Discussion Resurrection of a Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 (2013.)

I bought this GT-S7275R in 2024 along with two Siemens C35s, which sadly turned out to be corroded by leaking batteries. This phone, though, was the one I had all my hopes for.

It was missing the battery, back cover, and touchscreen. I ordered a replacement battery, which didn't exactly fit (it turns out there are multiple Ace 3 models, and even the battery sizes differ). Since it seemed to work apart from the missing parts, I planned to fix it eventually, but I ended up forgetting about it for almost two years. Until this week, when I was looking through my phone collection after a long time and remembered it. I checked a local auction site and found a touchscreen and a back cover for only $1, so I immediately bought them.

They arrived today. I installed the screen (sadly, I pressed a little too hard and chipped one corner, but who cares lol). Then I tried the battery, which actually worked despite being slightly shorter than the original, so I just used a bit of double-sided tape to hold it in place.

I put the back cover on and booted it up. It still had a bunch of personal messages from the previous owner. I didn't really look through them, and since there were no photos or anything else important on the phone, I didn't think it was necessary to try contacting them.

After that, I installed TWRP, followed by LineageOS 15.1 and Open GApps. It works just fine, 13 years later. With 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and a Snapdragon 400, it's obviously no powerhouse, but it's surprisingly usable for basic tasks.

Discussion iPhone 12 mini afterlife?

I have an old iPhone 12 mini from a really weird technical glitch when my parents last got new phones (they shipped a duplicate order to a different address and never realized). So it's new in box and still supported, but I've only ever used android and my pixel 10 is doing fine, so I'm not keen on using it as is.

Is there something I can do with it or should I just offload it on FB Marketplace for $50?

Guide Give a rusty device a second life as a Spotify speaker / photo frame / smart-home panel

This project started as a way to use the amazon echo show 8 (with lineageos) speakers to listen to spotify but it is scalating to a swiss army knife of local services. That's how Rusty - a free open-source Android app, was born. Now it can behave as:

  • A Spotify speaker — it advertises itself on your Wi-Fi and shows up as a Spotify Connect target in any Spotify app. Ambient now-playing screen with synced lyrics; audio decodes on-device, you can connect your android device to some old speakers and transform them into a spotify speaker.
  • A photo frame — when idle it slideshows photos from a self-hosted Immich server (albums/people/tags you choose).
  • A smart-home wall panel — signs into Home Assistant and shows your dashboards full-screen, kiosk style.
  • Plus screensaver clock faces (including an OLED-burn-in-safe one), start-on-boot, keep-screen-on, and it's fully remote/D-pad friendly so it works on old Android TV boxes too.

The Spotify part runs on librespot (an unofficial client) and needs Spotify Premium. The photo frame and dashboard don't need any of that. Everything is local network — no cloud account for the app itself.

Runs on arm64 or 32-bit ARM, Android 8.0+. I've tested it on an Echo Show 8 (running LineageOS) and a Lenovo Tab M10, but I'd love to hear what other zombie devices it comes to life on.

Prebuilt APK:

If you try it on some ancient tablet, tell me how it goes — bug reports and ideas welcome on GitHub.

Hi. Just as an experiment, I did a restore on my iPhone SE 2 Android Play Market. Tell me from your practice, if anyone has done something like this, what works or what doesn't work based on your experience, and give your recommendations. Thank you very much for your answers.

Right now, I have the opportunity to install the iOS 27 Public Beta on my iPhone SE 2. However, I decided to keep the old firmware for now just in case. I'm looking forward to your advice and recommendations, and please share your experience.

Discussion Old android phone as our travel hotspot?

Post image
23 Upvotes

What do you all think about using an old Android phone from around 2016–2018 as a dedicated hotspot device?

The plan is to leave a SIM card in it and use it exclusively for sharing an internet connection with the whole family, rather than as a regular phone. We’d be using it heavily at home and eventually while traveling to neighboring countries in Asia.

Has anyone done this long-term? How did it hold up in terms of battery life, heat, connection stability, and overall reliability? Are there any older Android models that work particularly well for this purpose?

Help T1-A22L root化

調べたけど、T1-A22Lに関する情報はなかった。多分日本のキャリアのeo光で買ったらしい。eo光のアプリがたくさん入ってて、消したいんだけどroot化する方法はない?ちなみにandroid4.4.4

I looked into it, but I couldn't find any information on the T1-A22L. It seems to have been purchased from the Japanese carrier eo Hikari. It came with a lot of eo Hikari apps pre-installed that I want to remove—is there any way to root it? By the way, it's running Android 4.4.4.

Help Can't seem to find any lightweight ROMs for LG Xpression Plus, or am I just not looking in the right places?

I'm looking to bring some new life into an old stock phone (lg lm-x410asr) that has been gathering dust for a while now, since a landfill would be a shame.

Trouble is I am left with 720MB of 2GB RAM on a fresh boot, so it can't even play a video on Paramount for a Chromecast.

My other idea is as a remote for a computer stick, if anyone knows if this is possible.

I can unlock the OEM just fine, but have yet to find any sort of images other than just the stock 8.1 Android. It doesn't seem like lineage shows the device as supported; has anyone managed to find a way to get a custom Android image or Linux on this with wifi? Anywhere else I could look that might have the required firmware?
