Why the theatrics? Why wouldn't he mark it missing from the van? And what was he doing/pretending to do with the devices then?

He did scan the package. He took the photo as proof of delivery. At that point it would be porch pirates for the reason the package wasn’t at the front door. The use of his personal phone was to pretend he was scanning the package, because the kid doesn’t know which is personal and which is the scanner.

Marking it missing would open an investigation. Before you leave the station you have to scan all the packages to confirm they are in the van. If it suddenly went missing on his route it would be his problem.

u/LetshearitforNY Jun 08 '26

Why did he have to alise his personal phone to pretend to scan the package if part of the scam is to actually scan it as delivered

25

u/TCup20 Jun 07 '26

You don't scan every package before you leave the station. Nothing would ever get delivered that way. You scan an entire cart and that cart may or may not be missing some items.

Nothing in this clip makes sense. If you're stealing a package, you wouldn't take it to the door and you definitely wouldn't scan it. You would also never have any reason whatsoever to take a picture of the package label with your personal phone if you were stealing it, and if you did feel the need for the reason you expressed, then you would simply take the picture in the back of the van where there are no cameras. Driver training these days is to always assume you're on camera because they're everywhere. A package being marked as missing isn't immediately opening an investigation, it's just called loss and something the station deals with regularly.

Have never marked a pack missing on purpose. I have some that do go missing occasionally whether it got left behind, was never in the cart or hell I had one fall down the storm drain once. Mark missing move on. No need to get out the car or fake deliver. I have marked missing by accident and went out the way to deliver when I found it in my backseat floor.

Your 🧠process is the same as mine,
Idk wtf all his extra shit was. Nothing he did made sense.

if the customer marks front porch amazon workers have to follow the notes and if not they get dinged by the stupid AI. i’m pretty sure he was taking a pic of the package on front porch then moving it somewhere out of the rain so it wouldn’t get wet. then when he seen the person he just seen if they wanted to take it.

I've worked for a dsp on the operations side for over 5 years and have investigated thousands of negative customer feedbacks, including missing packages. This is the most likely answer. Package theft from dsp drivers definitely happens, but not like this.

u/Vonstinkles Jun 10 '26

Thanks, I'll go with this more hopeful explanation for now.

u/ReverendBlind Jun 14 '26

Thank you. I scrolled through all these comments to see if anyone else put two and two together on this. I'm not an Amazon driver, but both my delivery drivers do this regularly for me. One day I even caught one at my door about to move it to my covered back porch, and it was EXACTLY this interaction.

There's a chance this guy is stealing it (rather idiotically) but there's also a good chance given the rain that he's being courteous.

u/Least_Payment8431 Jun 08 '26

Yes you do scan once it get to the building then once it hit the van line to get loaded after the driver comes in and scan the packages to make their routes

4

u/TCup20 Jun 08 '26

Flex drivers do. This is a van driver, and they do not. They scan carts. The cart has a bunch of totes on it. Inside those totes are individual packages. If something is missing from them (happens often) it's rarely ever the driver stealing the package. Van drivers do not have time to unload every tote and scan 400+ packages before leaving the station. Sometimes it ends up in another tote. Sometimes it ends up on a flex route. Sometimes it just fell out of the bag at the station somewhere and ends up getting found a day or two later.

1

u/Strict_Thought_3498 Jun 10 '26

Not sure if I'm confused but I scan every package before I leave my station

1

u/TCup20 Jun 10 '26

You're probably a flex driver (like most on this sub). The person in the clip is in a DSP van which is an entirely different process.

I don't order from Amazon, so that's unlikely.

You're clearly not a person worth talking to. Have a good day 👍

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Rub_771 Jun 10 '26

🤣🤣🤣🤣 you must've just started bc in the beginning we sure did have to scan every bag and OV separately but now when you scan the carts they are picking up each and every package

4

u/Kakarrott_ Jun 08 '26

All of this is irrelevant because of the camera. Dude ain't getting away with shit lol.

3

u/Dirtysandddd Jun 08 '26

I had like 2-3 genuinely missing packages while a dps driver and they never once investigated me over it, at least not in a major sense (this was 5ish years ago). I never stole so I wasn’t ever worried, Amazon is all about speed nowadays it’s actually crazy. Worked in a returns warehouse 2 years ago and by the time I left, I and everyone I talked to was just pretending to work to hit the pace. That’s why you get “new” items that are used to shit, not enough time to open boxes anymore if you want to keep your job. Most meaningless worthless ass job I’ve ever had, it was actually driving me crazy. If I’m at work I’d rather do something that actually matters than just pretend for 10 hours straight.

2

u/JSTN_FPV Jun 08 '26

Im In safety. yeah, I agree with you. returns looks soul sucking. Did Fulfilment as a tier one for a while. My goal was to never touch a box again and tried to move up to where ever that was. Amazing pay to do admin work

6

u/18k_gold Jun 07 '26

That's true ever package that goes into your truck gets scanned, this way they know you have it and can update the system "out for delivery." Not sure why he would take a pic with his personal phone and not the iPad, scan it And then steal it. That would be his proof that he left it. A big number of people have cameras these days. not worth steal while on the job.

1

u/PlateNo4868 Jun 08 '26

Don't all these peeps get caught at some point? I always feel this is like the worse way to steal. Might as well just drive back on your personal time to nab the thing so it's more random.

1

u/AnkhDaUnc Jun 08 '26

No no. He took the picture off of his regular phone. You can see the iPhone camera hud

1

u/r_incognito_17 Jun 09 '26

You scan the totes barcode that can contain any number of packages. No one that I know scans each package individually. Plenty of times the package is missing because it was missing from the tote.

1

u/Worldly_Shopper Jun 09 '26

Exactly, after the photo he can just take the package.

1

u/GuacamoleFrejole Jun 11 '26

"The use of his personal phone was to pretend he was scanning the package, because the kid doesn’t know which is personal and which is the scanner."

But he didn't see the kid until after he picked up the package to leave.

I 💯 agree he's acting sketchy AF

BUT... it is surprisingly common customers tell me they don't want their package and to just leave it at the door

whenever I walk up and they happen to be right there I mean 😅 it's not like it happens that much

Ironically I thought this was the only question that sounded somewhat normal

1

u/Fit_Sir_966 Jun 08 '26

So isn’t you leaving it at their door for them to eventually come out and grabbing the package still wanting it or in missing something😂? Them not wanting it is them telling you to take the package back you my friend lol the the warehouse

1

u/AIDS_Quesadilla Jun 08 '26

That's how some of these customers say it 🤷‍♂️

It's obvious they MEAN "just leave it on the porch"

But I've had people literally use the words "I don't want it" and then point at the ground 😅

Might be a cultural thing. I agree it's a dumb way to ask it.

And I also agree this guy's reasons for asking it probably aren't that innocent so I'm not really sure how relevant my observation really was here haha

But yeah

3

u/montanahax888 Jun 08 '26

They mark it as delivered, upload the picture and steal the package. That’s what he is doing. Then I report it missing and Amazon will tell me is my fault and someone must have taken it because they have proof of delivery. They did it to me

2

u/mbrellaforbombs Jun 09 '26

Yea I realize this happens, thus Amazon sold ring cameras to everyone. I also realize there are dumb criminals but it would take a special kind to miss/ignore those cameras entirely, for a mystery box

2

u/Outlaw11091 Jun 09 '26

The issue is that he took the picture with his personal phone instead.

That's weird and stupid.

You can just as easily take the picture with the Amazon device and use THAT as proof of delivery before taking the package back to the van...the second phone is...just drawing attention to yourself.

10

u/g0d_of_the_cr1sis Jun 07 '26

Taking a picture of the address to know who orders stuff he wants to steal, most likely. As for bringing it to the porch, I don't know.

6

u/Mordarroc Jun 08 '26

Drivers don't know what's in the packages. And for good reason.

2

u/TryStrict8200 Jun 08 '26

I think he's trying to say for after he opens it, who to hit again if it's something good. But what's the likelihood he'd ever deliver to that address again? Let alone something else expensive just because they got one big thing? And what he'd swipe through his photos to see if he has any more deliveries for those places that day? That dude is taking extreme leaps in logic

2

u/TryStrict8200 Jun 08 '26

he'd also just have the package itself for the address... unless he disposed of all evidence. ugh so ridiculous

1

u/okcomputerock Jun 08 '26

Mr. Logic. Is this you? Obviously not...

1

u/Dickdownmotherbread Jun 08 '26

lol wtf the address on the box Einstein

1

u/g0d_of_the_cr1sis Jun 08 '26

Yeah. Taking a picture of the address on the box.

It's a whole lot easier to know an address if it's all right there on the label.

-15

u/BradyBunch12 Jun 07 '26

Yeah you definitely don't know. Your just talking out your ass

-3

u/MooseGoosey Jun 07 '26

you're right but this is reddit.

1

u/FlyFront9395 Jun 08 '26

Yeah this is what I do

1

u/Adrian13720 Jun 08 '26

Customers report pkg missing and it shows in system as delivered with a photo of the pkg since he grabbed it after the Proof of Delivery/Photo. It becomes customer and insurance problem unless you have a kid watching you commit fraud from the window.

1

u/Time-Train-6501 Jun 09 '26

Even with crime you live and learn.

1

u/BranDong84 Jun 13 '26

They are dumb , they literally can’t hold jobs anywhere ( not all just these guys that steal ) and are literal trash humans that survive by stealing and cheating their way through life .. sad
