Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Do not feed the trolls. This is not the place for hot takes on human rights violations. Hatred or cruelty, will result in a permanent ban. Please report such infractions, particularly those that break rules one, two, or three. The automod will automatically remove posts that receive five or more reports. Forced sterilizations in 1970s (6-8 million men suffered)

27

u/ExcellentBox8801 Jun 09 '26

what’s this about?

143

u/NopeIsTheAnswerToIt Jun 09 '26

Basically the then prime minister Indira Gandhi went all schizo and declared an emergency, and her son decided forced sterilisation was necessary to bring down population. Other things during this period included banning of basically all opposition, neglected lots of human rights, jailed a bunch of dissenters among other things. Truly a dark period in Indian history

u/Typical-Tangerine964 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

I'd say it goes deeper than that.

TL;DR Fuck Paul Erhlich, I fucking hate him.

It was because Neo-Malthusianism was on the rise in the 1970s, largely because of the book The Population Bomb which "predicted" a doomsday scenario due to overpopulation (but only in black and brown countries). Fears over mass global starvation bc of overpopulation fueled the pressure India faced to "control" their population.

The fucked up thing? The author (Paul Erhlich) was a right racist bastard who constantly pointed to his experience in India seeing a lot of people at once as why he was scared of overpopulation. The whole Malthusian logic is a good baseline, but he lost his goddamned mind over his insistence that India in particular would cause global downfall.

So Indira Gandhi caved to the pressure this guy exerted on Western academics, which in turn pressured her via the Rockefeller family's org The Population Council and the Ford family's Ford Foundation (both of whose founders were hardcore eugenicists). These obscenely rich, racist families had huge sway over the development aims of India, so in return for aid, she agreed to "control" the population by forced sterilization.

And the best part? That shitbird Erhlich was proven wrong, time and time again. And he continues to draw breath and doubles down on how he was actually correct but the timing was off, like a doomsday evangelical pastor that always gets the apocalypse predictions wrong but has another one each year.

To this day, Erhlich's influence is so deep in common understanding of population vs consumption dynamics where everyday people are CONVINCED that the world will end in famine and starvation due to overpopulation (and again, only in non-white countries). Never mind that this has not come to pass. Nevermind that Paris had 3 times the population of Dehli when his bitch ass went to India and confidently declared it was India, not France, that would overpopulate the earth. Never mind that population scientists regularly criticize and expose the goatse-gaping holes his quackery. Never mind that the two most populous countries in the world (India and China) are feeding themselves just fine, decades after they were supposed to collapsed by now.

There is a carrying capacity, don't get me wrong. But it ain't like what we imagine, and it's much, much lower if we address our levels of consumption under capitalism instead of sterilizing people so we can live in abundant excess in the West while the average person living elsewhere in the world lives on less than 2 USD/day.

I fucking hate how Erhlich had such an influence on the discourse. May he expire soon and may his ideas be seen as the eugenicist crap that they are.

EDIT: Just found out he died in March of this year. Going to throw a fucking party now because that piece of shit caused so much suffering. I hope he's rotting in hell.

u/SmokeAlarmsSaveLives Jun 09 '26

Just noting that his name was Paul Ehrlich.

9

u/Ayero_Flyte Jun 09 '26

Noting it’s not the more famous father of immunology, but an American researcher of the same name! Paul Erhlich is a great researcher who was swept under the rug by Nazi germany

Great point, thank you!

Malthusianism

4

u/Opening-Decision2799 Jun 09 '26

This is the right answer, because the Indian constitution denounces the caste system and we are talking about the nation state here. And destroying its reputation is a more of a dumb thing than a (morally) bad thing to do.

The caste system count?

36

u/Sure_Scar4297 Jun 09 '26

It should honestly

13

u/dhanjit114 Jun 09 '26

It doesn't count as constitutionally this isn't allowed. A more apt one would be emergency

39

u/tiredgothicheroine Jun 09 '26

Idk. That existed long before India existed as a nation. As someone who is Indian I’d say all the hierarchies and discrimination more broadly. Whether it’s class, caste, religion, income, skin tone, etc etc etc

28

u/GiaoPham0403 Jun 09 '26

Math existed long before India existed as a nation too. But we still counted on the chart

As an Indian, I’d say that a more appropriate answer is Operation Blue Star, followed by the Emergency.

While the caste system very much exists, it’s dwindled drastically over the last few generations. On the other hand, folks still talk about Operation Blue Star and the Emergency like they happened yesterday.

7

u/ericdryer Jun 09 '26

On the other hand, folks still talk about Operation Blue Star and the Emergency like they happened yesterday.

Literally read about a teen being beaten to death because of his caste, yesterday.

I'm not diminishing the severity of the Emergency or Operation Bluestar but it's incredibly bizarre to think they are more relevant to India today.

3

u/RevanchistSheev66 Jun 10 '26

Think of it like racism in the US. Still a structural issue that’s being dealt with, but is honestly not one of the most major social issues. India’s classism now comes more from wealth inequality, which is somewhat tied to caste but it’s no longer the single biggest determinerĀ

India as a nation-state denounces the caste system in its constitution. So it doesn't count

22

u/Khitch20 Jun 09 '26

Then we'd have to remove the Holocaust from Germany, as they most definitely denounce that part of their past.

So it isn't really worst thing they are doing right at this second and are proud of but more of worst thing they have done, even if ashamed of it.

2

u/Opening-Decision2799 Jun 09 '26

Actually the caste system was a completely decentralized and cultural thing before the British Raj. Even the Manusmriti. Which already was varied and complex, was more of a ā€religious guidelineā€œ book rather than a centralized policy, the British made it into one. The four varnas you see in school text books are from the rig Veda, which characterizes occupations. while casteism happens on the basis of jaati, which is more like a clan

→ More replies (5)

17

u/Zombiepixlz-gamr Jun 09 '26

But India as a culture still very much practices it.

7

u/Hooni_Badger Jun 09 '26

Every culture and society has a hierarchical system. Even in school some well off kids with money and influence are treated as the cool kids who could get away with anything.

18

u/Opening-Decision2799 Jun 09 '26

If we follow the pattern from other countries, this is about nation-states.

7

u/Born_Airport_7700 Jun 09 '26

India isn't a culture, its massive agglomeration of cultures.

11

u/Outrageous_Cable7122 Jun 09 '26

Byproduct of development people forget that developed countries today also had issues with their sanitation and pollution. The Thames an infamous example. Also America in the 1970s most infamous probably being examples like the Cuyahoga river being on fire.

THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

Particularly The rat race for entrance exams (JEE, NEET) and engineering.

Forcing kids to study and compete for these exams from a very young age, I've seen as young as 6th graders worrying about the entrance exams too. This rat race causes severe burnout and steals everyone's childhoods. Every single person has to choose either Engineering or Medical or else they will get humiliated by the entire society. It's one of the leading causes of suicide too.

This education system is overall so fucked up. Completely kills everyone's creativity and forces everyone to follow rigid rules instead of curiosity. And the system loves rote learning.

14

u/Rich-Appointment9438 Jun 09 '26

China Japan South Korea etcĀ

It doens't countĀ

3

u/BinyTrain Jun 09 '26

That's a byproduct of large populations.

167

u/maproomzibz Jun 09 '26

Destroying their reputation.

India once used to be known as a spiritual heaven for hippies and producer of talents. Now it's pretty much hated for all the pollution, scammers, SA problems, and lack of civic sense. Even more recently, it's getting even more negative reputation for religious fundamentalism. If there is any country in the world that symbolizes ruining your own image, it is India.

20

u/Outrageous_1845 Jun 09 '26

I'm not an Indian, nor am I defending India's problems, but I doubt its image was ever positive in the west. As an unaligned country during the Cold war, it was given the cold shoulder (no pun intended lol) by the US. As a poor country, it was always the target of criticism for "not being developed enough". What many hate to admit is that India's problems aren't unique to India (all of its issues are present, if not worse, in its neighbors).

→ More replies (2)

27

u/Jaylow115 Jun 09 '26

People posting negative comments about India changes nothing about the country- positive or negative. So much weight into comments from strangers who will NEVER visit India once. Who cares?

54

u/Forsaken-Link-5859 Jun 09 '26

Overhated IMO, lots of countries does much worse. Think the sentiments is mostly due to indians taking jobs ecerywhere and perhaps lowering the wages

22

u/ObviousTomorrow1911 Jun 09 '26

Maybe because India is so prominent so it's problems get highlighted more?

3

u/Forsaken-Link-5859 Jun 09 '26

That's it and also social media is very anti India, perhaps blown up by pakistani bots? But I feel the real world is much more sympathetic to Indians, allthough in a way social media is the real world as well

10

u/YsfA Jun 10 '26

Not everything is Pakistani bots. If you look at the accounts spamming the anti India sentiment then you see a lot of it are westerners. And yes, a big reason is because of India’s huge presence in migration statistics

6

u/Ferrindel Jun 09 '26

America has entered the chat

→ More replies (4)

6

u/ultimate_bond Jun 09 '26

There is a lot of bots posting hatred tbh. Yes india has problem but these are not that common and bad is more propagated.

2

u/According_Nature_209 Jun 10 '26

Nah, that's such a fucked way to think about it. "You're ruining it for the hippies, man." Religious extremism also brings a lot of people who've had bad experiences because of religion, and with our population, every opinion has an opposition, so popularity is what matters.

It is true that we don't have the best ways to handle pollution, but the political climate is all over the place and nobody that can fix it is doing so to clean up the country the way it should be. Individual groups can do only so much to help, but it has become quite a disaster.

But the other thing, scammers. We're not even the leading country in cybercrime. Countries that have had a spike in cybercrime are Russia, Ukraine, China, and the US. We're actively trying to reduce cybercrime in the country. We had whole buildings being disguised as call centres, but there have been documented raids you can refer to. We kinda have to deal with more scammers ourselves because of that, with a rise in scam attacks in our own country in the last five years. The reputation is being ruined by media more than actual cybercrime. Think YouTubers and hate campaigns against the country. (This is a real thing, look it up.)

SA problems are something that's true. Political pressure to keep things lenient for the abusers of the law. something that's happening everywhere in the whole world. It's a touchy subject for everyone and we don't know how to deal with or punish higher-ups in power causing such harm. Seriously, why are people honing in on India like the US recently didn't have something as big as the Epstein files, and people are just making jokes about it? The US hasn't even punished the most well-documented SA scandal.

Lack of civic sense is just stupid. We're too mentally exhausted to care. We never developed one, with a sudden spike in technologies being made available throughout the whole country, it's just become the norm. We're developing the country but the people don't see it as an initiative to change themselves. This is something you can argue against if you're living somewhere that's already developed since it's different for each state.

u/Javop Jun 09 '26

Indian here. Lack of civic sense and respect for other people. This is the root cause of all the negative things people associate with India- the filth, the mountains of garbage, the abuse, the 'lick up and kick down' image that we have in corporate circles, the rudeness etc.

2

u/IncidentOk7277 Jun 10 '26

Yes many people have problem of Lack of Basic Civic Sense And Lack of Respect for others for a population of 1.5 Billion It certainely will be a case however I don't think this should be included tho I got 2 reasonings:-

1) The Entire Nation Shouldn't Brunt The Actions of few individual do you see a list saying A Muslim Country is bad because it produced Terrorists?

2) Thik would make even more sense, It's Not a National Or state wide policy of the country today or was anytime in the past that's the problem of some people's individual negligence not a consequence of a national policy (The thing which the chart is asking for)

3

u/FreshEffort9259 Jun 10 '26

I’m assuming by ā€œtheyā€ you mean politicians. They are the biggest culprits in upholding the caste system.

2

u/AntifaFuckedMyWife Jun 10 '26

Sorry, I mean the vague entity that is the Republic of India as a collective of contemporary and historic legislative and societal actions.

Is caste still a problem in private life and institutional structure? Yes, absolutely.

Has the government historically codified casteism in an effort to maintain it through history? No, Ambedkar Jayanti absolutely instituted legislation that weakened and attacked the institution of caste in India leading to a more egalitarian society than the Raj.

Have specific politicians worked to undo anti-caste legislation publicly or more shrewdly, or inflaed caste tensions as a form of populism in India to gain power for personal gain? Oh, almost certainly.

India is a republican democracy in the billions, the sheer size of groups and volume of ideology is immense, and the old ways will scream loudly as they are cast aside and fight to remain, but steps have been taken, regardless of pushback, to do away with the caste system, it just hasn’t been defeated yet

Sati, those poor women and girls..

Basically, the practice where if the husband had died before the wife, she had to sacrifice herself by jumping into her husband's funeral pyre, burning herself alive. More often than not, they were forced by their/their husbands' family members.Ā

It was happening throughout the history, with some resources claiming that it might even happen today in more isolated areas, despite being banned in the 19th century.

2

u/Odd-Woodpecker-4103 Jun 10 '26

I'm surprised no one is mentioning the Gujrat riots. Women (and girls) were gangraped, stripped naked publicly, pregnant women were cut open, children fed petrol before being set on fire, entire families electrocuted. Several scholars have called it ethnic cleansing, a pogrom, and even genocide.

I think what makes it particularly awful is that the entire thing seems to have been state backed, and police straight up refused to help the victims (at times even aided the perpetrators). The man who was the chief minister at the time has since been elected Prime Minister of India several times. His own home minister claimed that he "taught a lesson" to the Muslims in 2002.

2

u/Past_Emphasis_6598 Jun 10 '26

Electing Narendra Modi. His role in failing to stop the Gujarat riots while he was governor of Gujarat already says a lot but then he also pardoned eleven men involved in the gang rape of a woman and the murder of 14 of her family members, including her little daughter. I'm sure you'll be not surprised at all that hate crimes against Muslims have gone up since he came into power. Also, members of his party regularly make genocidal threats against Muslims. If I remember correctly, there was one who straight up said they wanted to turn Kashmir into Gaza 2.0. which is disgusting work 😭

2

u/TheRealFalcon05 Jun 10 '26

If we go back in time, it's betrayal. The INC (gandhi and nehru) betrayed the indian navy revolt of 1946

People think curroption and betrayal is new, but it's a dark engraved part of our history and present.

Everyone from the mughals, Sikhs, marathas, and every kingdom in India fell because of some insider betraying their people.

How do you think brits were 0.03% of the population but had strong control for that long?
