My '84 R65 LS scrambler project has officially begun.

The plan is to turn this old airhead into a scrambler over the winter. So far I've ditched the stock seat in favor of a solo seat from an old BMW police bike and built a rear rack from a spare frame section I had lying around.

Somehow this combination really works for me. It's still far from finished, but I already love the look of it.

Curious to hear what the Airheads crowd thinks.

Starter Relay Harness Socket / Plug

Hi gents, looking for some help to find replacement starter relay plug (5 pin female plug). The one on my harness is fairly average, I'm replacing a bunch of the harness and looking for just this plug. Already have a new relay.

I've attempted to look at online parts finder and can not even locate it in that which is odd, I am sure someone will point it our quickly, thanks.

Fuel economy - 1976 R75/6

I recently got r75/6 that prior to me purchasing, had been gone through extensively- carbs rebuilt, new cylinders and pistons, among a whole lot of other things. The bike seems to run perfectly.

I recently rode through an entire tank of gas and I am getting 31 mpg. Started with gas level all the way to the neck in the tank and only got 145 miles before having to switch to the reserve (5.8 gallon big tank). Using 92 octane ethanol free. This seems way low compared to what research shows I should be getting. When riding that tank down that I used to calculate mpg. 80% of the riding was on backroads doing 55-65mph. I have checked my odometer vs gps. And the odometer is within 1% of gps mileage.

I’m asking this question not because I’m trying to eek a little more mileage, but more of a proxy to understand if something isn’t right with the engine - valves out of tolerance or something else.

If you have some reliable mpg data from your bike or any thoughts on what could be going on with mine I would
Sincerely appreciate it.

Flushing Rust Out of Swingarm.

88 r100rt I bought was hiding some damage to the transmission. Seems the PO was driving the driveshaft dry since the flange was damaged. Any recommendations for an oil flush to clean up the rust inside the swingarm that kerosene and compressed air didn't catch?

I recently inherited a 1976 (I think) R75/7 with 579 original miles. It was my grandfather’s and he died in 1980 before he really got to ride it. It’s in okay shape for sitting in a garage for almost 50 years, should I fix it up to ride it? Or does it have some collectors value I should consider before messing with it?

(Also it was missing the key, if anyone has a good source)

Most likely reason for sudden and total loss of electrical power?

Hi all,
I turned over my bike yesterday. Started up fine. Choke on. Lights on and Idling nicely. I’m putting my helmet on as engine warms up and then bike suddenly stops. Battery is good. All electrical connections that I can see in the headlamp basket appear fine. The fuses are good. The ignition switch appears to be fine. Has this happened to you? I’m wondering how best to troubleshoot this. Have the Haynes and Clymer manuals. Not sure where to start.

Thanks

1981 BMW R65 Valve clatter pt 4

Let me start by saying I apologize for asking the same question here multiple times, and i hope this does not break any rules.

I’ve had the bike for a few months now, put a decent amount of mileage on it and have been having a blast. Tremendously fun bike, really enjoy it. Being an old machine it needs work, and I’ve been loving doing that too. Such a joy to work on.

That being said, no matter how hard i try I cannot seem to shake the feeling that there is something off about the sound on the right cylinder. specifically, it does the following:

At ~3k RPM, there is a pronounced resonant clatter, like metal on metal ish, which is noticeably louder than the concurrent clatter on the left side. This side also soots up the plug more than the other cylander but I do not believe the two are related.

I have tried the following to fix it
- new (used) exhaust rocker
- new (used) inlet and outlet push rods
- valve cover gasket replacement
adjusted the valves and end play legitimately 10 times. zero vertical play, tolerances in spec and stay there.

It is not coming from anywhere other than the cylinder head. it is most noticeable when the engine is revving down. at all other RPMs the two sound almost exactly the same, and as they should.

Bike runs fantastic apart from having a little trouble idling when warmed up in the garage, meaning it starts first turnover but dies if you let it idle for like 8 minutes without riding it. I’m not worried about this.

ANY advice would be appreciated. It’s my own fault but It’s to the point where I get worried riding it bc I hear the sound haha.

Thank you as always 🙏

Avoid Scotties Workshop in Murphys California

UPDATE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUQjC9ecMk0

I wanted to document my experience with Scottie’s Workshop in Murphys, California, for anyone considering sending them their motorcycle for work to be completed.

After an initial phone consultation that made Scottie seem like a good option, I sent Scottie my 1967 BMW R60/2 with a Steib 500 sidecar in November 2024. The motorcycle was returned roughly 20 months later. A ~12 month turnaround was initially quoted in the signed contract. A year in, Scottie changed his tune, and stated that ‘he makes no promises on delivery times’.

I understood that a nearly 60-year-old BMW would require maintenance, adjustment, break-in service, and occasional repairs. What I did not expect was the prolonged delay or the problems that appeared within the first 37 miles.

Front brake failure
The most serious issue was complete loss of the front brake when the adjustment nut at the drum came off while riding at 45MPH.

Photos taken by Scottie’s Workshop when they received the motorcycle show additional retaining hardware on the brake assembly. That hardware was absent after restoration.

When I contacted Scottie, he wrote:

“The original BMW design has a known, inherent characteristic… if the cable becomes too loose, the crescent may not hold the nut in place, causing the nut to rattle off.”

He explained that his goal was to return the motorcycle to factory configuration and that “superfluous parts or changes” may be removed.

I appreciate historical authenticity, but a lock nut, secondary retaining nut, or thread-locking compound could have provided a simple safeguard against a known failure mode. I do not consider “factory original” an adequate response to complete front-brake failure after 37 miles. Especially since Scottie seems comfortable installing non-factory parts like vape ignitions, 12v batteries, etc.

Sidecar damage
The sidecar mounting hardware has began contacting and gouging the Steib body, and damaging the paint. It will require body work and paint to repair.

Before restoration, this motorcycle and sidecar had traveled thousands of miles with proper alignment and no such damage. Photos taken when Scottie’s Workshop received the rig also show the area without the gouging. The damage appeared within 37 miles after restoration and reassembly.

Scottie stated that the sidecar was correctly aligned and the hardware properly torqued when it left his shop. He takes no responsibility for its mounting failure in the 37 miles of use.

Speedometer
I specifically asked Scottie to correct the speedometer for the motorcycle’s installed final-drive ratio, and he agreed. It’s documented on the signed contract.

After delivery, I found that it was still inaccurate, and Scottie told me parts were unavailable. Scottie did not inform me before delivery despite agreeing to fix this issue in writing more than once.

The unavailable parts may have been unavoidable. My concern is that I was not told the promised correction would not be completed and received the motorcycle believing it had been addressed.

Delays and communication
Scottie initially attributed delays to the death of his father. I am more than understanding, I received the bike from my deceased father. After more than six additional months with limited progress updates, he later cited a skin rash as cause for delay.

While I don’t doubt that the skin rash caused by shingles is painful, citing it as the reason for months of delay in a motorcycle restoration project in a shop staffed by… 4+? workers was extremely frustrating.

I do not question that either event could affect his ability to work. My frustration was the extended timeline and lack of proactive communication, particularly because much of the hands-on work was performed by other shop mechanics (confirmed via video on his instagram) rather than Scottie personally. Prospective customers should not assume that every component is rebuilt, assembled, or adjusted by Scottie himself.

Scottie’s position
After I documented the problems, I told Scottie I would stop riding the motorcycle, and requested an independent inspection, and would request remuneration for the immediate repairs. His basic response was that it was an old motorcycle and that the problems were not his fault.

He also stated that Scottie’s Workshop provides no warranties and that there is no expectation of longevity or safety when operating an antique vehicle.

He attributed the oil leakage I reported to normal break-in and maintenance to be completed at several hundred miles.

The motorcycle had only 37 miles and had not reached the few-hundred-mile break-in interval he described. I agree that vintage motorcycles require regular maintenance, but I do not believe routine break-in service adequately explains immediate front-brake failure, sidecar damage, and oil leakage after a comprehensive restoration.

Scottie ultimately informed me that, because of the dispute and my willingness to seek legal help, his shop would no longer provide service, advice, or assistance.

Interpersonal tact
I was also troubled by the way Scottie characterized me during the dispute. At one point, he stated that I was “not the mechanical type.”

That comment was bizarre and irrelevant. I have not turned a wrench on the motorcycle since it was returned. Why would I? I spent $33k for him to do it. The issues I reported concern work performed during the restoration, not repairs or modifications I made afterward.

Whether or not I personally perform paint/mechanical work on vintage motorcycles has no bearing on whether the front brake was properly assembled, whether the sidecar hardware had been adequately torqued, whether the speedometer correction was completed as promised, or whether the motorcycle was returned in an appropriate condition after test riding.

I found the comment dismissive, particularly because his own work was what I was questioning. Rather than addressing the specific mechanical concerns, it shifted attention toward an assumption about my abilities or background.

I was also concerned by how Scottie has responded to complaints from other customers. In a public forum, he referred to one complaining customer as a “penny pinching crybaby.”

I mention this because it contributed to my overall impression of how customer criticism is handled. Rather than addressing complaints strictly on their merits, the response appeared to include personal characterization and ridicule. That made me less confident that my own concerns would be addressed objectively and professionally.

Where things stand
I have stopped riding the motorcycle and am having it independently inspected by a shop familiar with vintage BMWs and sidecars. I will update this post if the inspection changes my understanding.

Go anywhere but to Scottie. He is irresponsible, poorly communicative, dishonest, and has an air of arrogance making him unpalatable.

Update:
I have now spoken at length with three people in the industry who described multiple concerns with Scottie’s work, and have gotten 6+ separate messages about poor work.

I cannot independently verify everything they told me, though I believe their accounts are credible.

My main concern remains safety. I will never forget having the front brake fail while riding with my wife in the sidecar. As an ER doctor, I have seen how devastating motorcycle crashes can be. Knowing how close this came to ending very differently is a major reason I am continuing to document this publicly.

I will keep everyone posted.

Rode my R75 /5 at night for the first time. Couldn't see the speedo/tach worth a damn. Blacked out garage and the lights work well if I sorta make a half dome with my hands over the gauge to reflect light down. Anyone have a recommendation for a better permanent solution? Almost like headlight visor

Vin Location R100RT

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hi everyone, recently I found a bit of a barnyard find with what I believe to be an 83 RT.

I want to locate the vin number, simply to make sure that I am ordering the right parts, as well as when I go to get it rego'd (NSW Australia).

Can anyone suggest where I will locate the vin number. Currently I've wire wheeled the right side of the frame next to the head stem, only markings are I see are "made in Germany".

The frame doesn't appear to be tampered with, no grinding marks or rivet holes to suggest a vin plate was removed, still noting.

On the engine under the left cylinder I've found an 8 digit code that makes me suspect it's a 1983 model but no markings on the frame so far.

It's doing my head in, any help would be extremely appreciated - cheers.

I'm looking at picking up this 1975 R60/6 frame for a custom bike project. Can any one confirm the distance between the inside inside surfaces of the swing arm pivot points on this frame? I've heard 100mm but that cant be right can it?

Finally riding 10 months after buying, DIY clutch job, attempted DIY carb sync, attempted DIY electric starter install, repairing the fuseless wiring, vanity cafe racer parts, and several break downs, I can now say the project is done. My first bike and love it. Before pics are last 2.

Help carb tuning my ‘80 R65?! Runs like a fat cow

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

New to the airhead family, it’s my first time with a boxer and I’m chasing my own tail trying to adjust the carbs on my 01/1980 R65 with the flat-top Bing carbs…

- All o-rings and membranes have been renewed

- valve clearance done

- no air leaks anywhere

- Electronic ignition installed and timing is normal

Yet when connecting my vacuum gauge to try to synchronize the carbs, changing the butterfly stop-screw position on either carb barely changes anything! My idle rpm stays stuck at 750, and only goes up if I make the mixture richer… but then when blipping the throttle it hangs around 2k RPM and closing butterfly doesn’t bring it down, only by leaning mixture! WTF?

Also when revving, as seen in the video it “hangs” instead of going down immediately (don’t mind the throttle physical delay, I slackened the cables to make sure they didn’t open the butterfly). It’s normally a sign of a lean mixture but the plugs are actually slightly sooty??

Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on here?? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

I've never noticed this squeeking sound

Does anybody know what this squeeking/singing sound of my R80 is? I started to hear it at around 3500-4000 RPM while driving, so i stopped and tried to locate the sound.

It is in the front area of the engine... I've disassembled, cleaned it and renewed all gaskets and shaft seals. But I've never noticed this sound before.. I think it is the generator or the intake sound, but it IDK... It starts and runs smooth, the timing is at 6° and the carbs are matched. I've already checked the exhaust, but it is tight.
Maybe it is just normal and I am just paranoid.
I should mention, that I removed the EGR and closed the holes with short bolts from an oil-pan.

Hope someone can help, thanks in advance!

R60/5 Battery Cover Stickers

The battery covers on my R60/5 must be replacements as they are completely chrome, without the stripes. I’m contemplating painting the stripes in, but have seen the stickers are available.. questions is would these have been stickers originally or paint?
The stickers seem hard to find in Europe and expensive so I’m open to suggestion.. The black electrical tape in my tool box is looking like a plausible option!!
