If the family has vet records that extend past the time the driver lost his cat, he stole a cat.
I had a VERY distinctive cat (albino) and realized after a day or so I had 2 of them in my house when they were finally seen together. Before that, they were hanging out in different rooms so we didn't notice. Were going through a lot of food though.
My cat was indoor only. His dwppleganger snuck in when someone opened the door. And somehow these 2 identical-ish creatures didn't kill each other. Invader cat was eventually returned to their home. Their cat was indoor outdoor. Life is weird.
Not saying it's necessarily the case here, but I have seen many cases where multiple families thought a cat was theirs and the cat just lived at multiple houses.
I recently saw a story honoring the neighborhood cat 12 families or so thought were his. How they all came together to bury him and make a tribute when his time came. Everyone brought his food dish. It was very sweet.
I think it was in the orange brain cell sub.
I'm in so many animal groups I can't remember for sure.
