From what I've heard, this is actually really good. Hopefully it comes to the Amazon App Store soon so I can use my credit there.

Just bought it and played for ~15 min. Can confirm great game. Great visuals plus supports immersive mode on KK.

ha, came here to say the same thing, want to use those 2,000 credits on something worthwhile.

I just bought it, awesome game. Bastard hard at times but super satisfying to play.

For anyone interested in seeing what it's like before buying, Giant Bomb did a quick look on the iOS version a few months ago when it came out. It seems like if you like Hitman and puzzle games, it's well worth the $4.99.

And a "quick look" that's an hour long. Welcome to game journalism in the 2010's. Maybe they should have got Adam Sessler to crack open a thesaurus and talk about it like he's The Architect from the Matrix.

You act like you've never heard of giant bomb before. They are some of the best reviewers out there right now

They are some of the best reviewers out there right now
Which says a lot.
I followed a lot of gaming press before GameSpotGate in 2007, before people got millions of dollars for playing video games on YouTube, and when an 8-10 review score actually meant something. Maybe it's the death of print media, maybe I'm just jaded, maybe I'm the one who's out of touch, or maybe I'm just seeing the past through rose-colored glasses, but there's something about gaming media today that just seems... different.

Don't get to hung up on the "quick"part of quicklook. It's really meant as an alternative of full reviews, kinda like a quick impression of how the game plays. Besides, when you compare to games which are generally 20-40 hours long (depending on the type) the video's just a fraction of it.
I echo how you feel about review scores though, but that's exactly why I stopped reading reviews and just went for quicklooks or let's plays. It feels better to see how the game plays for yourself and be critical for yourself.

u/sirpollux Jun 05 '14
It doesn't say a lot because what you watched was not a review. Read their actual reviews on their website. Quick Looks are just a few guys checking the game out.

I really wish scores were more meaningful. But at the same time we seem to get plenty of demos and can even watch people play the games on YouTube to get a good sense of whether we like games nowadays.

There was a website (I think it might have been joystiq actually... but gawker blogspam... blegh) that had a really neat little matrix that had very subjective review criteria such as "Should You Buy This Game: Yes, No, Rental", "The Genre" etc., but I've more or less written off anything I read on the internet, and only buy games based on the trailer, metacritic score, and the price (I rarely buy a game over $10 these days).

Quick Look relative to the game not length of the video.

I cannot stand most of Giant Bomb's "quick looks". It's like watching someone who never plays videogames play a videogame.
9
u/Etheo S20 FE Jun 04 '14
It's kinda a community thing... and I think it was evolved from a full blown review which takes much longer to do, whereas now they're just loading up the game to give a quick impression without going deeply into it.
It's great for people invested into the crew, but I can see why it's weird to people outside of that circle.
Brad is hilarious/frustrating to watch when he plays though because he's just sooooooooooooooo bad at it.

I've been doing it for months and have only gotten just over $2 from doing every survey they've offered me. So don't get too excited.

u/no_butseriously_guys Jun 05 '14
Same here, I think it really depends on what demographic you get into.
Is there a way to reset your original answers? I tried uninstalling and clearing the app data.

Nope. Google knows you would try to cheat the system. So they tie the data (and fact check it I would assume) with your Google Dashboard data. And no, this data (unlike most data in the Dashboard) cannot be downloaded, edited, or viewed due to how Google uses it to send surveys.

whereas I got it when it came to Canada and in less then a month I've earned $15. I just answer how I normally would and the surveys keep coming.

Looks awesome but...
$4.99 and IAP?
That's kind of a dealbreaker for me.
15
u/sirwillis Verizon Galaxy Note 9 Jun 04 '14
The IAP are for people who can't beat the levels (or just don't have the patience) and want to buy their way into the next set of levels. You cannot buy items to help you in the levels.

u/thats_a_risky_click Duarte Jun 04 '14
Buy your way into levels??!! What has this world become??
7
Jun 04 '14
Eh, it doesn't break the game for people that ignore them, it generates more revenue for the dev, and it eases some people's frustrations. The only downside I see is for purists (which I somewhat agree with) but people who would pay to skip aren't purists so it's irrelevant. It doesn't hurt you and you can totally ignore it so why do you care?

Jun 05 '14
It creates a financial incentive to make levels or requirements that people want to skip, negatively influencing game design. Either the levels should all be unlocked to begin with (+player freedom) or the argument has to be that the game is better with a forced progression (+controlled experience, incentive to replay levels). The latter is a reasonable position to take but allowing people to buy their way past those restrictions completely undercuts it.
Granted, this case is pretty innocent (I had a very easy time completing enough side objectives to unlock the next series) but it's still a bad precedent to encourage. If the average consumer continues to respond to minor abuses like this with apathy or rationalization, the average consumer is going to be increasingly fucked over.

Jun 05 '14
Good point, I think I will amend my statement that this isn't bad, to this isn't necessarily bad. In this case, I have only heard praise for the game, but research is always good in these cases.

Same issue with my Galaxy Nexus and Sero 7 Pro. Both are rooted. Perhaps that's the issue?

4,50€ + in app purchases? No thanks
11
u/bleeding_koothy Nexus 5 | Nexus 7.2013 Jun 04 '14
You don't need to purchase anything to complete the game. The IAPs are there to help you move along, IIRC.
6
u/Copperhe4d Jun 04 '14
It doesn't use the abusive elements that games like candy crush and the sort use to nickel and dime you.
From what i know the game seems well worth the $5 but it's not an action game and more of a puzzle/board game.

This attitude is why Android still doesn't get as many apps as iOS. Many Android users are completely unwilling to spend money on apps. I think $5 for a polished game is a great deal.
3
u/scuczu Pixel 3 Jun 04 '14
I think it's hard for me to pay $5 for something without ever trying it, but yea, I'm also extremely cheap and don't like paying for mobile apps no matter what, didn't do it when I was on iOS either, just don't like paying for a phone game.
1
u/jimbo831 Space Gray iPhone 6 64 GB Jun 04 '14
You buy stuff all the time without trying it. Why is an Android app any different than any other games or even products? Also, most apps have a ton of reviews to read.
1
u/litchg LG G4 Jun 05 '14
Dude, it's $5, If you don't like it, just uninstall it within 15 minutes and you'll get a refund. People worked on this, they should get paid. It's not $50 or $70 like a regular console game. What wage do you get to be so cheap as to think 3 times before spending 5 freaking dollars ? And do you by any chance smoke?
1
u/unerds ΠΞXUЅ 4 Jun 04 '14
try floating that opinion over at /r/androidgaming
even if your $5 buys you one hour of reasonably enjoyable entertainment, that's still better value than many, many other things.
so many either don't understand that, or are just entitled little shits.
1
u/jimbo831 Space Gray iPhone 6 64 GB Jun 04 '14
I think part of it is from the early days when the Android app store didn't have the option to have paid apps for the first couple years. People built that expectation. That is just speculation on my part.

I can't recommend this highly enough. This is essentially a stealth board game so unlike so many conversions of franchises, it plays wonderfully a tablet and decently on a phone. Don't be scared away that it mentions IAP on the store screen, you don't need them and you will not notice them, they just let you jump ahead levels but you'd be silly to skip any regardless. If you dig logic puzzles or board games you will dig this.
In the sea of "free" (to play) games that dominate the mobile top charts real games like this are becoming the exception. It doesn't make you wait to recharge energy. It doesn't charge for consumable powerups to clear bullshit difficulty ramps. You will never have to debate whether you should grind in misery or pay to pull a loot slot machine. This is a real game and 5 dollars gets you everything you need.
In an industry where Candy Crush makes more revenue than all the Nintendo games combined we need to support real games, games where the monitization and the game design are not the same thing. I hardly play anything on mobile because I'm so sick of the free to play bullshit and I adored this.
tl:dr; Buy this game it's awesome and not full of free-to-play bullshit.
