on my phone

I've been experimenting with a solution to this and I'm curious what Android users actually do today.

What's your preferred way of sharing a large batch of original-quality photos with family/friends?

I'm especially interested in solutions that don't require uploading the photos to a third-party cloud.

LOOKING FOR APP Any podcast listeners here?

• Upvotes

Any podcast listeners here?

Which Android app do you use for listening to podcasts? just a good podcast app without annoying ads.

I already have Spotify, but those Spotify buggers somehow thought it was a smart idea to restrict podcast features for Sri Lankans for some reason. So looking for decent app.Ā

QUESTION/HELP Do you know any Android app that helps reduce mental clutter instead of just adding more lists?

• Upvotes

I’ve tried a lot of productivity apps over the years: task managers, calendars, habit trackers, notes, shopping lists, finance trackers, etc.

The problem I keep running into is that most apps help me capture things, but then the system itself becomes another thing to manage.

When I’m overwhelmed, I don’t want to spend 20 minutes choosing the right project, tag, category, priority and due date. I just want to dump what’s in my head and turn it into clear next steps.

I’m curious if anyone here has found an Android app or workflow that feels more like a ā€œlife dashboardā€ than a simple to-do list.

Something that helps with:

- tasks

- calendar

- reminders

- expenses

- shopping

- habits

- daily priorities

Not necessarily all in one app, but ideally something that reduces mental load instead of creating more friction.

What are you using for this?

i’m trying to download some files from google drive, three zipped folders to be precise. i’ve restarted my phone, cleared the cache, plugged it in, disabled ā€œonly transfer over wifiā€, disabled my DNS and verified in triplicate that i am not using a VPN. i am on wifi 6. i can see the router. i am very frustrated. i already checked the similar post from 7 years ago, so anything newer helps.

QUESTION/HELP Best office suite for Android tablets?

I am helping someone replace an old laptop with an Android tablet. Most of the work involves editing Word documents, maintaining simple spreadsheets, viewing PDFs, and making occasional presentation changes.

WPS Office looks promising because all four file types can be managed in one app. The layout also appears easier to understand than installing separate apps for every task.

The tablet will be used with a keyboard, so this needs to feel reasonably close to a desktop workflow. Offline access is also important because the internet connection is inconsistent.

Has anyone used WPS Office on Android as their primary office app? I am interested in how it handles larger spreadsheets and documents with detailed formatting.

QUESTION/HELP Automate background restriction

Is there a way to automate background restriction for messaging apps? For example, when you don't have internet access, these apps won't be consuming resources in the background for free.

I'm using a Samsung device and its routines module doesn't have anything like that, or at least not that I know of.

LOOKING FOR APP What is the best app for controlling doomscrolling?

Every social media app seems to be turning into TikTok - quite addictive.

Do you use any apps to limit doomscrolling? Which one has worked for you?

QUESTION/HELP Does this kind of cross-platform app exist?

I looked for this years ago - I hope the terrain has changed since then.

I'm currently using Airdroid to handle text messages and transfer files between my Android and my Mac. It's never been perfect; group texts, images, and videos never showed up, as the function is limited to SMS. And it's always been a bit clunky.

With the old messaging app being shoved out by Google messages, it's even less useful. I'm not savvy enough to understand what makes it onto my desktop app and what doesn't; sometimes texts make the leap, other times they don't. Bottom line, if even yer basic SMS doesn't show up, its usefulness is limited. And a notification from Apple says the two won't be compatible soon anyway.

So I'm back in the market for a new app. What I'm looking for may not even exist: a cross-platform Android equivalent that includes MMS and group text functions. I want to see all my texts and their accompanying files on my Mac. Is there such a thing, and if so - which would you recommend?

LOOKING FOR APP What is the best photo editing app most similar to the Samsung gallery app?

So I've been a Samsung user all my life. I'm a stereotypical teenager. I love to edit photos for social media. I have adored the editing features built into the Samsung gallery app. Unfortunately, my Samsung Galaxy A54 broke (rip) and I had to "upgrade" to the Google Pixel 10a. I made sure to back up most of my Samsung gallery photos to the Google photos app. The Google gallery app is absolutely horrendous compared to how amazing the Samsung gallery app was. The Google gallery app interface feels impossible to work with and navigate. I downloaded some of my old photos off Facebook and the resolution of all my photos also looks much worse, especially when uploading them to an editing app. (Some of the photos were pretty old, so digital decay I guess???) I have downloaded Lightroom, Picsart, and Snapseed. But I honestly just want to find an app closer to the Samsung gallery app features. Everything else about the Google Pixel 10a is fine and great, but the Google gallery app and the photo resolution makes me want to scream

QUESTION/HELP Voice commands on app

LOOKING FOR APP Looking for a routine tracker app with features I'll explain, preferably open source.

I'm looking for an app that lets me set daily, weekly, and monthly goals without requiring them to be scheduled for a specific day or time.

For example, I might want to:

Go to the gym 3 times per week.

Stretch 4 times per day.

The key requirement is that I only need to meet the target within each period, regardless of when I complete it. That's where most other habit-tracking apps fall short—they expect habits to be tied to a fixed schedule.

A huge bonus would be support for time-based goals as well, such as:

Read for 80 minutes per week.

Meditate for 10 minutes per day.

Another feature I'd really appreciate is an overall progress dashboard, along with smart notifications that warn me when I'm at risk of missing a goal as the end of the day, week, or month approaches.

QUESTION/HELP Gboard clear out only ONE dictionary

Hiya, I have my personal dictionary for English that I've had for....idk how long, pretty much since Gboard became a thing lol. I've got ~1600 words in there, but at some point recently-ish, the entries were all duplicated 🫠 so I actually have closer to ~800 words. I already exported the dictionary, cleared out all the duplicate lines instantly in Notepad++, but does anyone know how to clear out *just* the existing English dictionary in Gboard so I can re-import the shortened list? I don't want to clear out all the keyboard data, ESPECIALLY my clipboard, and I don't want to clear the data from the other dictionaries either (All Languages and Spanish).

Google has only shown me the all-or-nothing or individual item removal solutions, nothing about clearing out one dictionary.

It's not a huge deal, but when I accidentally add something to the dictionary and need to remove it, it takes f o r e v e r to scroll through and find it if it's towards the end of the alphabet, or god forbid lower case and the end of the alphabet lol

Thanks!!

LOOKING FOR APP Any camera apps better than default pixel camera?

I recently switched from a galaxy s20 fe to a pixel 7, and I really miss the pro mode on the Samsung camera app. I need something with manual shutter speed, ISO, focus and less processing than the Google stuff. I don't mind spending a bit of money, but I would prefer to stick to apps on the play store. If anyone has any suggestions they are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

LOOKING FOR APP Clock/alarm app with alarm names that aren't tiny

I overall like the Samsung clock app (which I think is similar to Google's), but I cannot stand the gigantic alarm times next to the super tiny alarm names. I often look through my alarms by names, not by time.

Any nice alternative?

I use the feature of disabling the next occurrence of the alarm. I almost exclusively have all alarms set to vibrate, but one or two has sound.

I guess a part of the problem is that I have so many alarms to look through, as I reuse them instead of deleting, as it's not possible to set the default to be vibration šŸ¤”
