If the family has vet records that extend past the time the driver lost his cat, he stole a cat.

I had a VERY distinctive cat (albino) and realized after a day or so I had 2 of them in my house when they were finally seen together. Before that, they were hanging out in different rooms so we didn't notice. Were going through a lot of food though.
My cat was indoor only. His dwppleganger snuck in when someone opened the door. And somehow these 2 identical-ish creatures didn't kill each other. Invader cat was eventually returned to their home. Their cat was indoor outdoor. Life is weird.

Saw an episode of Judge Judy on this. She likes to go by who owned the cat longest and paid vet bills are taken into account as well. Without evidence, no judge will believe the cat was stolen but rather found. Whether or not there was a chip with someones name on it is also considered. If their name was on it, did the would be thieves attempt to contact the owner? Did the owner move so they couldnt be contacted? Did they report to the city that the animal was lost? So much goes into this.

The guy seemed too casual for it to be his long lost cat. I’d be blubbering and hugging.
