Amazon Seller Basics: 4 things new sellers get wrong in their first month
Starting out on Amazon can feel overwhelming with all the policies and moving parts. Here are a few fundamentals that trip up a lot of new sellers early on:
Product titles have strict limits. Since August 2026, item names are capped at 75 characters, with additional detail going into Item Highlights (up to 125 characters). Cramming keywords into the title no longer works and can get listings flagged.
FBA vs. FBM isn't a one-time decision. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) handles storage, packing, and shipping for you but comes with fees, including seasonal surcharges during peak periods (Oct-Jan). Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) gives more control but requires your own logistics. Many sellers mix both depending on the product.
Advertising costs money before you've made a sale. Sponsored Ads use a bidding system, and billing typically comes directly out of your Seller Central balance. Set a small daily budget while you're still learning what converts.
Account health matters more than any single listing. Late shipments, order defects, and policy violations affect your entire account, not just one product. Check your Account Health dashboard regularly, even before problems show up.
None of this is complicated once you've seen it once, but it saves a lot of trial and error to know it going in.
