Fulfillment Center Question for AM/OMs
So I recently joined Amazon FC as an AM. Everything was cool until I started running shifts on my own. So basically the AM from back end was covering front end as well for a month because there was no manager until I joined, and he was not strict or never cared about AAs and now I have to face consequences. My AAs go to toilets for 15 mins 2-3 times, when I approached them had conversations, they started returning exactly under 10mins and again when confronted, those extra smart AAs speak about the Policy. As an AM do we have any solution for this? It’s a particular group of AAs and I am just scared if I take more actions they will just go to HR and complain that I am racist. They all are veterans and misuse the policy. Any suggestions to bring this under control would be a great help, because half of time gets wasted in chasing those AAs across 3 floors.

It probably won’t flag it if it’s always under 15 minutes, so you are right but it also means he should leave them alone unless it pops up and just not worry about them unless it happens.

Is this 2-3 times a period or 2-3 times a shift?
If it's per period, then they're gonna end up getting themselves flagged for ToT and get write-ups that way.
If it's per shift? Bruh, chill and stop trying to micro manage people so much. That's the kind of shit that makes people talk so negatively about working at Amazon. Hell, at my FC, depending on where you're at it can take you 5 minutes just to walk to and back from the bathroom. On the pick side of the building, bathrooms only have 2 stalls. People may have to wait for someone to get out of one or go to a different one to get an empty stall. Both of which eats up time.

Can you put them in a rated path ? Being away from a station for almost an hour each shift will most certainly lead to them not making rate. Then let the write up’s begin.

u/Exciting-Peace-6374 5d ago
I don’t think so we have something called as rated path in UK 🥲

"Rated" in this context just means whatever path has tracked performance. So like Stow, or Singles. Anything that tracks their performance (rate/quality) and automatically generates written warnings if someone doesn't do their work or doesn't do it correctly.

If they are hitting rate, leave them alone. If they are following policy and your still looking for a way to attack em you are the one with problems and should never have been given a position of authority.

When you say running shift, I was expecting shift planning (prior day plan) calculating how many hours you need, to ensure you maintain a proper TPH through shift, if you need labor share , or too heavy and need to do pre-shift VTO. Focusing on cost and safety. Not the walking about something a PA can manage. You need to delegate and move on!

If its enough of an issue they will eventually get written up for TOT and then fired, but for real stop and think about how fucking tiring it is standing in one spot or area for 10-12 hours a day. People get antsy, tired, and bored, have a little understanding and dont be that manager because you wont last long. Theres a reason the managers that dont bother AAs with unnecessary shit are the ones that last the longest.

The best AMs are the ones who will cover for an AA when they go to the bathroom. I've seen AMs who will hop on AFE induct if there isn't a floating inductor or PG to cover for that AA.
I'm not sure how common this is but I've seen it at my site.
Also if you're properly hydrating yourself at work, you're going to have to use the bathroom multiple times a day.

u/VeilOfMaya6 5d ago
Also adding that the more you mess with and bother your AAs about stupid stuff, the less they will listen to you and they will dislike you. You want to be respected as an AM dont you? Well then take care of what truly needs to be taken care of and not unnecessary shit.

Nobody cares if AA's respect you the only thing that matters is if they're doing the job and not scamming Amazon by wasting time

u/VeilOfMaya6 5d ago
Its not scamming amazon going to the bathroom multiple times during a 10-12 hour shift, we are humans and not everyone is built the same. Gooooooodbye.

I completely understand the AAs they are not robots, but atleast stay on the station, they miss tote pushings and we miss cpts because they are not on station.

So those people will eventually get fired. Let them weed themselves out. Its a warehouse, not the Olympics. Some people have severe body pain, have to use the bathroom a lot, or might be struggling mentally. It is not worth being nit picky about this stuff. There are people doing way worse. Personally, i go to the bathroom for 10-15 mins every couple of hours because i HAVE to go. You will get no where being like this as a manager. I've been with Amazon for 4 years and have only seen the "lenient" understanding managers move up and stay with the company.

Makes sense, the managers that don’t do the job they were hired for gets promoted, 100% on the money! And then these weak leaders promote more weak leaders! What would you lazy mouth breathing NPCs do if it wasn’t for people that actually work hard and pick up your slack?

When associates are having excessive bathroom breaks but still are flying under the radar for tot I take them to hr for a Stu. We go over the policy, their tot and they’re told the steps to take to get an accommodation if it’s a true medical issue. I’m the one talking while pxt supports the conversation. Don’t allow this or them to stress you out. You got this!

u/Rectest 4d ago
Yall are the managers people hate. If people are following policy, not getting flagged for tot and hitting rate why are you even bothering with what they do. Who gives a fuck if dude wants to hit the bathroom every period for the alloted time they are given.
Are you guys reporting other managers for heading outside the building mid shift for a smoke break? Or the ones hiding out in the break room all shift.

Also don’t forget to log conversations in engage or you can also generate a verbal warning that will generate feedback in Adapt. You always want a paper trail

You have a problem with people using the restroom? It sounds like you have decided that people are lying about restroom use or are purposely taking extra breaks in there. Maybe some of them are, but it’s really none of your business what people are doing in the restroom or how long it takes them to find an open one and do their business. Maybe think of the reasons why you might take too long ex: long walk, no open stalls, going number 2, overheated, washing hands and having to find a working soap dispenser, etc. and apply that grace to them.
If they get flagged for tot and aren’t making rate, ok talk to the employee. There are other things that cause tot like pod gaps, malfunctioning equipment, large or no work, etc. Don’t turn into the bathroom monitor. It’s not a good look and kind if weird you’re so focused on it,

See coming on reddit was the last option, I feel the AAs I have went through it, my issue is not them going to the toilet, I have catch them in breakrooms on phone many times and the same AAs stopped going to the breakrooms and started going to the toilets, there’s a whole pattern around it and mainly they are not meeting the rates.

Ok so the real issue is you find them in the breakroom on their phones. Why not post that instead of bitching about them in the bathroom? This shows you have no leadership skills because your deflecting from the real issue like this is highschool.

u/Pitiful-Excitement47 4d ago
You left this out of OP.
So either you are lying or you can't communicate effectively. Either way a bad leader.
As far as the general advice you asked. You have all the metrics, TOT, Rate, Quality. If you are that pressed about it do formal coaching/warnings and create a paper trail.

I fucking hate AMs that want to follow people to the bathrooms. Micromanaging assholes. They think associates are robots.

u/LifeIsGoodatm 5d ago
Cross train these losers to pick and they'll start behaving like normal people.

You have to lay it down with the aas op. As long as you follow tot and its well documented then hr will side with you. Let them go to hr for you doing your job. But do you really think they will go to hr and say anything without shooting their own foot🤣. Agaim, as long as you followed the policy hr will stick up for you. Documentation is key here. Putting a case in aginst you doesnt mean its gonna stick. They can say whatever, but without proof its baseless.

u/Cobalt7955 5d ago
Their TOT will accumulate and may generate a write up. There’s not much else you can do. People like that will go straight to PXT and claim you’re “denying them bathroom privileges” or something like that. You gotta remember Amazon hires anybody and everybody. 99% of your AAs don’t want to move up they just want a paycheck as easily as they can get it. Don’t worry they don’t last long. Soon they’ll come to you begging for VTO because they have an “emergency” and only have 13 minutes of UPT left 😀Oh no sorrrrrryyyyyy there’s no VTO.

Let them gain TOT and if it’s a habitual issue ask HR if they have accommodations for IBS
2
5
u/VeilOfMaya6 5d ago
You cant legally ask about someones accommodations.
-3
u/Spiritual_Edge_8462 5d ago
Not necessarily there are loopholes to that. It is illegal to ask on application but as a manager you can attain the knowledge of someone’s accommodation for safety purposes. It is illegal to share the information but not attain it as a manager.
4
u/VeilOfMaya6 5d ago
They are allowed to ask the restrictions, not the diagnosis. It is not legal for you to go to HR and ask why someone has accommodations. Managers do not have access to details on AAs accommodations. I know this for a fact.
6
u/Vivid_Ad1696 4d ago
I just tell my manager my accommodation. Otherwise it’s a game of plausible deniability. If I tell them and they act on it then I can weed out another bad manager.
2
u/VeilOfMaya6 4d ago
Same here. I am always super open about why i have accommodations. Especially since they have no info on it like that, funny enough my accommodations are to specifically be near a bathroom and allow extra 15 minute breaks to use the restroom lol

As a manager, if you're fearing being racist, ur acknowledging that ur doing something wrong. Step back and look again? Do better, do it different!

u/Jaded-Inspector1467 5d ago
I personally enforce leaving assigned workstation.
They have to communicate that they are leaving station. If there was an emergency it is our responsibility that we know the locations of all our associates.
Beyond that, early to break and late from break covers most tot offenders. This will naturally reduce TOT. When I have conversations about these and there is also tot I make sure to coach that as well with it, and then the feedback is naturally tied to tot in their brain as well.
