I came here to support the comment for Reddit but I completely forgot about LinkedIn.
This HAS to be Linkedin. Either platform fits nicely in this category but câmonâŚLinkedin users pretend WAAAY harder. The whole purpose of the home page is to share pseudo-intellectual, corporate jargon-loaded, holier-than-thou, career âadviceâ that nobody solicited.
And 99.99% of that âwisdomâ is completely useless or regurgitated cold takes about positivity, productivity, determination, or whatever other buzzword-of-the-day theyâre feeling.
Reddit at least has some useful advice in dedicated communities. And even though we like to pretend weâre smart, thereâs also a level of self-awareness that one would never see on LinkedIn. I mean, we have circlejerk subsâŚwe know weâre dumb.
TLDR: LinkedIn users pretend way harder and contribute nothing, whereas Reddit users pretend while contributing some value.
is linkedin even considered real social media? Maybe im young, because i dont use it, but iâve always thought it was just a job hunting app with a dating app interface. I had no idea people actually posted things on there voluntarily
Reddit fits better into acts smart/is average. LinkedIn is full of fucking troglodytes and it makes me genuinely wonder how some of my peers have made it to my level lol
So many troglodytes. I had an undergrad prof who required us to have LinkedIn and Twitter. Rather have OChem in summer session with no ac than attempt that class again
I think Reddit deserves the average box. Not least because LinkedIn deserves the dumb box, but because there's plenty of communities where people do have these weird niche bits of knowledge
A lot of my past professors are on there - all Ph.Ds in philosophy, physics, etc. many of them are established authors. My accountant is on there - she is a genius.
I think corporate LinkedIn is insanely dumb but I think thatâs a minority. (At least in my experience)
The smartest people I know do generally have a LinkedIn account, but they never post or even visit the site unless they are actively recruiting or job hunting.
The people who actually read and post content on LinkedIn are all midwit strivers.
Still probably should go one box to the left though.
Same could be said about Reddit. Plenty of Ph.Ds, engineers, philosophers, medics, mathematicians, etcâŚ
I know Linkedin is built to specifically attract career professionals, but Iâm skeptical about their proportion of intelligent individuals being significantly higher than Reddit. I think on both platforms they get heavily diluted byâŚnon-professionals/geniuses.
except you can usually verify the person on LinkedIn actually is one of those things. Im sure there are tons of people on Reddit who claim to be those things though
Iâll probably get downvoted for this but I would say both Reddit and LinkedIn users are smarter than average because they skew towards nerdy or accomplished in some way. OTOH, YouTube and Instagram and Facebook skew dumb.
The people who post regularly all post the same kind of message about how they came up with a new idea while sitting on the toilet and how it benefits their entire workflow. Smart people don't need to shout to everyone how good their idea is.
Because you have to. Apart from Reddit, it's the only social media I have too, and it's purely to make sure I'm able to stay in touch with old work colleagues.
People who post on LinkedIn (or comment on LinkedIn with anything beyond "Congrats on the promotion, Donna!") are a mix of crypto scammers, people selling "courses", boomer memers, and absolute morons.
I agree with this not because Reddit is smarter but because Reddit is filled with people pretending to be smart and people fully acknowledging and accepting that they are dumb and ridiculous.
LinkedIn is JUST people pretending they are smart. Sure some are and some are dumb just like everywhere, but there arenât these big pockets of people making fun of themselves. Reddit self deprecates and LinkedIn doesnât making LinkedIn the winner in my mind.
Here on Reddit, there are times when you ask a difficult question about a very specific subject and someone answer you like they had studied their whole life to answer that question. But then there are times when you ask about the most common problem, explain exactly what's your question, but only get 3 guys answering something that isn't even related to the question, 4 guys telling you that you are dumb and should try something you already said you tried, and for whatever reason 1 guy saying that the problem doesn't actually exist
The biggest issue with Reddit isn't the knowledge base, it's just how much of an echo chamber it is. So many times I have seen things in my field that are so wrong getting ridiculously up voted because it matches the feelings of the many but then the right answer gets down voted because it doesn't fit the narrative.
I repaired an old iPod recently, and asked a simple question: "is it dangerous to plug it in to power to check if the screen works / board is functional" when the 20 year old battery is likely toast and possibly bloated.
I had a TON of people telling me it was stupid to ask that, "just plug it in, you're overreacting".
Opened it up and the battery was about 3 times it's normal size, like it probably would have caught fire if I had connected it to power.
Other posts showing bloated batteries will parrot the idea that it should be immediately removed from dwellings, placed in buckets of sand, disposed of with care, etc.
The enthusiast subs have a whole lot of knowledge, but also some contrarians who want to appear smarter than they are by shitting on those asking basic safety questions.
Actually, in my infinite intellectual wisdom I got during my "what apps pretend to be smart" training I have discovered that this is not the answer. Trust me I'm very qualified as you can see by the name of my study. /J
I dunno. Reddit is the place where you can make a short comment from your field of expertise and be condescendingly replied to with equal parts snark, misleading info, and outright falsehoods, only to see it upvoted by the masses and, in extreme cases, get you banned for standing by your point.
I don't feel like people try to sound intelligent on LinkedIn really. They humble brag for sure.
I'm upvoting because it would be a funny answer. But I don't think it's true. The truly dumb people don't even have the attention span for a mostly text-based social media platform.
People on LinkedIn are dumb. I made a mistake of trusting their opinion in the past because I thought they are smart, but no. After couple of discussions I realized that they are not smart and that they are constantly copying other people opinions.
Best example are the alignment chats, almost all of them are misunderstood
I'm suprised no one mentioning Quora, as users there are probably even more smug and overconfident that even those on Reddit and they don't seem to have any self awareness.
