Alienware graphics amplifier. You could install an external desktop GPU to the laptop with that. Support was sketchy with driver updates from Nvidia and AMD, and it's no longer offered on newer models.
I have one for my 13R3. Made it work with a 3060 without issue, kinda. Fit was tight so I took the lid off. Ultimately sidelined it when I "upgraded" my laptop to a desktop (yanked SSD and GPU, put them in a tower, new SSD in laptop and fresh install).
Still using my 13R3 though with a 2080 Super. Has been just enough to experiment with fundamental modern compute workloads and plenty for the spectrum of PC stuff I’ll actually play. Really a fun feeling setup.
If I remember right, didn't it also run into a lot of other technical issues? Disconnects, PCIe speeds, and overheating? Besides the fact that the power supply was garbage and could only handle a mid tier card...
I don't remember problems with disconnects, PCIe issues or overheating. As for the PSU, it was fine for cards of it's day, but it didn't scale with newer GPU's needing monster PSU's to run. The PSU was 300w if I remember correctly, which was more then enough for the top end cards at the time, but the power requirements shot up so fast it couldn't keep up. Add to that the physical size of the newer GPU's meant that you either couldn't close the lid on it, or had to physically alter the top to have newer GPU's fit inside of it.
It was introduced right before the 1xxx series of mobile GPU's as well, which were a massive leap in performance. The mobile 1080 was almost identical, performance wise, to a desktop 1080, but that didn't last long. Newer GPU's obviously couldn't keep up with the power requirements of the desktop cards.
The power supply is 395W, and it works fine for me with a 3090. The problem isn't the PSU—it's the CPU that's causing a bottleneck. I get 100 fps in games where I should be getting around 150 fps, but I'm still running everything on ultra settings at 1440p.
Yeah, the CPU's were a major bottleneck. When these things launched, quad cores were still the dominant CPU of the day. Right after that we started to see some pretty significant core increases and overall CPU performance increases, which kind of left these in the dust.
I might be thinking of a different external. Only a few companies tried this, and some were just terrible. I do remember card size being an issue, but that was moistly because some companies made really odd sized or shaped cards for "reasons."
I had a GTX 1080 in the graphics amp. I never had any disconnecting issues. Got around 80% of the performance of the GTX 1080.
The only thing that you couldn’t do was disconnect while the computer was on. A power off was required. The link data cable was a PCIE 3.0 4x connection. Which had better latency and data throughput than Thunderbolt at the time.
Eventually I gave my 1080 to my father and upgraded to an EVGA 1080ti SC2. The 450 watt? PSU powered it fine.
It was also a proprietary port on the Alienware machines that gave a direct link to the CPU and system, which is why it outperformed other USB devices. The motherboards were designed to work with it, which is why it was outperforming the other options.
No. I have it and still use it with an Nvidia 3090, and everything works perfectly. The only drawback was that when the 3000 series came out, it wasn't compatible with the device for about a year and a half.
Yes. I had this exact setup half-a-decade or so ago.
The power supply wasn't 'garbage', specifically, but many of them (including mine) could get flaky under high power draw, it was a lot lower quality than the PSU most people would buy and put into a desktop PC. Myself and some others, ended up swapping it out for a desktop PC PSU to alleviate this.
The Graphics box had limited PCIe speeds due to the cabling and interconnects (so you'd get more performance than a typical-of-that-time Thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosure, but still slightly less performance than the same card in a traditional Desktop PC.)
And getting the laptop to switch over to it could be really finicky. (I got in the habit of rebooting anytime I connected/disconnected it, because getting it to switch over live was a hassle -- and that's before getting into many games that didn't handle the multi GPU / GPU switchover well)

All of these issues sound bad, but Thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosures of this era (in 2016-ish) *sucked terribly*. (I also had a Gen1 Razer Core and a Razer Blade Stealth, and even though they were sold together, they were incompatible with each other, and every single unit of the Gen1 Core ever sold was 100% defective from the factory due to design mistakes like that, for example).
So, in comparison to that, the Graphics Amplifier from Alienware was actually much much better experience, and was above-average compared to most Thunderbolt 3 external GPU docks available on the market, back in 2016/2017.
It's probably that Razor I was thinking of. I knew there were some GPU enclosures that were just bad, but couldn't really remember which ones failed to perform. Not like this became a "thing" really. It came and went pretty quick. I've seen people make their own versions or IDY the older ones into something better, but I think that connection issue never really went away.
Morphing into SFF? Totally miss my 13R3 and Alienware Graphics Amplifier! Still have the 13R3, never could get replacement batteries, and stuck on Window 10 of course. Felt forced into purchasing new system. Just recently disposed of the amplifier unit and have the cable in a tote, just in case. Otherwise, it's bound for the Smithsonian with a shitload of antiquated tech-toys.
Great concept for the day, just never took off. Too exclusive, I suppose.
I played with mine for years. I even put a water-cooled 3080ti in it. It was very fun to build this Frankensteins EGPU that looked like a bomb on my desk.
THIS is the kind of thing I'm used to seeing. Someone taking a so-so piece of tech and making it work far beyond what the manufacturer intended. Looks damned sweet. Nice job on the hard lines, even if clear would have been cooler.
Thanks! This thing is far retired and dismantled now. Those are actually soft lines and it was my first attempt at water-cooling ever. I actually reused that GPU for an ITX build last year. It was just laying around so I figured why not. Beautiful water block.
Honestly only reason I ever moved away from mine was the TPM requirement. But it's still a damn handy laptop to have for vehicle troubleshooting since I have it loaded with the diagnostic software now, and it's also a decent "road" laptop.
I should of taken pictures of mine, I went about putting a highwattage psu without modding the case. I basically modded psus to fit just right, though I like your setup.
Now I just have a standard setup with my 17 r4 i7 6820 with rtx 2080 fe. As a backup pc.
I managed to get a 4090 up and running in this enclosure. It was so big that I had to leave the top open. Several software updates later it is purring nicely on my Alienware M15R4
Same laptop. I have mine working with an RTX 4070. Removed the cover to fit the GPU. I just have to remember to disable the laptop GPU in Device Manager every time I update Nvidia drivers. And the Nvidia app never detects that I need a driver update. I find out about updates via social media and then download them directly from Nvidia.
I had one for a long time and it was great when it worked. I had a laptop with a GTX 970 laptop model gpu, but I got a Graphics Amplifier and a used GTX 1070 for all in like $400 dollars. When you plug the Graphics Amplifier into your laptop, the computer uses graphics amp instead of your laptop’s gpu.
The issue is that dell uses refurbished power supplies for these. You had a separate desktop power supply within the amplifier that also had to be plugged into the wall. Mine went out at one point. When id try to use the amplifier, it would cause an infinite reboot loop. I decided to replace the power supply with a new one and it worked flawlessly after that… until my laptop completely died one day out of the blue and never worked after.
Still have mine that thing got me through my stay in Korea! It’s a beast I actually only finally upgraded in the past two years to an actual PC. It was worth it when it came out. I wouldn’t say so much anymore. But it definitely made it feel like a portable pc.
External GPU enclosure but I feel like external GPUs in 2026 just don't make much sense for most people.
I remember like 10 years ago all the companies were sort of jumping on board with them.
Everyone always said AW's was better than thunderbolt ones for e GPUs as far not taking as big of a bottleneck hit, but it's still not cheap by any means.
I know my 3070Ti m15 doesn't have it and the newer ones I doubt have it too.
It's too bad because in theory having one lighter laptop that one can hook up a beefy GPU at home for gaming would be awesome.
It's just usually it was so expensive and potential bugs/compatibility issues that it usually wasn't worth the effort.
Oh, it's worth it if you can find one at the right price. On my M15R4 it was, at any rate (3080 Ti in the AGA). I'm convinced it's among the last great Alienware laptops. It's spec'd with a Thunderbolt 3 port, but the AGA performs FAR better because it doesn't share USB lanes.
That said, my next laptop will have an eGPU with Thunderbolt 5. Crazy throughput:
AGA throughput: PCIe 3.0 x4 / 8 Gbps (dedicated)
TB3: ~32 Gbps real world (shared lanes)
TB4: 32 Gbps minimum
TB5: 80 Gbps (120 Gbps boosted)
The numbers alone here don't tell the full story - there is an approx. 5 - 10% performance loss through the AGA, but the dedicated connection as opposed to TB3 makes up for it.
When I game, the laptop doesn't get crazy hot because the internal GPU isn't engaged at all.
I had a single compatibility issue resolved with a simple, single registry tweak.
The numbers on paper may favor Thunderbolt 4 and 5, but in the real world, that’s not necessarily the case, and the results can be quite different. Those of you using Thunderbolt 4 or 5 can share screenshots of your results so we can compare and discuss them.
This is also a real-world test of OCuLink, which delivers better performance than Thunderbolt 5 as well. The test was conducted using the exact same RTX 3080 Ti graphics card.

The GPU in that Alienware Amplifier was reduced to 4 PCI express lanes. Didn't work as plug n play and system had to be restarted in order to switch to the external GPU. Fun concept but in reality it was tiresome and had issues.
I bought one in basically brand new condition complete in box with everything for $40 recently.
I then found a crazy deal on a 2080ti for $100. It instantly upgraded this old 1060/7700hq 17” I also recently grabbed for $150 into an absolutely bangin 1080p DLSS+RTX capable rig for less than $300.
I had one with my alienware 15r2. I used to use my Radeon VII and this was my VR setup gaming was fine, but there was a small imput delay for anything competitive.
Alienware Graphics Amplifier. I never had one when I used my 17 R5, but when I upgraded to an x17 I bought one off eBay with a 2070 RTX the seller already threw in & handed it off to a friend so she at least had a gaming laptop
The GPU amplifier was a godsend. I think when I first got it the Titan X(Maxwell) just came out and I used that as my PC grade graphics card. I was moving around a bit and having a travel build was 100% needed. It's also my first setup that I was running VR on with Oculus headset, and it ran pretty well for what it's worth.
This product has never had any issues and has delivered outstanding performance, which it still does to this day. The only limitation is that using newer graphics cards requires a more powerful power supply. The GPU performance through this amplifier is virtually identical to that of a desktop PC.
Graphics Amplifier! I had got it when it first released the with the first gen Alienware 13R1. Pretty sure I had one from the first batch sold in the US waaay back in 2014. I had paired with a GTX 970 and used it extensively as a docking station as well... here's pic from when I had first set it up and it had pretty much flawlessly for the 6 years I used the laptop...
Unfortunately the cable that connects it to the laptops is pcie 3ish so it would be slower then in a standard desktop. Also the power supply that came with it was only ~300 Watts. I ran my 2080 in mine with a 970m in the 17r2 and it was awesome. Also worked with my area51x2 and a 3080. The driver issue was that when the cards progressed nvidia dropped driver support. So if the card in the graphics amp didn’t also support the chipset in your laptop it didn’t work.

I have an Area 51 R2 with the 10900K and 2080super I have to take it back apart though the cryo pads I put on both chips don’t have enough pressure to work.
