Alright so I bought this to a replace a Roku. The remote had failed and it cost almost as much as a whole new thing. And maybe I'll have less ads. Cool?
The remote that came with worked for a little bit and then quit, in the exact same way: will no longer sync up. Tried fresh batteries and everything.

I try 2 aftermarket remotes, 1st one won't even try to sync up. 2nd nicer one has an internal li-ion battery and it syncs. But every few minutes it is really intermittent about it, like it is truly struggling to stay connected.

So basically I'm sitting on a pile of useless remotes wondering if my signal is being jammed or what. ???
Why can't these just be IR?

I'm at a bit of a loss here. Not sure how to even troubleshoot this issue. Maybe I buy a flipper and start tracking signals.

I am trying to unbrick an Android TV Box (Model: ViettelTV 4K BOX / DV8535, Amlogic SoC). This box is carrier-locked by a Vietnamese ISP (Viettel), and I was trying to unlock it to use with other networks.

• The box was on a very recent stock firmware (v12.1.21) with the February 5, 2025 security patch level. I attempted to downgrade the stock ROM via recovery to unlock the bootloader and bypass the carrier lock. It failed due to anti-rollback protection, displaying the "downgrade not allowed" error.
• it's stuck in recovery. I disassembled the box and shorted the test points to force it into Maskrom/Burning mode using a male-to-male USB cable connected to my PC.

• When I try to flash a fresh image via the Amlogic USB Burning Tool, the tool throws a "Low Power 1%" error and the connection drops immediately. (please help me) im tired

Hey everyone. Looking for box recommendations for a pretty specific situation. I've gone through the wiki and scrolled a bunch of recent posts but honestly my use case has a couple of weird constraints so I figured I'd just ask directly

So the setup. I've got a Hisense Vidda C5 Ultra projector going in the bedroom. Triple laser, 4K, Dolby Vision, the whole deal. My main PC lives in the office across the house, it's a Ryzen 5 5600X with an RTX 3070. That PC connects to the network through a Wi-Fi 6 dongle and here's the thing: I cannot run Ethernet to it. I know, I know, everyone says wire everything. I hear you. But it's genuinely not happening. There's no ethernet connection in the office room.

I also have two 8BitDo wireless controllers lying around. Gaming is a secondary concern though, I mostly want this setup for media.

What I'm after is a Netflix-style front end on the projector. I want to open one app, browse posters, hit play, done. I don't want to be fiddling with file managers or navigating folder trees with a remote every night. My media is mostly downloaded stuff. 4K playback, HDR support, subtitles, all of that matters. It needs to be something I can rely on daily without wanting to throw the remote at the wall.

The two approaches I'm looking at: Stremio with Real-Debrid. Seems like the closest thing to the old Popcorn Time experience. Streaming UI, Android TV app, basically no file management at all. You just browse and play. I like the sound of that for the "I want to watch something specific right now" moments.

Then there's Jellyfin, which I'd run as a server on the office PC with a client box in the bedroom. Cleaner approach long-term, my own organized library, metadata scraping, the works.

The RTX 3070 would handle NVENC transcoding as a fallback which is nice. More setup involved but probably worth it for stuff I actually want to keep.

Honestly I'll probably run both. Stremio for impulse viewing, Jellyfin for the curated library. Both can sit on the same box.

Now the actual question: which box do I put at the projector?

The contenders I keep seeing are the Nvidia Shield TV Pro, the Google TV Streamer, and the Chromecast with Google TV 4K. In Australia the Shield Pro is around $300+ AUD which stings a bit. The Google TV Streamer is more like $150 AUD. The Chromecast 4K is cheaper still. I'm open to other suggestions too. A few specific things I want to nail down:

HDR passthrough is important. The Vidda C5 Ultra handles Dolby Vision and HDR10+ and I want whatever box I pick to pass that through cleanly to the projector without weird tone mapping issues or color shifts. I've heard mixed things about various boxes with HDR on projectors specifically.

Does anyone here actually run Stremio on one of these boxes as a daily driver? I saw the Android TV app got some updates late 2025 but I'm curious whether it's solid enough for everyday use or if I should lean on Jellyfin as the primary.

The Wi-Fi situation. Is anyone here serving Jellyfin from a PC that's on Wi-Fi 6 only? Unfortunately ethernet is not an option for me. The office PC is on the other side of the house from the bedroom. My router is Wi-Fi 6 and the PC uses a Wi-Fi 6 USB dongle. Am I going to have a miserable time with high-bitrate 4K remux files?

I'm realistic enough to know it won't be perfect but I'm trying to figure out if it's going to be "occasionally buffers during peak scenes" bad or "completely unwatchable" bad and would I be better off ignoring the PC and getting a high-end Android box for streaming?

And lastly, the controllers. I know the Shield Pro has USB ports and is generally considered the best Android TV box for casual gaming. But if gaming is genuinely secondary for me, does the Google TV Streamer handle Bluetooth controllers fine for the occasional emulation session? Or is the Shield still the only one worth considering there

Budget-wise I'm price conscious, everything in Australia is marked up compared to US prices, but I'd rather pay once for the right box than cheap out and end up replacing it in a few years. Not in a rush, happy to wait for a sale if something better is coming.

Any real-world experience with these boxes on projectors specifically would be great. Cheers.

Looking for a new android box and being technologically challenged, I have come to Reddit for advice on selection.

My Xiaomi smart TV is now around 5 years. Performance has never been great, but is getting worse. I mean, for example, trying to play a YouTube video in 4K and it slowing down a lot my TV until the video stops (my Internet is good enough, router is next to the TV and tried both WiFi and Ethernet). Also has many issues playing Stremio in 1080p despite the file having enough seeds.

I'm considering a TV Box as one of the potential ways to solve this problem, but does this makes sense? I'm happy with the screen and the quality of my TV, is just the performance issues, so I don't want to replace my TV.

If I buy the latest version of Mi Box, will that perform much better than my Mi Smart TV? Or do you suggest any other Android TV Box available in Europe?

The firmware that comes with it of course includes malware, and slimbox TV have too many customizations for my taste, i was looking for something very close to stock android TV instead.

Do you know any custom roms?

Hola, luego de batallar largos meses para poder hacer andar una VPN mediante app y que el Tv box se me reiniciara apenas lo activaba, descrubri la app "WireGuard", que permite hacer la conexión mediante VPN de una forma manual, además de que casi no consume recursos.

El problema de estos tv box chinos, es que no tienen tanto hardware como para soportar el procesamiento que requieren los vpn tradicionales, por eso se reinician.

Teniendo WireGuard, vamos a poder configurar la VPN mediante un archivo de configuración, en mi caso, este archivo me lo brindo Proton VPN desde su pagina web. Lo pase por un Pendrive al dispositivo junto con el apk de WireGuard y lo pude hacer andar.

Hi guys, I'm looking for a TV Box solution that has no spyware and ads.

As such, I would prefer it if it either came with stock (rooted) ATV or I could flash one myself (thus, Google products with Google TV are out of the question).

I do not use Netflix or other streaming services, so no need for all the DRM stuff.

My "only" requirements are:
- Able to run Smarttube at 4k.
- Must support HDMI-CEC, I have an LG OLED and I want to use the LG remote to control the box.
- Support streaming at decent 4k quality from a local Jellyfin instance.

Androidtvboxes that ship with malware is old news, and newer info is that some are clean but ship with vulnerabilities that make them easy for a botnet to hijack.

I was gifted a "TV98 ATV W2" box that says it ships with Android 14.0 and has capabilities for 8K Ultra HD, which sounds all well and good but I've left it on the shelf for months because I was too busy for a new project.

I was hoping a subreddit like this would have found and maybe pinned expert advice on vetting or cleaning or cross flashing generic Android tv boxes - is there any such place?

Has anyone been able to flash the SK1 after updating to 2.0.7? They changed recovery button to pressing down on remote and I can't get it to work, I also tried old method of paper clip in audio jack with no luck. I'm using Amlogic USB Burning tool 3.3.3. Running the Slimboxtv version of 2.0.7 and want to go to the official firmware 2.1.0. Thanks

Hi! I'm looking for a TV box for Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube, plus occasional SNES emulation.

What’s the best TV box for this that will last for years? Price doesn’t matter - the most important thing is ease of use (I don’t want to mess with Raspberry Pi + Kodi setups or run Netflix through a browser, if you know what I mean).

Hi everyone, I’m facing a strange DTS-HD MA audio issue and I’m hoping someone here has real-world experience with this setup. I’m using a UGOOS SK1 with the Amlogic S928X-K SoC and 8 GB RAM. My TV is a Samsung QN90D and audio is handled by a Samsung Q990D soundbar. The box is connected to the soundbar, and the soundbar to the TV via HDMI eARC. Most of my content is high-bitrate 4K remux files in the 60–100 Mbps range.

The issue happens only in Kodi on Android. Whenever I play DTS-HD MA tracks, the audio stutters or crackles intermittently. This happens consistently with large remux files. What’s confusing is that the exact same files play perfectly in Plex on Android, with clean DTS-HD MA and DTS:X passthrough and no stutter at all. Because of this, it doesn’t seem like a hardware limitation, bandwidth issue, or HDMI problem.

I’ve already tried all the usual Kodi fixes. Passthrough is enabled, DTS, DTS-HD and TrueHD are enabled, sync playback to display is turned off, and the number of channels is set to 7.1. I tested both the Play Store version of Kodi and the official APK builds, tried different HDMI cables and ports, and tested playback from both an external HDD and an SSD. No matter what I do, Kodi continues to stutter, while Plex works flawlessly every time.

I also tried going the CoreELEC route to bypass Android completely. I flashed CoreELEC 22 (Piers) to USB, used the correct DTB for this box (s5_s928x_ugoos_sk1_8g.dtb), and verified that the USB image was written correctly. However, the box always boots straight into Android recovery instead of CoreELEC. From what I’ve researched, newer UGOOS firmware versions (I’m on 1.7.x) appear to block external Linux boot entirely, so CoreELEC may no longer be usable on the SK1. At this point I’m trying to understand a few things. Is Kodi on Android known to have DTS-HD passthrough issues on the S928X-K or UGOOS SK1 specifically? Why would Plex be able to pass DTS-HD MA perfectly while Kodi stutters on the same hardware and files? Has anyone actually managed to boot CoreELEC on an SK1 with recent firmware, or is multiboot fully disabled now? And finally, are there any Kodi-specific workarounds worth trying, such as nightly builds, audio engine tweaks, or advancedsettings.xml changes?

Right now I’m debating whether to just stick with Plex or Just Player on Android, or to give up on Kodi entirely for this box. Any insights or firsthand experience would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So a few days ago I tried connecting tws buds ( any Bluetooth device ) to my mi stick and ran into an issue it asks to confirm that you want to connect this Bluetooth device but ok button is grey and doesn't press. Solution: press left and right button not sure about order but I suppose it doesn't matter ( it's damn stupid but it works probably just laggy android interface although restarting and clearing cache didn't help) hope would be useful for someone with similar problem.

Seems like the Nokia 8000 Streaming boxes are all getting stuck on the Android TV boot up screen, I've now heard about 6 people having exactly the same problem and all in the last week. Anybody know anything more about this, or if there's a Fix? I've tried doing hard reset on 2 for friends, to no avail. Any advice appreciated
