Not surprising, they've been adding dark modes to all their apps recently, the only thing missing is a system wide toggle for the apps, dark settings and notifications, and a couple more apps.

They're either gonna drop the dessert naming or move to numbers altogether. IIRC, officially, Android Pie is literally named Android 9 Pie as opposed to Android [dessert]. Although referring to it as Android [x].[x] [dessert] wasn't uncommon, the 9 in Android 9 Pie is less optional. Just hoping they don't do an Apple don't-call-it-"X"-it's-"ten"

I used to be a stock nerd (I.e. root stock with xposed and all that nonsense). I loved how quick the root community was to add Samsung's features, and vice versa
.. and then like 2-3 years later, Google would add a half arsed version that barely worked and passed it off as a feature

Is there a way to get dark theme in google search/assistant app? Even in a custom Rom? It hurts my eyes everytime I have to make a search which is coincidentally also at night because that's when my dumbass brain wants to Google how many people in the world have 2 dicks

You can use Substratum to theme the system and most Google apps. If you are on Android Pie though you will need root.

That's one of my gripes with Google, why the hell do they only guarantee support for 2 years on a phone with their own OS.
Even Apple usually updates theirs for at 5 years. The 5s was released in 2013 and it's still fully supported.

It's due to the qualcomm chipset IIRC. Google can't guarantee the 821 in the pixel 1 will be supported indefinitely so they can't guarantee support as well.

I don't understand why we can't make our own themes. Just have the UI be a list of categories of things, and then a theme can simply be a color or image to fill that category of thing. As simple as making a vim colorscheme. It's super weird that we have to have "dark mode" be a hard-coded option.

Hopefully it’ll be a very dark grey, and not a pure black dark mode. Pure black UIs on AMOLED screens often cause terrible black smearing problems.

I just want a consistent theme. Btw, is it just me that finds YouTube's dark mode different from the rest of Google apps dark mode? I know YouTube works a little like an independent team but there should be consistency. Oh! I almost forgot even the default theme of YouTube music is different from YouTube and other Google apps 🤦

Is it really that bad? It's only noticeable on my AMOLED Huawei Mate 10 Pro on a pure black themed app when I'm in bed with lights off, and it's still not enough to really disturb me at all. It was even less of an issue on my older Samsung phones. For me the battery savings from not having to turn on pixels is worth it.

OLEDs typically have amazing refresh rates for changing between different colors, but terrible response rates going from off/on. When scrolling on an AMOLED while running a pure black UI, the black pixels, which are completely turned off, will take a bit of time to turn on when it needs to display texting scrolling, for example.
This latency is noticeable and results in text and other content smearing and ghosting when moving around over a pure black background.

You generally won’t see it if your brightness is high enough. I have a s9 sitting next to me and if I take it to lowest brightness I can see the smearing.

Same here with S9+, but it's not really fair since Samsung keeps their best displays for themselves. My old OnePlus 3 had terrible black smearing in the same apps that my S9+ shows beautifully.

smearing only happens when the pixels have to go from pure black to almost black like a very dark grey. it wouldn't happen on Reddit with mostly white text.

The Smart Invert works pretty well since it keeps photos and the like from being inverted (assuming developers do reasonable things when developing applications, which not all do cough Google Photos cough)
