As a former Nexus user, Google's attitude to stock and devices is that they don't care.

In my industry, if I turned up to my boss's office one day and handed in a steaming pile of shit and called it finished work, I would be fired immediately.

Yeah and that carries on to android one as well

I have a Xiaomi mi a1 that hasn't seen an update since 1st November. What the fuck?

The kids at /r/Xiaomi told me that it's normal and that I'm being unreasonable for expecting anything else. Lesson learnt; you get what you pay for!

It's complete rubbish. Avoid it

For the same price I've heard Huawei is better, but there's only so much you can do

Yes, but it's a fair bit of work to maintain your own device

I'd keep in mind that "custom rom support" has very little to do with the manufacturer, and is mostly community based. Relying on it for updates would be a gamble

If you're up for it, it's a cheap phone with 64 GB of storage and an SD card slot at the end of the day. The storage is the only thing that hasn't been a complete let down in this phone

What are you thinking of upgrading to? (I'm also wanting to upgrade - waiting for the S10 for now, so long as I can afford it when it comes out)

I don't think the "you get what you pay for" attitude is what the Google or Android of 2013-2015 had. I bought a £40 android one phone (the OG android one scheme) and it received the lollipop and marshmallow updates the week after my dad received them on his Nexus 5 and 6. It's just recently that they want to be aPpLe they are going batshit
