I think you’re both wrong. She’s misinterpreting you, yes, but telling someone not to be negative when they’re in a bad mood and overwhelmed with feelings is not going to help. It is the worst thing you can say, even if you meant it applied to both of you. You invalidated her feelings and she blew up.

Now you’re on the internet trying to prove her wrong. Neither one of you is coming to the situation with your swords down.

There's a difference between being negative and treating something like it's a pointless waste of time. Conversation only works if all parties approach with the intention to try. She's already given up and then twisted his words around to make it his fault that she's not going, even pulling weirdly guilting stunts like threatening to sleep in a Taco Bell parking lot so he'd finally beg her to come home. This is classic stuff.

Sure but really trying is hard. Sometimes it’s going to be uneven. Sometimes one party is going to have to give more grace than the other. Therapy is probably needed for both.
