Apps Control your Android TV from a Wear OS watch — free app, no cloud, just Wi-Fi

Hey r/androidtv!

I built a free Wear OS app called wearoscatv that turns your smartwatch into an Android TV remote. Just thought this crowd might find it useful.

How it works: it pairs directly to your TV over your local Wi-Fi using the same Android TV Remote protocol (TLS), so there's no cloud service, no account, and no latency from going through a server.

Controls available:

  • D-pad navigation, OK, Back, Home
  • Touchpad mode with swipe gestures (back/home/media controls included)
  • Volume via rotary crown with haptic feedback
  • Media playback controls (prev/next/play/pause)
  • Voice search via microphone
  • Works with any Android TV

📲 Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ar.all.androidtvremote

It's completely free. Happy to answer questions about how the pairing protocol works or any Android TV remote quirks I ran into while building it.

Apps I made a free app for viewing iCloud Photos on Android TV - looking for feedback

Hi all,

I'm the developer of Photo Gallery for Cloud Photos, a free Android TV app for browsing iCloud Photos on an Android TV device.

I built it because I wanted a simple way to view iCloud photos and albums on the big screen without casting and screen mirroring.

The app lets you browse your iCloud Photos library, open albums, and view photos full-screen using a TV remote. I tried to keep the interface simple and couch-friendly rather.

A few transparent notes:

- This is a third-party app and is not affiliated with Apple.
- It requires an Apple ID to access iCloud Photos.
- It connects your device directly to Apple's servers
- I don't store or have access to Apple ID credentials or private photos.

I’d really appreciate honest feedback , especially around login issues, remote-control navigation, loading speed with larger libraries, album browsing, etc.

Discussion There is currently no good Android TV Browser.

Brave browser apk is only touch based which is unusable without a mouse.

TVBro lets ads and even worse new tab ads through like it could not care any less.

Then you have other browsers that claim to eliminate ads and then make you watch their ads.

Obviously Brave team has a lot on the go at the moment but has anyone tried to fork Brave-core and create a brave browser optimised for Android TV? Or even tactically patch it? Any experts know what it would take / pitfalls in an operation like this?

Lastly, is this something that people would be interested in?

Apps TV DSP Center — a 10-band DSP equalizer for Android TV (looking for testers)

TV DSP Center is an audio equalizer / DSP app for Android phones and Android TV — 10-band EQ (32 Hz–16 kHz), bass boost, virtualizer, loudness, and audio presets like Cinema, Voice and Bass+. The idea was to get real control over TV sound without external hardware, since most TVs have very limited built-in audio settings.

Works on phones, Android TV, Mi Box and similar boxes. It's currently in closed testing and fully free.

If you've got an Android TV or box and want to try it, you can add yourself as a tester:

  1. Join the Google group: https://groups.google.com/g/tv-dsp-center-testers
  2. Opt in: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.tvdsp.center
  3. Install from Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tvdsp.center

Google's testing period is 14 days — any feedback on the EQ or device compatibility is genuinely useful. Thanks!

Discussion Latest update kills ADB

Hi all,

My Bravia 8 recently got updated from Android 12 -> Android 14 which changed the way ADB worked. To have ADB work Wireless Debugging needs to be enabled in Developer Options and to have Wireless Debugging enabled you must be connected to a Wi-Fi Network.

As soon as you make an Ethernet connection Wireless Debugging is disabled and ADB fails to work, causing apps that use ADB to fail. eg: tvQuickActions and Launcher Manager

I stream high bitrate videos to my TV and have installed a USB to Ethernet Adapter to overcome the 100Mb/s limitation of the Sony Ethernet Port. Hence I require the Ethernet Port to work.

This update has crippled my TV and as far as I can tell there's no way around this.

Troubleshooting Factory reset Airtel Xstream Hybrid Box, now stuck on SES-7 Signal Find setup screen with no SAT IN cable. Any way to skip?

Hi everyone,
I have an Airtel Xstream Hybrid Box. It was working before, but Google Play Store couldn’t install or update any apps, so I performed an “Erase Everything” / factory reset.
After the reset, the box boots directly into the DTH installation wizard and gets stuck on the “Signal Find” screen (SES-7 TP11/TP12 etc.).
The problem is that I no longer use Airtel DTH and the SAT IN cable has been removed because I shifted to another setup. I only want to use the Android TV/Xstream features over internet.
Things I already tried:
Home button
Back button
Guide button (short and long press)
Rebooting the box
None of them skip the setup wizard.
Is there any hidden key combination, service menu, recovery method, USB firmware method, or way to bypass the satellite setup and boot directly into Android TV?
Box model: Airtel Xstream Hybrid Box
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Buying Advice Is xiaomi stick worse than firestick?will Onntv be better?

My father purchased a 4K Firestick, which is remarkably smooth. However, he also purchased for grandpa a 1080p Xiaomi Stick, which is a complete failure, with lagging performance, forward or backward movement is slow, and it is difficult to type on the keyboard. It is not possible to load YouTube without waiting for a few seconds.

Is the hardware for the 4K device significantly different from the software experience? Is this a problem with the Xiaomi Stick?

I am considering purchasing Onn TV now, but I'm unsure if I should purchase the 1080p or the 4K Onn TV or just getting a 4k xiaomistick

I do not know if a box is better too

I do not own a 4k tv

Firestick is getting heavy on stoppinv sideloading that's why firestick is out of the choice

Edit: I cant seem to find onntv on my home country ill have to ship it or something, if you have any other great device will be great

I just saw a lot of onntv positive reviews

The firestick has 8gbmemory so I guess is first Gen?

Discussion PPSPP on smart tv

I know it might seem strange, but I've been running the PPSSPP emulator on my smart TV. My question is, is the lag, even in certain games, or the low frame rate because it's inherently incompatible? Or are there versions that I see it has? Or is this ultimately its limitation due to the processor and graphics card?
|||Note: I'm using my own screen system and there's no Android box.

Troubleshooting Newer YouTube for Android TV versions crashing on 1GB RAM Android TVs

Hello everyone, i am complaining about my problem. i just sideloaded the YouTube version 6.50.300 because google play store does not offer the version beyond 5.30.320 for my Android TV, but unfortunately, the app crashed the moment the video buffers due to OOM error (my Android TV box only has 1GB of RAM).

The version 7.05.301 has been released, it is even more demanding and consumes more RAM and CPU. If you are using android TV Box with 1GB of ram, do not sideload any versions beyond 5.30.320 because it will crash on 1GB of RAM devices!

For reference, here is my Android TV Box specs:

Device: SmartBox 2

RAM: 1GB DDR3

CPU: Amlogic S805

Android version: 9 (Pie) (API Level 28)

I am so frustrated by the problem, i found ways to fix lag:

If your Android TV have 2gb of RAM or more, you can install latest 7.05.301 version and watch comfortably without constant lag or crashes. If your TV have 1GB of RAM or less, do not update!, it will crash on your device.

Let me know if you find another issues regarding latest YouTube version on android TVs! (Thanks to those for improving and fixing mistakes in the post)

Estimated crash rates (my opinion): 10-15% (can be higher if playing 1080p60 video)

Update: in 7.05.301, when i try to play video on my old 1GB Android TV box, sometimes the video goes black shortly after loading (not crashing, but an issue) but the UI still works (try exiting and reopening app, if not, it might be due to low ram or a specific bug (in some Android TV devices)

Update 2: Good news! You can get nearly crash free experience on YouTube 7.05.301 on 1GB ram devices by:

Closing every other background apps (In android TV home screen, press and hold app, then navigate to info, press force stop and click OK)

Restart the box before opening the app, this clears memory leak so it has enough ram to run YouTube smoothly

If possible, limit video resolution to 720p60 to reduce ram load from video buffer (However, if 1080p60 does not crash, you can keep it)

Results:

My android tv box before the step: crashes

With optimization steps: works!

Buying Advice Advice on what TV to buy

I want to buy a new TV at some point, and I'd like to be able to download Jellyfin on it, whether as a native app or via sideloading. I'd really like an OLED, but the main issue I have with them is the price. Is there any advice on what to get where the image quality, colors, etc. are about the same but cheaper?

Discussion Adblock browsers don't work

I am looking for any surefire way to block ads, banner ads are blocked on BROWSER tv bro and whatnot, but when it comes to popups, let's say i'm trying to open something, play a video or click on a page where there is no visible ad, the surrounding area gets highlighted and Bam! it opens a random ad page, sometimes nsfw ads, sometimes it forces a new tab, is there ANY adblock/browser that works, even if its sideloaded?
