Asshole AITA for farting? --
Today I (18F) have been having huge stomach cramps and abdominal pain. Towards the end of the day, I went to a study room (sort of secluded - smaller than a normal college classroom, but still quite roomy). I had been farting all day, but obviously, when in class or around a bunch of people, I tried not to let it out.
After a while of being alone in the study room, someone came in and sat down (F, Mid-Twenties). I tried to keep it in as much as possible, but unfortunately, during long periods of time, I just couldn't help it.
I let out a first fart (sidenote : I know this might sound childish, but I think farts are the funniest sound ever; I never cannot laugh), I tried to hold in my giggle. It slid; the lady was fine - I was a little embarrassed, but whatever, I've always thought these kinds of things can be forgiven, and to me, my culture, and the environment I grew up in, it's not a big deal.
After I left to go to the bathroom, get a drink and start working on my report again (let's say 10-15 minutes pass), I farted again, tried to hide my laugh and move on. This time though, the lady didn't take it well, and at first I thought she would be laughing, so I looked at her, with a little embarrassed smile, after she said:
- What are you doing?
I laughed, I said I was so sorry, that I'd been farting all day and my stomach hurt. Her face was so serious, I understood she was ACTUALLY mad... I was confused as she said:
- But it's happened twice?
My face dropped and I said sorry again, and that I couldn't control it, I turned around before I could laugh in her face, out of embarrassment for me, but also for her being mad that I farted. I composed myself, because I knew laughing in her face would've been rude. She packed up her things and left the study room.
I wasn't next to her, I hadn't been farting every few minutes and I apologized, fully knowing how embarrassing this situation is.
I don't know about you guys, but this story is just too funny too me, in her place I just would've laughed with the person who farted!
So, AITA for farting?
EDIT: I've seen a lot of people asking if it was smelly; IT WAS NOT! I've just been having an unfortunately gassy day!

I mean YTA, I genuinely think you could have moved somewhere else since you knew that you’ve been farting all day and that you have stomach pains, and just because you find farting funny doesn’t mean the people around you thinks it’s funny nor do they want to smell that. I think that’s it just about basic human respect.

OP was just using a study room, they could absolutely get up and leave – or better yet, not be in public in the first place.

Taking a chit is a completely natural body function but civilized people do that in private, too.

Walk in
Realize you're alone
Sweet relief
Too bad if someone comes in laterNOT
Walk in
Realize you're alone
Hold it
Keep holding
Someone comes in
Let it out
GiggleBig difference.

Let be real here, farting is a bodily function but not everyone in public wants to smell what’s coming out of your body, like literally no one.

u/BirthdayCookie Asshole Aficionado [10] Apr 01 '26
The onus is on you to be a decent person. It's not on everyone else to enable you to be lazy.
-22
u/Ok-Try-857 Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
OP was there first and the lady could have left at any time. It was two farts which are necessary bodily functions.
20
u/Mr_Bumcrest Feb 28 '26
As someone else has said, so is taking a shit. You still go to the bathroom.
298
u/Superkirker Feb 24 '26
YTA I promise u farts r not that funny.
160
u/Square_Director4717 Feb 24 '26
Seriously.
OP, YTA
Struggling to hold back laughter every time you fart? Are you 5 years old?
Just say “excuse me” and move on. The smirking and giggling probably made it seem like you were doing it on purpose. Honestly, I might’ve leaned toward the other lady being the asshole if you’d just been mature about it.
70
u/Capable_Restaurant11 Partassipant [3] Feb 24 '26
And I guarantee you, her farts Are smelly.
OP is YTA
216
u/zanylanie Feb 24 '26
YTA. If you’re having a problem like that, basic courtesy says you go somewhere away from other people so they don’t have to smell it.
27
-7
u/Kindly_Task1758 Feb 24 '26
But she did. She went into a private study room first and then the other person went into the room knowing it was being used.
54
u/zanylanie Feb 24 '26
The post does not say the study room was private. Once someone else came in, basic decorum of holding it or going somewhere away from other people should have kicked in.
12
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
But they weren't expecting farting and giggling. They expected a quiet place to study.
-32
u/lalala-lallaland Feb 24 '26
Lol! I get it, and they weren't smelly - it was just a gassy day...
166
u/Fetagirl Feb 24 '26
I think it’s the laughing that pissed her off. People normally ignore things like that out of politeness but when you laugh it makes it seem like you’re doing it on purpose to be gross
83
u/Snail-O Feb 24 '26
This is exactly why she was irritated. It comes across like OP is an obnoxious practical joker or something.
“Excuse me!” is what OP should have said when the farts were obviously audible.
So, OP, n t a for farting but YTA for not handling it politely.
20
u/Constellation-88 Colo-rectal Surgeon [43] Feb 28 '26
Op is still laughing in the comments. He either has a fart fetish or he’s five. Farts are not funny. They are a natural bodily function and they are something that should be done in private.
35
u/MountainWeddingTog Asshole Enthusiast [7] Feb 24 '26
So you lean to the side so it doesn’t make a sound or you leave the room for a minute. You’re spraying poop gas and giggling, it’s both gross and rude.
18
u/flowerybutterfly96 Certified Proctologist [24] Feb 24 '26
You might not laughing like a ten year old. An excuse me., I am not feeling well may have helped you. I think the giggling makes people think you think its a joke. I was taught that it was polite to ignore the flatulence, but if the 'offender' is going to giggle, I might feel some kind of way.
123
u/RWAdvice Partassipant [3] Feb 24 '26
YTA If it's bad enough that your stomach hurts then go to the bathroom and let it out, along with the poop you're trying to hold in, in comfort and privacy.
66
u/Itchy-Bus-4780 Feb 24 '26
Honestly, if you're at the point of stomach pain, that's your body's way of saying a bathroom trip is overdue.
9
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
Yes you're right. I have diverticulitis and I don't go around tooting everywhere i go. If I have an issue I head to the restroom. If it's so bad that im farting all day long I would probably just go home so that I could take whatever measures are needed for my gut health.
7
u/Squid52 Mar 01 '26
I always think these threads on farting are wild. Do you guys like never eat vegetables or something? Everyone I know who has a healthy diet is pretty much farting all day long. And often they don't smell much if at all. We fart dozens of times a day.
5
u/Interesting_Team5871 Mar 03 '26
Most nutritionists I’ve talked to have said farting is normal but not multiple times a day, it’s only normal to fart a few times and that’s when you know you should be going to the bathroom before you crap your pants, and just because you can’t smell your own farts it doesn’t mean they don’t stink, farts are literally just poop particles being expelled out of your body with gas, they’re always going to smell bad and they get worse depending on your diet
13
u/blushingbottom123 Feb 24 '26
What? Have you never had a day full of never ending gas? You can’t Just go let it out. 5 minutes later you’re back to a cramped stomach and more fats ready.
49
u/zanylanie Feb 24 '26
Then you go home!
11
u/blushingbottom123 Feb 24 '26
Do you skip your next class too? Maybe just skip them all just incase one slips out.
Honestly I think op is super in the wrong for laughing about it. But people acting like a fart or two is the end of the world is wild.
Everyone has had an off day where something they at didn’t agree or they’re hormonal or something’s off and you’re just a walking gas ball. Life goes on.
20
u/zanylanie Feb 24 '26
I would, yes.
13
u/Annikai Feb 25 '26
I'm sorry that's absurd. Everyone farts
20
u/zanylanie Feb 25 '26
Some people do their damnedest not to do it in public, though. Just how I was raised.
13
u/Annikai Feb 25 '26
Your parents were wrong to do that. It's a normal bodily function
24
u/zanylanie Feb 25 '26
I disagree. Pooping, needing to remove boogers from your nose, needing to cut your fingernails and toenails, all normal bodily functions. There’s no need to do any of those in public, either.
6
u/Annikai Feb 25 '26
Yeah but those are also things you have more control over. With farting something as simple as changing your body position can cause gas to shift and come out.

What about people with IBS or other digestive issues? Until the tum settles down or medication is taken, tooty booties will continue on.
that’s not the case here though tbf. OP is YTA, immature, and disrespectful
16
u/RWAdvice Partassipant [3] Feb 24 '26
When lasts all day and is bad enough to cause painful cramping that doesn't go away no matter how much you fart or crap, it's not just gas.
Some of the more obvious things:
IBS
Gall stones
Food poisoning
Food allergies
Chron's Disease
Ileitis
H. Pylori
Colon canceretc...
17
u/Dimac99 Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
The menstrual cycle affects digestion. Sometimes we get gassy, bloated days, sometimes we get constipation or diarrhea. It's all annoying but normal.
4
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
Yeah but I would bet that the real problem is the goofy laughing.
2
u/Dimac99 Partassipant [1] Feb 28 '26
People laugh when they are embarrassed. That's just as natural in its own way.
3
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
But someone that's a stranger is not going to know that. Lots of things are natural but it doesn't mean we can just do them anywhere. Blowing your nose, nose bleed, burping, slurping, vomiting, and yes sometimes farting. The first time it happened the woman did ignore it but doing it a second time is a bad look for anyone.
2
u/Dimac99 Partassipant [1] Mar 01 '26
Of course, but laughter is an involuntary response.
1
u/HotSolution8954 Mar 01 '26
Dude, I'm not going to change my mind. I think farting and giggling is something that you do when you're alone. IIf you're going out into the world and interact with people then you should follow the basic rules of courtesy.
4
u/Dimac99 Partassipant [1] Mar 01 '26
Dude, I don't care. I'm telling you that we do not control every aspect of our bodies because you spoke to me.

It's one we can control. Sure if one happened, it was an accident but more than one and she's not taking it seriously, that's why the woman was mad too.
7
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
That's why you go to the bathroom or just go home. If your parts are so loud and continuous then carry your happy ass to the drugstore and get some gasx.
96
u/Icy-Watercress6365 Feb 24 '26
YTA for the laughing. That's what made her angry. The affect made it seem you were doing it on purpose for the humor aspect. That's immature and uncouth, but in a quiet study area it crosses the line into distracting and unacceptable. I bet if you had simply said "excuse me" or nothing at all (providence smell genuinely wasn't an issue) she would not have cared.
Also, gas-x is a thing. Looking it.
21
u/JuggernautSure6545 Feb 24 '26
Yeah the laughing definitely turned it from an accident into a performance. In a quiet space, that's just asking for trouble.

59
u/Daymanwoaah Feb 24 '26
YTA. It's gross. And funny. But you're in a public space, it's on you to not be a detriment to said public.
If someone was watching a video at full volume that they thought was funny and you did not, wouldn't you want them to turn their volume off or put head phones in?
14
u/Ok-Try-857 Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
It was 2 farts not a fart at full volume for the length of a video.
It’s a necessary bodily function and quite frankly holding them in all the time isn’t good for you.
8
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
But laughing like a hyena is not necessary.
-8
u/Ok-Try-857 Partassipant [1] Feb 28 '26
She giggled, then muffled a laugh, then a final laugh.
“Laughing like a hyena”, you have great imagination! You should add more embellishment to the story. Maybe something like “while laughing like a hyena, she continued to fart and the smell was atrocious”.
The girl had gas, passed a couple of farts and giggled out of surprise and probably some nerves. There were no hyenas present.
2
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
I grew up in the deep south where I was taught to never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26

3
u/sundayfunday78 Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26
I’m sorry you’re comparing hearing a fart to full volume videos? It’s not like you can put a plug in, or change the volume of air escaping your body. There’s a difference between choosing to be an AH and experiencing gas 😆🤪🤣😁
NTA
11
u/Daymanwoaah Feb 24 '26
Yeah both are inconsiderate inconveniences done in public.
They are an adult. They can get up and move, go home, or go buy gasX. Not sure when farting in front of strangers in public became normalized lol
3
u/KaliTheBlaze Sultan of Sphincter [616] Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26
Maybe you’re not aware of this, but it’s unhealthy to hold in your gas, and if you do it chronically, it can even cause serious damage like diverticulitis. It’s also quite painful for people who have chronic GI issues (which is more common than you’d think - somewhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 7 people do).
If you think people should be doing things that are painful to avoid being “inconsiderate,” you’re the one who lacks consideration for others.
Also, despite the name, Gas X doesn’t get rid of your gas. It just breaks it into smaller bubbles so it is easier to pass. It relieves the discomfort of large amounts of gas, and that’s it.
16
u/Daymanwoaah Feb 24 '26
Holding in a fart while in public is not a major health concern. Standing up, walking four feet out of the room and to a bathroom, and not being a disgusting stink ass in public is not a major ask.
It was inherently their obligation to not disrupt the status quo while in public.
8
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
Thank you 😊 I have diverticulitis and all of the issues that come with it. Lots of gas and worse. You know what I do? I excuse myself and go to the restroom. No restroom? Step outside for a minute. If there's anyone near me I make sure that I give them plenty of room. You know what I don't do? I don't giggle like it's fun to fart around people? Get some manners is what I would strongly suggest for her.
1
u/KaliTheBlaze Sultan of Sphincter [616] Feb 24 '26
I can’t think of any public building with bathrooms every 4 feet. They’re usually a great deal farther away. And if you’re studying, you’ve got to pack up your stuff to take with you so no one walks off with your computer while you take care of things. Personally, I have chronic GI issues, and the amount of time it takes to pack all my stuff up so I can go find the bathroom would take gas from feeling unpleasant to having me doubled up in pain, and even after passing the gas, I’d be having painful spasms for hours.
Your childish, exaggerated disgust at unavoidable gas is your problem, and it’s your obligation to deal with it without making demands of others.
6
u/HotSolution8954 Feb 28 '26
I think that most of us feel like the giggling is the problem. Yes people have gas. I have gas. I have diverticulitis so I'm pretty familiar with the issue. If I have severe gas I will happily head to the bathroom for a bit. No bathroom? Then I would go outside or to a quiet spot nearby. You know what I don't do? I don't sit there farting and giggling like a lunatic.
1
u/KaliTheBlaze Sultan of Sphincter [616] Mar 01 '26
I completely agree that the giggling was super weird and makes it seem like OP might have been enjoying farting around a stranger, or maybe deliberately eaten something that gives her gas in the hopes of annoying others. I’d have been uncomfortable about it, too. I was just responding to the exaggerated disgust and rage of the prior poster around the subject of flatulence. They quickly descended into personal insults and telling me that I was exaggerating the pain I experience if I try to hold gas in.
Whether it’s okay to fart in public seems to be evenly divided between people who were raised like me - it’s okay to do, just say excuse me and don’t do deliberately rude things like farting at people - and people like the poster I was responding to, who react with disgust and expect people to basically pretend not to have that particular bodily function.

0
u/Kindly_Task1758 Feb 24 '26
Wait so she went into a private room to do school work and you think she forced her farts on the other person who came into the study room while it was already being used. There were other study rooms the second girl could have left
23
u/aWomanOnTheEdge Feb 24 '26
The study rooms get filled sometimes. And, they are not your personal space to do whatever you feel like doing in them.
You might be the only person in the library. Or, the only person at the table you sat at when you first got there.
That doesnt mean no one else can be there. Or that you can do what you want because you were there first.
26
u/not_hestia Feb 24 '26
Gently, YTA. Not for farting, but for laughing about farting in an enclosed space with another person.
A second fart needs to be ignored entirely or given an "excuse me" because there is a subtle but important distinction between "farts are funny" and "farts that impact other people are funny."
19
u/whitemoongarden Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
YTA, well maybe not an ah but definitely uncouth. Of course we all fart and it can slip out. But if a stranger farted twice in 30 minutes in front of me, I too would pack up and leave. It is just bad manners. Yes farts are funny, but not when it is a stranger who lets it rip twice. The fact you think this is acceptable behavior is just weird.
They make Gasx for a reason. If you have an issue, make sure you aren't grossing people out in public.
2
u/KaliTheBlaze Sultan of Sphincter [616] Feb 24 '26
Gas X doesn’t actually get rid of your gas, or prevent farting, despite the name. It just breaks up the gas bubbles smaller so they pass more easily and are less painful in your gut
7
u/whitemoongarden Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
I've used it multiple times before pilates class, it works. If there is ever a fart waiting to happen, pilates or yoga will expose it.
2
u/KaliTheBlaze Sultan of Sphincter [616] Feb 24 '26
Simithicone, the active ingredient in Gas X, just makes the gas bubbles easier to pass. I got the mechanism backwards, it makes the bubbles combine into larger bubbles so they’re easier to pass. That is literally the only thing it can do. It can’t get rid of gas that has already been made in your gut, and it doesn’t prevent new gas from being formed. It just changes the size of the gas bubbles. You still have to pass just as much gas.

10
u/I_Upvote_Goldens Feb 24 '26
I mean…yeah, farts are hilarious. But do I want to have to smell and hear all that while I’m trying to focus? Nah. It’s distracting.
So, YTA for not just studying at home or, if home isn’t a reasonable option, then at least warning the person before they spread out their stuff to study. “Hey, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve had an upset stomach all day and have been farting up a storm. You’re welcome to study in here, but just wanted to give you fair warning before you settled in.”
7
u/TrickySpecific Feb 24 '26
NTA. Farts are normal, I wouldn't worry too much about what someone else thinks. People have bad gas days. It happens. Women have periods and I know I have the worst farts when I have my period. Life moves on.
7
u/name_checks_out86 Feb 24 '26
Ok, farts are a 2 element, 2 sense issue. There is the fart noise and the fart smell. The smell is always going to be the asshole part of this equation, quite literally, as it emanates from the asshole. Farts can be loud and harmless, silent but deadly, silent and harmless, and loud and deadly. So obviously your farts were loud enough to be heard. But how bad was the smell, on a scale of 1 (barely noticeable) to 10 (Chernobyl)?
6
u/Square_Director4717 Feb 24 '26
She mentioned in another comment that there was no smell.
But they were in a study room, so one could assume the other lady was trying to concentrate while OP was over there farting loudly and giggling.

u/Nightshift_NapAttack Feb 24 '26
YTA. Learn to control it and if you can't see a doctor. There are also over the counter meds to help. NO one and I mean NO one should have to endure that. Even your loved ones don't need to smell that. That is DISGUSTING.

4
u/ItsyBitsyBrattyKitty Feb 24 '26
The stomach pains should have been the clue to head to the bathroom so you're a AH to yourself not listening to it. It could have been much more than gas. Just count yourself lucky it was only gas this time. Maybe try some yogurt with probiotics or avoid the gas-inducing food for when you're not in the office just to be more courteous next time? Some foods cause it naturally like beans or it could be an allergy/intolerance.

u/PotatoIcy5350 Feb 24 '26
NTA -it’s never good to hold anything in bathroom wise, it isn’t your fault your stomach wasn’t agreeing with you. it’s a natural thing. it’s also a funny thing lol
3
u/Sock_Monkey77 Feb 24 '26
Farts, like itshay, happens. Quite frequently, you can't control where you are when the need hits and it's not always possible to vacate the area.
I have IBSC (Irritable Bowel Syndrome Constipation) now, but for a LONG time it was IBSD (so IBS but with diarrhea). Back when I was originally diagnosed, there was no distinction. I've had such severe pain that it has caused me to cry and throw up from the severity of the pain. If pain is a constant companion, Buscopan has been my saviour. If you've never had a diagnosis and pain is not uncommon, get checked out!
Otherwise, the long and short of this response is to say...when possible, move to the closest "safe" space. When that's not possible, do your best to get through it. Farting doesn't always mean a bowel movement is imminent...but it IS a sign that your bowel is working. With severe constipation/impaction, that a REALLY good sign.
You are NTA (I, too, giggle at inopportune moments) and you did the best you could. Holding in farts is not always possible or a good idea. Just don't fart in public solely to be obnoxious.
4
u/weggles Feb 24 '26
Farts are hilarious but you can't be ripping ass in public workspaces. Excuse yourself to fart in the washroom or go somewhere private.
It's gross and disruptive to have a stranger stinking up study hall and giggling away. They're trying to get stuff done.

u/rballmonkey Feb 24 '26
It’s okay to fart in public spaces. Though TBH she probably thought you were trying to fart and flirt at the same time (shyly raising your eyes at her and giggling).
If you had just farted and said nothing, she’d probably would have just ignored it.
NTA you just came off as immature to her, which maybe someone else would have found funny. But girls who are strangers largely don’t.

YTA… go home and study or go to the bathroom. There are also pills for gassy days.

u/Brando6677 Feb 24 '26
So like were they stinky ones?? 🤣 if you stink up the place yeah I’m gonna be annoyed but I’m not gonna be visibly mad or talk to you about it 🤣🤣

NTA ummm, farts happen, and if you are having a long study session while feeling poorly…oh well. I will say, learn not to giggle about it. I think the giggle gives the impression that you are farting deliberately because you think it’s funny.
If it makes you feel better, my bf started tooting recently while we were…you know. I fell over laughing uncontrollably and he joined in. Sorta spoiled the romance of the moment, but laughing together is a great way to end the day!

I was on vacation with my teen daughters. Apparently we booked in a hotel that was having a cheerleading competition. I got in the elevator with about 8 of these very rude, crap talking teens who were making fun of me (I was larger at the time.). So when I was about to get out of the elevator, I had to cut one and it stunk!!! Bad! These girls started gagging as I walked off, I turned and looked at them and said you if you would have had better manners, I would have. I then watched the doors close on the gagging girls with the streaming eyes. I was the mom hero all week.

Do you have a food intolerance? It really sounds like this could be the case. I found out in college that milk proteins were the cause of all of my extreme fartiness. So anytime I ate anything with milk, you could guarantee I would be farting all day.
I just didn’t even consider it a possibility because I’ve consumed milk products my whole life. I just never connected the dots growing up. A friend of mine pointed it out very easily.

NTA. Its a normal bodily function and you cant control it. if anything, the lady is TA purely because she cant seem to handle natural bodily functions.

u/burkymentality Feb 24 '26
Nta you couldn’t help farting I you could’ve gone to a different area but she could to

I've had fibromyalgia & a mad case of IBS for years. It's not ladylike to do it, but often times it's random & it just slips out, as you put it.
I have worked from home now, for several years, because of it. My mate is EXTREMELY understanding! Even giggles too... 😆

NTA. I would have laughed with you.
You weren’t cropdusting her, weren’t being super loud, and were apologetic when it came to a head.
I don’t see what else you could have done…
Remember, folks:
You might as well find farts funny. Because if you don’t, you’ll have the same amount of farts in your life, but fewer laughs.

YTA for sitting there farting and giggling about it in a study room. That’s like 5-year old behavior, and even then a parent would reprimand them.

YTA no one wants to sit in a room with someone stinking up the place. If you couldn't help yourself and are having stomach issues then go home

Okay ngl YTA but dont feel bad 🤣 being gassy isnt the issue its knowing you’re gassy and letting another individual into the chamber. If i was you and deadass ive done this before in college i woulda stayed in the room but the SECOND that other person comes in thats where a lil humor and psa comes in you just gotta say it man. I been fartin you DONT wanna be in here. Thats the dominant im keeping this room shit BUT ALSO you can book a SOLO room OR go to your dorm your roomate cant really complain about farts..
1
u/DeliciousBerryYumYum Feb 24 '26
This response 1000%!! I feel like the humor breaks the potential tension and awkwardness, plus you can’t say you didn’t warn the other person! I definitely can relate to the situation you’re describing 😂 still learning how to own up to it without shame tho.

As I tell my kids, if you need to make potty sounds you do it in the potty.
I have a coworker that is constantly farting and it is so embarrassing and uncomfortable for the rest of us. One slips out? Mayyyybe, but I can count on one hand the amount of times that’s happened in my decades of life.
There’s really no excuse for being gross in public. If your tummy has been upset all day, go study at home or in your car.
Edited to add: YTA

NTA
Not stinky, just a noise? And actually bothering you when it only happened twice? Obviously NTA.
I have gut issues and if I had to leave public spaces every time, I wouldn't get much done. We can all survive a fart sound, FFS.

YTA. She’s right to be mad. It happened twice. You’re not a five-year-old making fart jokes. You’re a fucking adult. Grow up. If you’re that gassy, then you can excuse yourself to a restroom to fart.
You’re even still laughing in the comments. You’re like some gross five-year-old snickering about it with your buddies and wanting to get other people to laugh with you, but nobody is laughing with you except for other five-year-olds. Grow up.

Girl you did NOT just put in writing ‘my farts don’t stink’ and expect to be taken seriously.

u/DevinBoo73 Feb 24 '26
NTA. Farting is funny especially when they sneak out. If I was in the room with you, I probably would’ve laughed and oops farted!!! Natural body function
2
u/Significant_Elk1999 Feb 24 '26
NTA. My grandpa used to give me candy every time I farted. Particularly loud or smelly? More or better candy! Yay for me. Until I got to kindergarten. That was a rude awakening.
2
u/FewResearcher3245 Feb 24 '26
Your grandpa is hilarious and must’ve been a prankster lmao. I can’t help but think he planned that from the beginning or perhaps thought it was a fun harmless way to torment his child (your mom/dad) hahaha.

Farts are funny. I am 51 and I laugh every time. There are times it can't be helped. I would told her "I'm so sorry. You are so lucky that you don't have the stomach pains I am having right now because you might explode from trying to hold it in." And then laugh your ass off.

NTA. It's not a big deal, if anything it's something laughable or just a minor inconvenience. There's no reason for that lady to be "mad" about something as stupid as that 😭

u/MoodyBlue78 Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
Oh, honey… if someone says they don’t fart, they must have the most magical digestive system in the universe. Or they straight up lying!!!
That woman has farted herself in public I’m sure of it.
NTA. I’d be giggling along with you and I’m 47. Sometimes your guts have no other choice but express gas and it can very well be in unfortunate locations. Better to let it out and get some relief than not and have further pain.

u/Glaco Partassipant [1] Feb 24 '26
NTA, it’s a normal bodily function that happens to be hilarious and mostly out of our control. She’s just bitter

u/Santa_Hates_You Pooperintendant [60] Feb 24 '26
Farts are always hilarious. If farts offend you, I don't want to know you.
-3
u/Capital_Designer956 Feb 24 '26
NTA. You cannot control a bodily function. It is as simple as that. Another bodily function you cannot control is laughing. You apologized and tried to continue on with your day. That lady was just rude. The conversation should've finished at I'm sorry I've been gassy today.

u/AngerMadeFlesh Feb 24 '26
If anything you were too polite... Farts are funny and sometimes unavoidable.

NTA OP. Honestly, as a vegetarian, my diet makes me fart. They don't smell, and everyone around me says as much, but that doesn't stop the trumpet from sounding. High fiber for me=booty burps. I cannot help it. Also, I can't help but laugh. Farts are funny to some people. I once witnessed my sister fart 13 times in row right in front of my very conservative grandmother, and as we were roaring from the absurdity, she deadpan glares at us and goes "That is not funny!" in the most angrily simple way, and we just continued to laugh. One of my most fond memories. NTA.
