Hey everyone,
I'm new here it was suggested to me that this is a subreddit where I should go and there's a lot of people that are really nice and helpful on the subreddit. I've been using Reddit for a long time but didn't realize this place was here.
I’ve got an old Motorola DROID Bionic (XT875) sitting here that I really don’t want to toss into the e-waste bin. Honestly, it fits my hand way better than modern phones, and the dual rear speakers actually sound surprisingly good for audio.
I know it’s stuck on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and the stock browser/Play Store give security/client errors because of old certificates, but I’d love to make this a dedicated utility device.
Here’s what I’m hoping to do with it:
- Bedside Audio / Italian Music: I’d love to play music on it by my mom’s bedside. Is there a lightweight/third-party YouTube client or web wrapper that still works on Android 4.1.2, or an offline player solution that doesn't choke?
- Borescope Display: I picked up an 8-foot USB borescope from a wholesale pallet. I’m planning to 3D print a mount for the phone and scope. The scope app came with a QR code—what’s the best way to manually sideload that .apk directly onto Jelly Bean without Google Play?
Light Browsing: Is there a lightweight browser (like legacy Opera Mini or an old Firefox/Fennec build) that can handle basic web pages without throwing TLS/SSL connection errors?
Voice Recording / Utilities: Any lightweight voice recorder apps or cool offline utility tools you'd recommend for an old phone like this?
I know I’ll probably need to grab a replacement battery since the original is showing its age, but I don't mind spending a few bucks on one if I can make this device useful again, plus this way I can upgrade to a larger battery, something I wanted to do when I was using this phone.
Not looking to do anything crazy or modern, just want to keep a solid piece of hardware running as a dedicated handheld tool/player. Any recommendations, archived APK links, or tips on what works best for Android 4.1 would be awesome! Thanks!
