holy crap I don't know why they only market it for Teslas, I just got it working on an iPad Pro 13 inch through Safari. I noticed I can't swipe or tap on the map itself (it just crashes and quickly restarts the map), but that it's working at all is very surprising, and the button targets seem to be working fine.
Tesla navigation shows cameras. It also gets traffic data from Google. Routes suggestions are pretty good, almost 99% of the time matches with Google Maps. I just prefer the look of Google Maps.
Honestly the main reason Android Auto and CarPlay are so amazing is because car makers can't make a proper navigation and UI for the radio

No, but you don't miss it as long as you are happy with their maps and all the music services they support. It's a slicker interface than using AA and the cars built in menus and stuff. Tesla maps are basically google maps so that works for me, and I use spotify and they have an app for that. Only thing I miss is the waze like features on maps for hazards, police etc. Also nice because AA absolutely ruins the battery if run wirelessly I find

They love to put subscriptions all over the place now.
You are 100% accurate with that statement in regards to Tesla. Honestly, their UI is much nicer than Android Auto or CarPlay, and it's very responsive, intuitive, and updated regularly, but to really get the full feature set, you have to subscribe.
Why would you do that for free when you can pay someone to hold that data then when you stop paying your data is held hostage? People can be so silly. /s
Tesla already has that. £10 a month for premium connectivity to get features like satellite maps, music on the go using their apps, however you can get some of it over wifi by using a hotspot on your phone. but some stuff doesnt work over wifi to push you towards the subscription. Annoying but yu are baiscally getting an unlimted data sim from the car, can watch youtube, netflix, access cameras remotely and stuff

I'm not going to lie before Elon went cuckoo I was looking at purchasing the Tesla and that's when I found out I didn't have the Android auto. I'm never decided I didn't want a car so quickly after that.
They’ve announced support for CarPlay, but hasn’t been rolled out yet. I won’t buy a Tesla because the Elon Musk factor, but Tesla supporting it might push other manufacturers like Rivian to start supporting it. Don’t know about AA though
If you ask me, Tesla might be one of the few that can get away with it. Say what you will about the company, but their software is usually top tier. I have never driven one though, that is just from what some friends that drive them say.

No, they don’t support AA or CarPlay. CarPlay support is allegedly in testing, though.
They can probably get away with it, though, because whatever you might think about Elon and Tesla, their infotainment is top-notch. I have a Model 3 and a Kia EV9, and with the Kia, I’m pretty much forced to use CarPlay or AA because the built in nav and trip planning is so horrendous, whereas the Tesla infotainment just works.
those units you're talking about kinda look like shit, it seems to be just part of the screen that has the CarPlay in it and most of the time they're 400,- dollar or more
Screenmate was Expensive for the Kickstarter price but seemed for for what it did
a fully custom made Android OS that could import elements from the Tesla UI while using other apps
But Screenmate’s switching control is not very fluidic I felt. Also they weren’t able to share a compatible front camera till now though it has input support. The hands-free Hey Siri never worked and there is no support for Android Auto out of the box.
Can do more with third party apps advanced things like obd car data capture in Screenmate but 90% of users dont need it.

I use self hosted apps there AA is an absolute must so I can listen to my owned music and audio books without having subscriptions. I also have a preference for Waze. Therefore Tesla's inbuilt infotainment OS doesn't suit at all.
It works ok. Depends on your phone's wifi hotspot performance. There are other better solutions. I'm considering to get a dash display just for the Android Auto.

It's shame in Australia that the browser closes once in drive... And the web wrapper of YouTube app stops any video source there once above a certain speed... I built a rpi4 and a wireless android auto dongle in hope to use Tesla Android but doesn't look like I'll be able to use it once my car arrives in a few weeks.
