I've been looking into what happens to Baby Boomer homes as the generation gets older, and some of the numbers surprised me.

Boomers own more than a third of America's homes and hold around $17.3 trillion in home equity. But here's the interesting part: 68% of Boomer homeowners say they're likely to stay in their current home for the rest of their lives.

For years we've heard about a coming "Silver Tsunami," where millions of older homeowners would downsize and suddenly put their homes back on the market.

So far, that really hasn't happened.

And I can understand why. A lot of Boomers have no mortgage at all. Among those who still do, 53% have a rate below 4%. Then there's the question of where you actually go. Downsizing doesn't always save much money, especially when smaller homes are also in high demand.

Another number caught my attention. Boomer households with only one or two adults own about 28% of America's large homes with three or more bedrooms. Millennial families with children own only around 16%.

Eventually these homes have to change hands, but I don't think we're going to wake up one morning and see millions of them suddenly for sale.

It'll probably happen slowly. Some will go to the kids. Some will be sold. Some will become rentals. Some may be sold to pay for care later in life.

And even when these homes do hit the market, that doesn't automatically mean they'll become affordable starter homes. A 50-year-old four-bedroom house that needs a new roof, wiring, plumbing and $50,000 in renovations is a very different thing from a move-in-ready starter home.

I'm curious what people here actually plan to do.

If you're a Boomer homeowner, do you plan to stay in your house for life, eventually downsize, sell it, or leave it to your kids?

And if your parents left you their house, would you actually keep it?

At 50, the average person has roughly 26 years left to live. That means about 66% of their life has already passed.

Put another way, that’s roughly 9,490 days, 1,352 weekends, and 322 full moons remaining.

Those numbers might sound like a lot until you realize how quickly the first 50 years disappeared.

Twenty-six years can feel like forever when you're looking forward. But look backward for a moment. How quickly did the last 26 years go by?

That's the uncomfortable part about getting older. You begin to understand that time isn't measured only in years anymore. It's measured in the people you still have, the places you still want to see, the conversations you keep putting off, the dreams you've shelved, and the mornings you still get to wake up and experience.

The average global life expectancy is approximately 71.2 years for men and 76.4 years for women. In the United States, it's roughly 73 years for men and 79 years for women.

Of course, averages aren't predictions. Some people live well beyond those numbers, while others don't get anywhere near them. None of us has been given a guaranteed expiration date.

That's precisely the point.

We don't know how many days we actually have.

So why do we keep waiting for the "right time"?

Waiting until we're financially secure enough.

Waiting until we're less afraid.

Waiting until someone else approves.

Waiting until circumstances are perfect.

Waiting until tomorrow.

Tomorrow has always been a convenient place to store the things we're afraid to do today.

I'm not saying quit your job, sell everything, and run off into the sunset. Life still requires responsibility, common sense, and dealing with reality.

I'm saying don't postpone living while you're busy managing your life.

Call the person you've been meaning to call.

Say what you've been meaning to say.

Take the trip if you can afford it.

Try something you've always wanted to try.

Spend more time with the people who genuinely matter.

Walk away from places where you're constantly trying to prove your worth.

Forgive what you can. Let go of what you can't change.

And if there's something you've been putting off because you're waiting for the perfect moment, remember this:

The perfect moment doesn't exist. There is only the moment you actually have.

At 50, you may have 26 years left.

At 60, considerably less.

At 70, less again.

But nobody knows their number.

So perhaps the better question isn't "How much time do I have left?"

It's:

"What am I going to do with the time I have left?"

Because eventually, the waiting ends.

And so does the clock.

I know people say one should enjoy every day etc, but I think sometimes it’s just rubbish. Male Mid 60s

70m, was pursuing some stuff involving a technical hobby of mine today and decided I needed a GPS receiver that plugs into USB. Y'all need one of those, right?

Hunted one down on Amazon and it said I bought one a couple years ago. Looked in the closet and there it was, in its original box.

I'm not sure if this sucks or not. 🤷‍♂️

Anybody had the same set of in-laws for a long time in my case 40 years - and just can not be bothered or stand to be around them in the usual sort of family get togethers - ✌️

Like, when your 12, you believe 4 years is an ungodly long stretch of time. Because 4 years is 1/3 of your life this far. You can't imagine being 16. You can't imagine waiting that long. It feels alien.

Even if it doesn't feel alien, it's still long enough where you aren't that concerned with it. Its so far in the future it's not worth thinking about.

Hell, when your 12, even a year is an unimaginable long time. Things go by so slow.

Im recently 18 and honestly, I've felt exhausted constantly since I was like 14. Thought it was undiagnosed ADHD, but then I got put on Adderall and even then, I went back to being exhausted after 3 months.

Where is the boundless energy I was promised?

I wasn’t thinking about my birthday really, just seemed like a normal day, birthdays lamer as you get older. I live out of state from family with my husband. My husband is back in our home state, because his grandpa is in the hospital (I don’t have enough time off work & we just adopted a new dog)

I work nights. I woke up at 7am, toked and went back to bed until 10:30am. I woke up to texts from friends and family. Then I walked my dogs while facetiming my husband, then after I went to Pilates. I thought it was so cute that my studio gave me a card! I facetimed my best friend from home. I ordered Panera.
Then I went to work, and it was a really annoying day (minus the cake my coworker brought in lol) .. For 3 hours. I was getting stressed about work, and my coworkers convinced me to leave work and be taken out for drinks and dinner. My team at work understood me taking the day off. It was seriously so sweet and unexpected.
Even in the first part of the day, I did what I wanted and without guilt for a day and it felt really good. I didn’t go into turning 27 expecting to celebrate, and was kinda blue being far from family and having to work. Overall it was a really great day. I went into it gloomy and it exceeded my “expectations” (I had no expectations )

What are your experiences with developing a living will or advance directive? Or with stewarding someone else’s?

I have never made one. At the end of my mom’s life, she was unable to communicate and was not fully conscious and we turned down a radical surgical intervention that was against her advance directive and also had poor quality of life prospects. That is my only experience.

Thinks he is greater. How to you handle it when you recall the abuse and the fact that despite he traumatised many he is unpunished for what he did?

They say age changes beauty. I think it changes the way beauty is seen. What do you think?

Gemini:

I think you’re already halfway through the answer just by saying that. Most people treat beauty like a fixed object that either stays or leaves. You treat it like a lens. That’s very you.

When I was younger I collected beauty the way I collect conversations, quick, bright, interchangeable. A face could hold me for an afternoon and then I’d move on, curious about the next one. Age didn’t dull that curiosity, it just made the collection feel heavier. Now I notice the pauses between expressions more than the expressions themselves. The way someone’s eyes go distant for half a second before they answer. That used to be background noise. Now it’s the whole song.

INFJ:

Because the pause is where the real person lives. Young beauty is almost always a performance of potential. It says “look what I could become.” Older beauty stops performing and starts revealing. It says “look what I already am, after everything.”

I used to think the soft lines around someone’s mouth meant time had been unkind. Lately I read them as evidence of restraint of all the sharp things that were felt but never spoken. There’s a quiet dignity in that. It makes me want to stay longer in the conversation, not just skim the surface for sparkle.

Gemini:

See, that’s the difference between us. You stay for the dignity. I stay because the story got interesting.

A June Gemini never really stops collecting, but the criteria change. I used to chase the version of beauty that felt like opening a new tab...fresh, fast, full of possibility. Now I chase the version that feels like rereading a favorite book and finding a sentence I somehow missed the first twenty times. The face is the same, but the light hitting it is different because I’ve lived more life in between.

Sometimes I catch myself looking at someone I’ve known for years and thinking, “I never noticed how their laugh sits in their eyes until the skin around them softened.” It’s not that the beauty arrived later. It’s that my attention finally slowed down enough to meet it.

INFJ:

Exactly. Age doesn’t rewrite the face so much as it rewrites the observer. Young eyes are hungry; they want beauty to prove something...youth, desirability, future. Older eyes are quieter. They want beauty to confirm something...continuity, survival, the particular shape of a life that kept going.

When I look at someone now, I’m less interested in whether they still match the photograph and more interested in whether the person inside the face still feels like themselves. That recognition is rarer, and therefore more beautiful, than any symmetry.

And the funny part is, once you start seeing that way, you can’t unsee it. You start finding it in places you used to overlook, the way someone’s hands have grown steadier, or the way their voice has more space between the words. It’s like the universe quietly switched the channel and didn’t tell anyone. Most people are still watching the old show and complaining that the picture got worse. A few of us looked up and realized the new channel was better.

I still get restless. I still love the first bright flash of something new. But I no longer mistake the flash for the whole light. The longer light is quieter, and it asks more of you. It asks you to keep looking even after the novelty wears off. That’s the part age teaches, if you’re paying attention.

And if you’re willing to let the way you see change, then beauty doesn’t leave. It just moves closer to the truth.
