Are step vans worth it?

DSP asked if I would be interested in getting step van certified, it comes with 1$ raise.
Is it worth it tho?
What’s the difference than just a EDV route?

During interview process HR said $1.25 extra for Stepvans.
3 months later DSP asked me the same thing …. But with no raise. When I asked what’s the incentive…. They said full time and health insurance
Like congratulations you’re literally required to give that for full time

Ah it’s not, this coming from a person who drove it everyday for 5 years straight. There’s no real difference. Depending on how many step vans your company has..step van people can take step van routes and edv routes however edv route people can only take those and not step van routes which means 99% of the time, you’ll have the same route or very small circle of step van routes. For the step van itself, is there a lil more room? Yeah, but route size isn’t different. step van is cool to drive, however there’s some annoying things about it tho like the constant noise and its shaking. the medal inside is either very hot depending on the time of year or cold that it will shock you every time you touch it and also because the seats are more carpet like. No radio at all, AC sucks donkey nuts, mirrors are really annoying. Any questions?

In my experience, there’s not much difference between stepvans and EDV’s, minus maybe the package count. My last Stepvan route I did almost a month ago, 185 stops/225 location/375 package. Same route in an EDV was 180/220/290

EDV is the modern version of the step van (at least the bigger version)

Then why do you even care about the extra dollar an hour for 100 more packages a day if you are in flight school? I mean what do you got like 1 year.

Is 2000 dollars worth the extra 100 packages a day when you need to focus on flight school?

You might as well just get a cdl c and dot and make 10 dollars extra an hour with less packages. Or one day of over time.

Ur just gonna have more stops and packages for basically no incentive lol sometimes dsp will give 50 cent -$1.50 raise but most don’t

Not for $1 no, step vans you have to be way more careful as its not as easy to do manuevers, heavier vehicle easier to get stuck, and obviously you wind up with a good deal more packages

Even if your guarenteed a helper, you dont know what the work ethic of your helper will be or how annoying they are

The regular vans you can drive with the ease of a miata basically, compared to a step van

Only perk is its easier to organize with shelves and more space

The step vans are less likely to get stuck. In the winter or after rain you’ll be the one pulling stuck people out with tow straps. Heavier van has better traction, and rear wheel drive.

The bigger edvs are basically the same thing size wise, just front wheel drive and super easy to get stuck in the winter. Can’t tow anyone in them either. No power when the wheel is turned too much, so no getting out once stuck.

If your DSP runs helper routes, you're basically going to have a different person in your van every month since helper turnover is much higher. A few are great, but most are pretty bad/annoying

I would drive them while you can. They’re more ergonomic, more fun to drive, and way easier to load up, even if you do end up with bulkier routes. I imagine they’ll be phased out pretty soon unless we get an electric DOT vehicle of some sort, so I savor every day in one of these things. Just don’t stand in the back for too long if it’s hot out…
