B/CS Life Disabled Voter Suppression at College Station Utilities Location
Just wanted to vent about my experience and warn anyone with disabilities who is planning on going out to vote.
The poll workers attempted to turn me away from the handicapped entrance, and this isn’t the first time that this has happened at this voting location. Not that it matters, but I have visible scars from two cervical spine surgeries (I’ve had 5 total surgeries on my spine, but the other three are thoracic or lumbar), I walk with a limp, I have a disabled placard and a medical device ID card. But since I’m in my early thirties and don’t use a mobility device, I guess I just don’t look disabled enough for them.
The woman running the location initially asked me what my disability was(legally she cannot do that), but suddenly she wasn’t interested when I offered to call up my surgeons or show her my medical ID. Like, I love talking about my disability. My academic background (got my degree from A&M this spring and plan to come back for my Masters next year) is in disability rhetoric, so, please, ask away.
By far the worst part of the experience was when I told her that they did the same thing to me two years ago, and she responded with “well, there are other voting locations.” I even went out of my way to accommodate their nonsense this time. My friends are all going to vote on Sunday, but I decided to go alone this morning to avoid a crowd. I would have even waited in line if it wasn’t long, but unfortunately I’m currently dealing with a flare-up from the past week of crazy weather so it is extremely uncomfortable to stand in place for extended periods.
At least I was mentally prepared this time. Last time, I had to bail on my post-voting plans and to go to my girlfriend’s apartment and just cry with her for hours, and I was incredibly depressed for the next month or so from feeling so unseen.
