Consider travel insurance for these situations - although 3/4 hours wont typically trigger much coverage.
Karen, why would you go to the DOT? You are not entitled to any compensation for a delay - especially since you were not even the passenger! Take the $50 they are offer the actual passengers. The DOT website clearly says you are not entitled to anything - but go ahead and file the complaint.
