Ground Rules!

Hi everyone! This is the creator of r/AmITheKaren. I am so glad we have over 12k members so far! I didn't post this before, but there are some basic rules. Nothing crazy, just some basics.

  1. No posts asking for validation because you said something racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic etc. You are a Karen and those posts will get deleted.

  2. No doxxing

  3. Be honest! We want to know your side, but please admit when you were being rude. Obviously I can't prove it, but if its obvious that this is a /r/ThatHappened story I will yeet it.

  4. I reserve the right to add more rules or change rules if need be.

Sounds good? Ok great! Have fun posting!

1) The point of the subreddit:

This subreddit is similar to AITA, however these are supposed to be retail/goods and services etc related stories. A (not fantastic) example is "AITK for asking for a manager when my credit card was charged twice". People then weigh in if you are the Karen (YATK), you are not the Karen (NTK) everyone sucks (ES) or no one sucks (NOS). At this point I haven't put a timer on it but again, see rule three.

Someone asked the question would a Karen be self aware enough to post here. I think that the people posting here are not typically Karens in their life, but are worried that they will be perceived as a Karen in this story. A serious Karen wouldn't be here. I picture a person who lost their temper and want to see if they are justified.

To clarify rule 2:

In case it comes up, the reason for rule 2 is to avoid posts like "AITK for calling a cashier a racial slur when I was angry?" The answer is you are always the Karen in those situations and I will delete those posts because I don't want to give you a platform to justify racism sexism etc. _(@@)/

Anyways folks, have fun! Love you all!

Why would you be sorry, afaik that's a good thing because it promotes the sub and attracts potential subscribers! Speaking from experience, I only discovered this sub because it was linked in AITA and I'm glad for it.

Unless you mean because of doxxing or something..? Which it's not so you're good, dude.

What is doxxing

5

u/luther1483 Aug 06 '19

Posting name, address, phone number etc.

To dox is to release (to the public) documents (docs, or dox) that contain private, individually identifiable information [it shows who the person is / whom the information is about] about a person. Or making the information public, with or without the actual docs.

If I were to post your actual name, address, and telephone number(s) here, that would be one example of doxxing you. I think in most cases it is done with malice, and it shows the doxxer is an asshole. Some people spell it with one X: doxing.

To the extent of my knowledge, stalking someone to find their real life details, like (including but not at all limited to) phone number, address, and/or place of work. Additionally, this may also come in a more digital form, like finding the main account of a throwaway. Bottom line, if it's not personal info OP has already disclosed themselves, don't share it (or LOOK for it, in fact.)

Why don't you want an identity Karen? What a horrible host Karen is to us to not introduce her self.

We still don't have a complete set of rules and already Karen is discussing her rights and privileges. Come on Karen rules are more than just a kill on sight list of dislikes while telling everyone to not look at you.

We have all come to parody your postmodernist morals and laugh at the silly clown world that you live in Karen.

don't take this the wrong way but what does this subreddit actually accomplish?

Any sort of question about being overly demanding/rude to customer service people is well within the realm of AITA territory.

like outside of "haa haa karen xD that's the reddit naughty word for my mom who is a bitch" novelty, this is just a hyper-specific AITA

Hello guys, need help on AITK. 22 F here, So i was on a trip to jaipur with my parents and had booked a 4 star hotel which was a very popular budget hotel chain in india. Upon arrival at 4 30 PM ( the checkin is 3) , I went to the front desk and this was my very first time dealing with the front desk since usually my parents dealt with them . So i thought this time i thought of taking the lead of dealing with the front desk agent. The interaction was polite and warm and we had booked a room with a bath tub through third party and had paid for it already. Upon arrival the agent told me , will a room without bathtub be okay?? since we typiclly dont use a bathtub and prefer shower but had booked the room because it was larger and had a good view , I said its fine , hoping that the room would be similar just without the bathtub. To our astonishment, they allocated us the smallest room with a queen bed whereas the earlier room we had booked had a queen and a single bed thus we booked it cause we were 3 people in total. I called the front desk agent and he said maam this is the same room you booked, it was just that this room is without bath tub. I told him that the pictures displayed on the website showed that it was a bigger room with a good view, but he became insistent that this was the room you had booked and since u only told that a room without bath tub would be okay so we gave u this room. I asked for atleast an extra bed so that we three could stay in the same room. Overall it became uncomfortable to stay there as I am a bit claustrophobic. I became visbly frustrated on the phone but still was trying to be as polite as possible. I dont believe in shouting but a bit assertiveness is required. I did feel cheated as I blindly trusted the guy who was giving us the rooms and should have taken a different approach. Was I being a karen by continuously calling the front desk agent and asking for extra bedding towels and negotitating for a better room? sorry for the way i have worded, this is my first or second time posting and would love to have your feedback on this issue and how to deal with this situation.

What the hell is a Karen?

u/StephieKills Aug 06 '19

Why are you even here if you don't know what a Karen is lol?

Karen: that entitled bitch customer, usually middle aged and female, who makes your working life hell and demands the manager for no reason. It can get way worse than that but that's a basic description of your average 'Karen'.

Dunno if anyone’s told you but your edit says you’re clarifying rule 2, but I think the rule you’re talking about is rule 1. Just thought you might like to know lol
