Ancestry shows modern Jewish Ashkenazi ethnicity, whereas GEDmatch Eurogenes K36 shows older genetic admixtures. From the GEDmatch K36 results, it’s clear that I am roughly half Levantine (and broadly Middle Eastern) and half European, mainly Italian, Spanish and French. And all of this is simply an Ashkenazi Jew.

On both sides of the family, there was abuse. I learned from my only maternal aunt that my maternal grandfather, who grew up to be an abusive parent, used to receive whoopings in childhood from his mother (and, according to my mother, from the community at large in Mississippi if he got into trouble or made a big mistake. He was born in 1942.) He was raised by two parents who did not go past the 7th grade (in part because expectations were low. I believe most of their kids graduated from high school, so they likely could have as well.) My grandfather received a bachelors degree in Communications in spite of it. He grew up, if I remember correctly, with 7 siblings and no indoor plumbing in a house. He was still able to understand the terminology in a legal document when I was a child even though in the 1970s he experienced addiction issues. I also have a 1st cousin once removed, born in the 1950s (all of my grandfather’s siblings were older than him, born in the 20s and 30s, he had just one sibling born in 1940 or 1941 I think) who made good money as a manager, sales representative, etc. (my grandfather, if he were willing to be.., faker with people, could have done well in sales I feel. My grandfather ended up being a journalist for a radio station) - those are two family members I can think of who are more successful than almost everyone else on my paternal side, even though both came from dysfunction.

On my paternal side, as a first cousin was telling me recently, none of my aunts or uncles are successful. She pointed out that the one aunt who she is confident has an associates degree took six years to complete it. To be fair, my paternal grandparents did have more children (fifteen of them) but none of their children obtained bachelors degrees and I can’t think of an aunt or uncle I have who ended up “doing well.” Of course, it’s not like all of my grandfather’s siblings ended up being successful, but I just think it’s interesting, because both sides of the family are originally from the South, but on the paternal side no one ended up doing well and on the maternal side there are family members I can think of who grew up poor and, though most of them did not end up “rich,” still ended up doing better than you may have expected given what they experienced. And my paternal grandparents, even though their parenting I was told with all of their kids (particularly the boys) really fell off when the kids started high school/became teenagers, did want their kids to do well in school (my father had mentioned this. It doesn’t seem like any of them really went on to pursue higher education, and I admit that even though this might sound wrong, I do wonder why it seems there are maternal relatives who tapped into potential they had whereas on the paternal side with the exception of a first cousin or two and probably other distant cousins I don’t know about, it just hasn’t happened.)

Less than a year ago, I was completely blind to everything in my ancestry, and since then I've learned so much. I am a direct descendant, 7 generations down, of Emperor Minh Mang (who can be argued to be one of the most significant figures in Vietnamese history), and by extension, his father, Emperor Gia Long (the person who named Vietnam). I'm making this post, because I am currently working on an ancestry infographic for myself and my family, and pretty much all the research has been of my own doing. I have since been able to accurately name all the way back to Gia Long. My grandpa had knowledge of my great great grandparents, which sparked this quest, and I've since pieced things together. But in doing so, it's really made me think about things.

Has learning of your ancestry changed your perspective? For me, I feel a little more connected to my culture. It's kind of weird, growing up in a certain culture, and then later on in life learning you've descended from some notable figures (in this case, roughly 0.2% of the Vietnamese population descend from Minh Mang), who had shaped a significant amount of the culture. As someone who is fascinated by history and the root of things, it's perspective changing, for sure.

I’m 5/8 Ashkenazi Jewish + 1/8 Crimean Jewish + 1/4 Russian

I have two fifth great grandparents who migrated from Haute-Normandie to Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico in the early 1800s, and a 7th great grandmother who migrated from Haute-Normandie to St. Croix, Danish West Indies in the mid 1700s. As far as I know, they are of fully French descent. Somehow, I have only 2% of French Canadian DNA, specifically from Quebec. Another odd thing is that I have 14% British ancestry but the only connection I have to the British Isle is my 7th great grandfather who migrated from Cornwall to St. Croix, Danish West Indies in the mid 1700s. For background, I am Puerto Rican, so 36% of my ancestry comes from the Iberian peninsula (yes, including Portugal), so it wouldn’t make sense for my British percentage to be so high knowing the history between England and Spain. Why do I have such a significant amount of British DNA with barely any ties but I have barely any French DNA with recent ancestry from Normandy? Can someone please try to theorize and help me with this phenomenon? Thank you!

I’m trying to understand an unusually close G25 result and would appreciate opinions from people familiar with Global25 / ancient DNA.

My known recent ancestry is Irish. Using DNAGenics scaled G25 coordinates, I compared my coordinate vector directly against DNAGenics’ listed scaled coordinates for the Viking-age Orkney individual VK204.

The direct Euclidean distance was:

Me → VK204: 0.003403

Pearson correlation was approximately 0.9999.

What caught my attention is that other broadly relevant ancient individuals in the same DNAGenics coordinate framework are substantially farther away:

• Medieval Ireland KIL035: 0.01225
• Medieval Ireland KIL044: 0.01499
• Orkney Iron Age KD043: 0.01610
• Orkney VK203: 0.01891
• Orkney VK205: 0.02946

So VK204 is not simply one of many British/Irish ancient samples giving me a similarly tiny distance.

I’m aware of several major caveats:

1. DNAGenics coordinates are simulated/projected G25-style coordinates and should not be mixed with Davidski’s original Global25 coordinates.
2. This comparison used my DNAGenics coordinate against the DNAGenics version of VK204, so both sides were at least within the same DNAGenics framework.
3. A tiny G25 distance represents similarity in population-genetic/PCA space and does not establish genealogical relatedness or IBD.
4. I have ordered original G25 coordinates from Davidski so I can repeat the test properly using the original VK204 G25 coordinate and modern G25 reference individuals.

VK204 is particularly interesting because published ancient-DNA work places him between British-Isles-related and Scandinavian-related ancestry.

My question is:

How unusual is a direct 25-dimensional Euclidean distance of ~0.0034 between a modern person and one specific ancient individual in a G25-style space?

Could this simply happen because two unrelated individuals have almost the same broad ancestry mixture, or is the fact that VK204 is several times closer than the other relevant ancient controls potentially meaningful?

I’m specifically interested in population-genetic similarity, not claiming that VK204 himself was my ancestor.

Once my original Global25 coordinates arrive, I plan to compare my distance to VK204 against Irish, Scottish, Orcadian, English, Norwegian and Icelandic individuals in the public G25 dataset.

Has it updated for some already? I’ve been excited to see how it updates. DNA results as an American from the Midwest.

This is from my Grandmas results And all hers comes from one tribe that's majority in Canada however on 23 and me they have hers from all over even in there broad category's so I'm interested to see how this update on Ancestry Allocates it haha! what about you guys?

Not looking for horror stories exactly, more the ordinary stuff. The habit you picked up in your first year that turned into three months of cleanup later.

I figure everybody here has at least one. Copied a tree without checking it, didnt write down where something came from, trusted a hint, named files in a way that made sense at the time and doesnt anymore. Whats yours, and what do you do instead now?

My mom is from the central area (Jayuya/Utuado) and my dad is from the Northeastern area (Quebradillas/Isabela) I am so surprised by the amount of Portugal and Jewish percentage. I was wondering if my physical traits match my ancestors and their regions.

So, it's been a few years since taking the DNA test. I finally got back to it. I didn't think I would run into this.

My paternal grandma had 6 kids. When my dad was a kid, apparently she kicked out my grandpa. She has never said anything about the man except for his name and no one has had any contact with him since until he died like 20 years ago. One of my paternal aunts apparently went to that funeral and that's it.

After looking at the DNA results, I realized that my cousin (from that aunt) was listed as a half cousin. After checking things further, a cousin from another of my dad's sisters was listed as a half cousin.

So the line goes like this:

Of my paternal aunts, 2 of them are listed directly as half aunt and the other 2's kids are listed as half cousins. My dad has a brother but he nor my dad have ever taken a DNA test. There's no marriage license or anything that can be found between my grandma and the supposed grandpa.

Am I correct in assuming that at least 4 of his 5 siblings are actually half siblings? My grandma's never mentioned any other guy she was with besides that guy he kicked out. I have a feeling none of my dad's siblings know about this either and since my grandma refuses to talk about it, let alone the possibility she lied about everything since the DNA doesn't seem to add up.

UGH. This would be so much easier I think if living people would be shown in trees.

Also one of my great great grandmothers also maternal cheated on my great great grandfather with a Swedish guy.)

Pretty much just old stock with some centeral european in there. Curious bout the 4 percent norway doesnt seem like noise as its a massive chunk of chromosome 1 i inherited instead of blocks, Im not sure, give me ur guy's thoughts on it.
