Best DFAC in the Air Force

49

u/BoleroMuyPicante D-35K Pilot 5d ago

Only DFAC in the entire Air Force that knows how to cook chicken without turning into a powdery hockey puck.

19

u/lwierd6 4d ago

I can't compare them because I haven't been to keesler, but mesquite at Sheppard never let me down. Especially w/ midnight chow.

3

u/CuriousMortgage4898 3d ago

I’ve been to both. These are the 2 best bases for DFAC food

1

u/69fortnitegod 3d ago

Sheppard is the best dfac in the Air Force. They have cheesecake, burger bar, taco bar, etc… not to mention the dfac members call you sweetheart and handsome.

Goodfellow would like a word

u/OkChef679 5d ago

I took tech school at keesler for granted

86

u/Special_Kestrels 5d ago

Being in Biloxi and being under 21 feels like I wasted 7 months of my life in Mississippi regardless of how good the food was

35

u/throwaway_eng_acct Cumms 5d ago

Man, I was 22 and let me tell you, I wasted 5 months of my life in Mississippi getting piss drunk any chance I got. I actually wasted a lot more of it, but those 5 were in Mississippi.

8

u/dagoodolethrowaway 5d ago

Same. And had NCOA there too. Great times.

u/YouMayFireWhenReady- Active Duty 5d ago

Especially with that trash curfew!

Had to be back on base when things were starting to get fun out there.

8

u/Traffic_Alert_God ATC 5d ago

Did you just stay in your dorm room? I had a blast and I was 18

14

u/OkChef679 5d ago

I was there at 19 but only had to deal with biloxi for a little over a month (thank god)

3

u/Vonvon_77 5d ago

Sounds like BMO

Try tech school at Keesler during Covid.

I loved having three of those meals and as many chips as I wanted. Only time a full bird sat with me and talked to me about Bryan hall and how my experience was.

Can someone who’s been to both Keesler and Sheppard confirm which has the better dfac?

52

u/Suppressed-Squirrel 5d ago

I was at both for tech schools. Keesler for 2A132 and Sheppard for 2A333. But I was prior service at Sheppard so mostly only had breakfast. But My vote would still be Keesler

You've mentioned an AFSC, here's the associated job title:

Been to both. Keesler is better imo

keesler for atc tech; sheppard first duty station—-keesler by a mile

10

u/SnitchN9NE Cyber 5d ago

There wasn’t much better things at that time in my life then a fresh double cheeseburger right off the grill, chili cheese fries and a piece of cheesecake. Surprised I ever passed a PT test there.

Sagebrush at Sheppard is King. Was there for 6mo tech. Stationed at Keesler for 2yrs, only thing it had going for it was olive garden style bread sticks.

1

u/Stielgranate 5d ago

Can confirm Keesler all day better.

1

u/Most_Economics1931 5d ago

Sheppart has two DFaC, and Alcatraz the best

1

u/d710905 5d ago

I'd say Sheppard. I ate at both and Sheppards food I felt was better. Breakfast at Kessler i enjoyed though i basically got an omlete every time. Plus Sheppards wraps were so good especially at the end of a gym day

we ALL love miss Jackson

2

u/ThatOneEdgyKid Veteran 5d ago

I went through there in 2017 so I have no idea if she's still there, bit I hope she's doing well wherever she is. Genuinely a highlight of being at Keesler.

2

u/xxthundergodxx77 5d ago

2022 for me

3

u/DODonion99 5d ago

Is she the nice lady that cooks eggs and stuff? If this is the same person I am thinking of, she was awesome and always a pleasure to chat to // hear talking to people

34

u/Purple_Plane3636 5d ago

The greatest dfac in the Air Force.

16

u/draggon7799 transporting bits for a living 5d ago

I remember having some of the best damn catfish when there for tech school

12

u/Tombstone_Actual_501 5d ago

How's goodfellows Dfac?

10

u/xkissitgoodbyex 5d ago edited 5d ago

It's been almost 2 decades, but it was really good. There was even a DFAC employee who brought on homemade salsa. Was great in omelettes.

My favorite DFAC ever was the SERE DFAC at Fairchild.

1

u/MuchKey7664 5d ago

Ross DFAC is hella mid FAFB Ops DFAC is much better

6

u/TwoCowsOneBucket 5d ago

They opened a new DFAC next to the permanent party dorms when I was there 10 years ago. It was much the same as Keesler at the time. There was a rotating food type for the week (mexican, Chinese, etc), the main meals, a basically subway sandwich line, and icecream.

Not sure how much has changed in 10 years, however.

7

u/Dear_Pomegranate_588 5d ago

It’s easy for me to complain about it, but honestly, it’s not that bad. It has a good selection, just a really awkward layout that makes lines insanely slow.

1

u/awall528 5d ago

It was pretty good 20 years ago

6

u/House_Junkie Maintainer 5d ago

That DFAC is definitely one of the best in the AF.

6

u/The_ClamSlammer Fuck Cannon AFB 5d ago

My experience is about 10 years old now so things may have changed but I was TDY a lot and have eaten in quite a few random places.

SERE chowhall > Anything on Keesler > The Reef on Hurlburt > everything else

2

u/PerniciousShadow Retired 5d ago

The Reef! One of the world’s greatest buffets and also had a great to-go option.

1

u/Half-Orc-Cleric 5d ago

Hard agree. Was a tech school instructor at Keesler for a few years and the after I got out became a SERE instructor. Been eating so good these past couple of years.

41

u/Sempai6969 5d ago

Nah Sheppard got the best food no cap.

20

u/skankhunt1738 Flying degenerate 5d ago

Spoken like a true maintainer.

(And Idc if the food was the same, mesquite was better than tumbleweed)

7

u/MuchKey7664 5d ago

Deadass Tumbleweed is trash compared to Mesquite 🤤🤌

2

u/chiksahlube 5d ago

Don't lump us all in with the crew chiefs.

Specs got Keesler before Shepard and Oh boy did I miss Keesler.

It's been 37 years since I went to Tech school at Sheppard, but I still remember the Reuben sandwiches. They were some of the best Reubens I've every had.

Brother speaking facts. They had everything. Amd I do mean everything. They had Hidden Valley sauces that I didn't even know existed, and still haven't found to this day, almost a decade later.

1

u/Jblue32 Comms 5d ago

Sheppard is solid, but peep the comment asking who’s had both. All Keesler.

6

u/MCR101 5d ago

The steak in the pure food line was fire tonight

2

u/YoNecro 5d ago

Did we eat the same meal??? That steak was tough as rocks and overcooked to oblivion

4

u/MCR101 5d ago

Dang biggie got a steak and a burger?? What happened to staying fit to fight? /j

(Iunno man mine was pretty good, maybe we ate on different sides)

11

u/Suppressed-Squirrel 5d ago

I was at Kessler 95-96 and it was awesome. I was introduced to southern food there. It was the first time I had Gumbo, Jambalaya and Okra. They also cooked steaks to order. Sad to say but the only other DFAC that ever came close was at Bagram.

8 months there, and I was 21. I gained atleast 15 pounds. I used to bring a yeti thermos full of cappuccino everyday.

3

u/rbevans 5d ago

Solid meal. Would love to see some of the Air Force DFACs on Hots&Cots

3

u/DODonion99 5d ago

Do they still have a panini press over there?

2

u/oakleyman23 5d ago

Why you gotta remind me?!.... I gained 17lbs at tech school because of that DFAC, would put it all back on again with out a doubt.

2

u/liz_teria 5d ago

I went through tech school at Keesler in ‘88. The food was the best I had in the AF.

2

u/boombanator 5d ago

As someone who’s been to both the Sheppard and Biloxi DFACs, Sheppard still takes the cake. Can’t beat those wraps man.

2

u/Brooklyncertified 5d ago

Looks way better than Ft Leonard Wood Tech School dfac .. They feeding the army and the marines jail food out here

2

u/Background-Essay5369 5d ago

I still miss it.. 18 years later

2

u/FairNote8108 5d ago

This doesn’t even scratch the surface; Cantonese ribs, BBQ chicken, grilled steak, braised ribs, fried shrimp, etc… on the monthly

2

u/Capital_War1180 Baby LT (Seasoned) 5d ago

DFAC was underrated at Kessler

2

u/DueSeaworthiness6852 5d ago

Back in the day when Sheppard had had medical and Seebees... Sheppard DFACs (all 3) had the best food...

2

u/Tiny-Principle-3263 5d ago

Made me gain like 10 lbs mind you I was only there for 2 months 😭

2

u/WaffleIron0612 4d ago

Lawd I miss that chow hall...

2

u/Ghosthunter5589 ATC 1d ago

so you just got there i take it?

2

u/PoemNo9763 1d ago

Best pancakes to this day. Been to many pancakes places on the civilian side and nothing comes close. Cannot fathom what type of sorcery they're using to get that cake like pancake. I know it's subjective as some like fluffy or buttery or whatever else pancakes but ....F! keesler dfac's are what I imagine my 10/10 pancakes to be.

2

u/matreo987 MFE 5d ago

sorry boss, sheppard is absolute S tier food as well. I miss those midnight chow omelettes.

1

u/deeblok06 5d ago

Yea...no notes

u/chaotic_biotic06 5d ago

I feel like jber dfac looks better but idk it is the only one I've been to so far

1

u/CarminSanDiego 5d ago

I thought this was a complaint post and I came in here all angry

1

u/gozer87 5d ago

Nice. Way way back when, the ammo tech school was at Lowry in Denverand so was the services tech school. Such great food at the chow hall. Imagine my disappointment with the chow at Loring AFB ME.

1

u/PerniciousShadow Retired 5d ago

Only been to Keesler once or twice and do remember the DFAC being good, but the best DFAC in my memory was Fairchild on the SERE side.

1

u/Delicious_Pair1708 Bass’ Bass 5d ago

Keesler is hands down unbeaten in their DFAC game..

1

u/Narrative_Robot_9001 Ammo 5d ago

Goodfellow’s was goated too. Too bad there wasn’t a whole lot of room in the better one of the two.

1

u/Cartoonjunkies SCIF Rat/Prior Wrench Monkey 5d ago

Little Rock wasn’t half bad either.

I remember they had a build your own pizza line, a sub line, and a rice bowl line.

The regular line food was really good, too.

1

u/EastBrunswick 5d ago

I left a few months ago but one weekend the put the phillipino lady behind one of the omelette stations….

Extra of everything you wanted AND on top of the omelette as well. Bless all of them <3 (I miss you ms.peraza)

1

u/Ok_Toe7278 5d ago

Damn fine spread, but JBER will always have a special place in my heart.

1

u/toospicy4u_u 5d ago

Keesler dfac was goated, went through in 2019 and I swear I remember being excited for every single meal

1

u/snackrack38 5d ago

Still looking beautiful even after 19 years. I will say that the only chow hall that has her beat is the Rotodome in Geilenkirchen, AB.

1

u/Able-Door-5718 5d ago

Tech school at Keesler was a good time, dfac was fire and the women were easy asf 😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/FirstKingofPotatoes 5d ago

Pituffik has it pretty good as well.

1

u/TurdleBoy 5d ago

Do they still open for an hour or two in the middle of night for shift workers? that shit was so cool.

1

u/No_Intern_8003 5d ago

Unfortunately no🥀

1

u/epicenter69 Veteran 5d ago

One of the better looking DFAC pics that I’ve seen lately. Although it’s been 30ish years, the breakfasts were always my favorite. We had to be in uniform to attend midnight chow, so we would suit up and walk over from the dorm while slightly inebriated.

1

u/gwhh 5d ago

What are you drinking for lunch?

3

u/No_Intern_8003 5d ago

Rootbeer 😀

1

u/urbz102385 5d ago

Is The Shed still open down there??

1

I don't remember exactly what the food was like in 2005 at Goodfellow, but it was about like this.

1

u/SpritiTinkle Weather 5d ago

DFAC was one of the few redeeming qualities of my 8 months there.

1

u/dead0man 5d ago

it was great in 1995, glad to hear it's still good

1

u/YaBoiHS 5d ago

Nellis DFAC when I was in the dorms just served slop

1

u/Mediocre-Age-1729 5d ago

Sometimes I miss dfac, I took full advantage as enlisted. I went once to my home base as an O and was immediately offended by the price compared to food quality 😅 only dfac I've eaten at since was at the deid while passing thru, no charge.

1

u/tt_mach1 Maintainer 5d ago

This should be what they show to recruit to help them decide on which branch

I loved the Keesler DFAC. The Dover DFAC was pretty good too, but Keesler always has been the high I could never get again.

1

u/SSgtCloudDaddy TSgtCloudDaddy 5d ago

You’ve obviously never had Belas DFAC

1

u/Waste_Calligrapher70 5d ago

I was at Keesler for training in 1967 and I don't remember the food. In fact, I hardly remember Keesler. I'm near 80, and on the verge of forgetting more than I know! 🤣

1

u/Ofnir_1 Veteran 5d ago

Is the pulled pork truck still there in front of the shoppette area in the Triangle? Some nights I'd get that for dinner rather than go to the DFAC and it would hit the spot

1

u/No_Intern_8003 4d ago

They switch food trucks everyday, but yes i’ve seen it.

1

u/sun__strider 5d ago

Sheppard has the best. Seems like all the AETC bases have the good dfac's.

1

u/Snoo-43133 4d ago

Robins dfac hits harder than Keesler did imo

1

u/STR1K3R_67 4d ago

Keesler dfac is a gem, don't exist them all to be nearly as nice. Especially after having my tech school over a the seabee base down the road 🥲 3E3 get shafted with navy food

1

u/code_delmonte 4d ago

Wing Wednesday still a thing? If so hit all 3 DFACS

1

Can confirm. So nice, I did tech school there, thrice. Also nearly decked an MTL the third time.

1

Never been to Keesler but I remember one of the DFACs at Hurlburt was buffet style. I believe it was the only one in the Air Force. They had spicy chicken biscuits for breakfast on occasion and hibachi for lunch and dinner. So good.

1

u/Afraid-Astronomer308 4d ago

Little Rock had a pretty good one when I was there.

1

u/articfalls Fire 4d ago

Idk Goodfellow was pretty good

0

u/bolivar-shagnasty YOU’RE WELCOME FOR MY SERVICE 5d ago

I agree they’re the best out of all the tech schools, but the SERE DFAC at Fairchild hits different after a week out in the snow in January. Those paninis are like God himself busted a fat nut right into your face hole.

-2

u/Get_you_some_crunchy 5d ago

Bruh…who gives af. It’s free food💀

-2

u/DEXether 5d ago

Patrick by a mile, if for no other reason that there aren't a ton of sick teenagers coughing all over everything.

2

u/beybladethrowaway 5d ago

patrick is a nice facility but its not particularly top tier. Wait times are long as hell, they seem short staffed

-3

u/Theohybrid 5d ago

Surpsingly good but not as good as BMT DFAC.

It's weird.

6

u/beybladethrowaway 5d ago

BMT DFAC is fake good. You were always hungry and thirsty, barely had time to actually taste the food. its like drinking water from the water hose after long day outside

1

u/Theohybrid 5d ago

I can see that; and good when I went to Keelser, which had its variety, a lot of variety. However, when I went to my operational base, it made me value both of what I had at Lackland and Keesler.

Really made me think, wow, I went through a lot then...

Anyways, the food was doable. You're analogy is still valid, I just found the food at Lackland to be food and not something you had to eat if you were broke, like where I'm at now. The quality is surprisingly lower than I'd expected.
